In his review of Sequestered Sympathy, the excellent new album from Exulansis, Eden wrote a line that truly hits the nail on the head: “Arresting is a word which should be used for music more often.” That feeling of being totally overwhelmed by the beauty of music is something worth celebrating, as the sheer amount of music consumption we consume here at Heavy Blog makes theses experiences relatively rare.

Classifying cellist Raphael Weinroth-Browne‘s music as “arresting” is certainly warranted, and similar to Exulansis, he achieves this through with the lens of metal and the technical capacities of classical music. Metal fans might be most familiar with his work with Musk Ox, whose fantastic album Woodfall (2014) earned some well-deserved praise for its gorgeous take on neo-folk. Now, Weinroth-Browne is venturing out on his own with Worlds Within, which has become one of my most anticipated releases of 2020. We’re thrilled to share a taste of the album with a video for “From Within,” which you can check out below.

Both the music and video are truly arresting in their beauty. Weinroth-Browne exhibits incredible technical ability coupled with an ear for creative, nimble compositions. His playing marries the ability of a classically trained cellist with the scope and modern appeal of artists like Sarah Neufeld or Ulver. Meanwhile, the visuals are impeccably shot and sequenced, revealing a warm, stunning autumnal scene. The combination of music and landscape is a perfect pairing, and anyone with even a vague interest in modern classical will find themselves anxious for the full album to arrive next year.

Worlds Within is available Jan. 24, 2020, and can be pre-ordered via Bandcamp.
