I don’t know if I’ve ever come across a band whose name is so appropriate. Like ice scraping powerfully against the earth’s crust, Glacier drag you along at a methodical and purposeful pace, slowly crushing you into a pulp while laying waste to what once stood before you. They shape their own ground like glaciers once shaped our landscapes, in the way that thunderous post-metal can only do. There’s a power here that puts even the air around you in tension.

We’re happy to be premiering their new album No Light Ever, which paints a bleak monochromatic world for the listener that over 4 tracks spanning 40+ minutes is hard to escape. This is a band that knows how to use calm and silence to set a false sense of safety, before building up that tension until it’s violently released. Even their euphoric crescendos are somehow viscerally punishing.

Glacier nail that facet of post- music that I love where instrumental bands can tell a story without uttering a word – though their [extremely post-rock] song titles such as “O World! I Remain No Longer Here.” certainly help set the scene.

Some of the more subdued moments on this release such as the first half of “The Bugles Blow, Fanned By Hysteria” take on a bit of a doom/stoner feel, not too unlike the excellent release from Spotlights earlier this year, with almost a jazzy atmospheric flair of a MONO. Speaking of which I really appreciate how they use percussion, mainly cymbals, to drive the atmosphere. It gives it this disorienting out of body type dissonance.  The album closer hits with a dizzying Swans-ian swarm of sound and passion that builds into some Pelican like grooves, and the live appeal of this band by now is certainly palpable. Glacier provide a soundtrack for your personal journey into a dense void. This is No Light Ever.
