Though opinions have oscillated on the more recent parts of Opeth‘s discography, resulting in what some might call a lukewarm reception to their most recent endeavor in Sorceress [review], their influence in both the progressive and melodic death metal scenes is impossible to deny. Approaching their 30th year as an act, the band has seen countless tours for twelve albums, mostly recently traveling the world for the aforementioned Sorceress.

Mikael Åkerfeldt‘s love of “dadprog,” a whimsical term for progressive music of yore that influenced many artists today, has shined brightly in recent years, starting with the first collaboration with Porcupine Tree‘s Steven Wilson, the greatest shift shining most prominently in Heritage, and fully coalescing in Sorceress. Whatever your feelings on the music itself, Opeth has always been and, for the foreseeable future, will be a force on stage. Åkerfeldt’s stage presence is dedicated to the music, forgoing sweeping body movements of an active stage presence for accurate musical reproduction in a live setting, as well as peppering Opeth sets with his own brand of stand-up comedy. “We recorded this record at Gothenburg, the Anus of Sweden,” he said introducing “Demon of the Fall” from My Arms, Your Hearse, even name-dropping In FlamesAnders Fridén who had helped on the album’s production.

Here are photos of Opeth from their performance at Chicago’s Riviera Theater on October 9th!
