As an avid fan of post-rock, post-metal, and instrumental music as a whole, I can freely admit that seeing this kind of music live can be a mixed bag at best. Particularly for post-rock bands, the same elements of beauty, serenity, and complex composition that can make the listening experience blissful can also make experiencing it live a bit of a drag, particularly when it’s too layered and complex for the band to adequately recapture in live format. Thankfully the bands who performed at Saint Vitus in Brooklyn this past Friday did not suffer from this issue. Texas natives This Will Destroy You, on the heels of release of their beautiful Another Language (read our review here), played two nights at the Vitus. The second evening featured a formidable supporting lineup of Planning For Burial (not shown here) and Sannhet (whose triumphant sophomore album Revisionist you can read our review of shortly).

You can now see the full sets from Sannhet and This Will Destroy You, filmed in our usual pro-shot, multicam style, after the jump!

This Will Destroy You:

I’m not gonna lie. This Sannhet set is hands-down my favorite thing I’ve shot for this site thus far. The visuals from their projections just look stunning, and their set was about as tight and ferocious as they come. If you are new to the band, this should be a great primer. This Will Destroy You were hardly anything resembling slouches with their set though. At 83 minutes, the band played a mesmerizing set literally spanning their entire catalog. The show actually felt less like a promotion for Another Language than a retrospective of the band’s decade-long career. Performing only three cuts from the new album (‘War Prayer’, ‘Dustism’, and ‘New Topia’), the vast majority of the set was spent digging through classics like ‘A Three-Legged Workhorse’, ‘Black Dunes’, and ‘There Are Some Remedies Worse Than The Disease’. There were even some really deep and unexpected cuts like the heavily IDM-influenced ‘Grandfather Clock’ thrown in for good measure. All-in-all pretty much everything a TWDY fan could ask for.

I would be remiss if I didn’t give a very special shout-out to Jonas Blank over at NYC Taper for recording the pristine audio you hear and being kind enough to share it with us. If you do not already follow NYC Taper it is an absolute must because they are providing an invaluable free service for everyone. Show them some love from us by following them on Facebook.

On a personal note, Friday’s show marked nearly one year to the day that I filmed my first concert for Heavy Blog. And while I’m still proud of the work I did then, I’ve been slowly and steadily trying to improve my output each and every time I’ve gone out since. I’ve appreciated all the feedback I’ve received throughout and encourage you all to continue letting me know how I’m doing. And as always, follow our Youtube page to get updates on videos as soon as they go live! Promise it’ll be getting a makeover soon so it looks a little more visually appealing.
