We’ve talked about ██████ (also, known as nic) before a couple of times now, so by now you should probably know they’re more than just an interesting name. They weave huge and mezmerising post-black metal soundscapes out of blastbeats and tremolo picking in a way that completely belies just how fresh the band are and the new split release with Old Soul is no exception.
Comprising of two tracks and continuing the theme of simply labelling them with Roman numerals, these tracks see the group making a concerted effort to extend their usually more concise sound into a more expansive and wide open post-metal sound and once you reach those final climactic moments of ‘V‘, you’ll know why. It sounds gargantuan.

Though not a band I’m familiar with, it’s pretty obviously in bad taste to not check out the other bands involved in a split. And I’m glad I did.
Old Soul are the perfect companion to the new and more introspective approach of ██████ — it’s loud, abrasive and downright ugly, taking a less subtle but equally as valuable approach to the sound. Seriously, check these bands out and find yourself two new favourites.
