Many were divided by the last Mastodon album The Hunter. It was a rockin’ album full of some killer hooks and proggy jams, but it was certainly another step away from the sound that put them on the map with Leviathan. Whether you liked The Hunter or not, you’re probably still excited at the prospect of a new Mastodon album because, well, it’s a new Mastodon album. Things have been relatively quiet lately, but now there’s finally some signs of life as the group have announced that Nick Raskulinecz will produce the record.
If you don’t recognize the name, Raskulinecz is quite the established producer, credited as having a hand in the creation of many stellar albums, including but not limited to:
- Ghost – Infestissumam
- Deftones – Diamond Eyes
- Alice In Chains – Black Gives Way To Blue
- Trivium – Shogun
- Coheed and Cambria – Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow
- Rush – Snakes & Arrows
- Queens of the Stone Age – Songs For The Deaf
So we can say for certain that the new Mastodon album will sound amazing, regardless of its content. Personally, I’ve never been disappointed by Mastodon, and I don’t expect to be any time soon. Speaking on the record, drummer Bran Dailor told Rolling Stone:
“It’s gonna be massive and insane, lots of epic greatness. There will be lots of huge riffs and new directions. It’s real weird, real math-y, real straightforward. It’s up, down and all around… It’s a culmination of everything for the band. The snowball keeps rolling and collecting snow.”
Sounds promising to me. More info when we have it, but mark this down as yet another album worth looking forward to in 2014.
