This year, we’ve been busy trying to come up with an idea for Heavy Blog merch. At the end of the day, we wanted to sell high quality shirts with professionally done designs that will fit in comfortably with the other music-related merch in your wardrobe  That’s not too much to ask for, right? We didn’t think so, anyway. Now, our end result is in sight.

I knew right away that I wanted our first shirt to contain our loveable mascot Crunchy in some form. I also strove to spring money for a well-known artist from the metal community who had talent and experience that would speak for itself. It was a no-brainer once I started thinking of artists with enough creativity to take up the task of reimagining Crunchy in their own style, and I felt good leaving the artistic direction up to Wormrot’s Arif Rot, who has done artwork for Pig Destroyer and Napalm Death, to name a few. His cover art for Wormrot’s Noise EP (below) sealed the deal, as it was very similar to what I was going for.

At the end of the day, I just wanted people to look at our shirt and immediately know our mascot, and get a sense of familiarity from the stylistic direction. Arif delivered with incredible results, as you can see at the end of this post.

As far as getting the design printed, I know that I also wanted to work with WeNeedMerch.com, a company founded by Ben Orum of All Shall Perish. We want shirts made comparable to the rest of your metal merch collection, and who knows more about the importance of great merch than folks who have lived off of the profits made from selling it? We’ll be seeking a quote soon and getting the money together, but I hope to have these out by the holiday season.

Now, I’ve never printed or sold shirts before, so I’m going to request a little readership participation. Does $15 + shipping seem fair? If you would for sure buy one, what sizes should we make sure we stock up on? Should we strive for the more expensive yet higher quality American Apparel or should we lower standards just a smidge? Do you like the design? Most importantly, is this even something you would buy and wear at all to begin with?! Let us know anything you have on your mind. This is for you folks as much as it is for us.

Thanks for sticking with us. We hope you like Crunchy’s makeover!
