Finally, it’s coming out! Chicago, Illinois’ post-metaller quintet Pelican, are coming out with a new LP after nearly 4 years titled, Forever Becoming. But not only are they coming out with just an LP but a 7″ as well titled Deny The Absolute. Today they released a new track, ‘Immutable Dusk’ off of the recently announced LP which you can listen to below.

In a very typical Pelican fashion, the song is made up of thick riffs that just add up to create that amazing atmosphere that they’re famous for. This 7 minute masterpiece is a perfect statement that Pelican are back in form. With crushing guitar work that eventually lead to some very beautiful post-rockish moments, it’s all that you would expect from a band that have consistently come out with some stellar albums. Even this seems to be particularly in the vein of, probably their best album, The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw.
According to their Facebook page, apparently, “the group had laid a sizeable chunk of the groundwork for the instrumental metal scene that’s come into its own in the 13 years since they started playing together.” This, obviously, is prior to the departure of guitarist Laurent Schroeder-Lebec who was then replaced by current member Dallas Thomas from The Swan Kings. Here we finally get to see Dallas being able to comfortably fill the shoes of a member that was vital to Pelican’s sound and song-writing, and he does a wonderful job at it.
Speaking of the new LP, the band has said quite a bit about the interesting approach they’ve taken to the concept of the album.
“This reborn Pelican is purer, more focused, and far more assured. Recorded at Electrical Audio in Chicago with engineer Chris Common, and featuring The Swan King guitarist Dallas Thomas (replacing the amicably departed Laurent Schroeder-Lebec) Forever Becoming is an immense, speaker-rattling meditation on the infinite cycle of death and life. It takes a lot of experience and a lot of confidence to attempt a head-on ascent of the biggest, most monolithic theme in art, but Forever Becoming is proof that Pelican has plenty of both, and knows how to wield them.”
Pelican are already out on tour in Europe as we speak and will be performing in the US from October (via Invisible Oranges).
