If you listen to just one new band this year, make it Anciients. Their progressive sludgey concoction of Mastodon and Opeth caught me completely off-guard early this year and earned, at the very least, 500 words of fanboy praise from yours truly. So naturally I’ll jump at the chance to talk about them with the latest news being this live version of ‘Overthrone‘ shot at the release party for their debut Heart Of Oak earlier this month in Vancouver, Canadia.

Shot from multiple cameras by Not Your Scene magazine, it shows off everything I love about the band — the ridiculous musicianship, the brilliant songwriting and the head banging tunes that are spawned from those two components. Huge winding riffs meet crashing drums and vocals that range from enticing croons and harsh rasps — if there’s any justice in the world, this band will be massive.
