Recently, Grammy award winning and de facto independent blog for all things metal, Heavy Blog Is Heavy, flew a writer over by gold-plated jet plane to LA. In between using priceless pieces of art as dinner clothes and macking with all the ladies, Deadite attended the listening for the upcoming Black Sabbath album 13 and gave it his blessings, causing fanatics all over the world to rejoice. But now with the PR machine working on overdrive you don’t just have to take our word for it, as the band have released the leading single from the album for your listening pleasure, ‘God Is Dead?‘
Ignoring Nietzsche eating purple spaghetti, this sounds like classic doom-y Sabbath to me. Iommi knocks it out the park in the riff department, as always, and while it may be a bit of a slow-burner this has easily overwritten my ‘don’t expect too much’ mantra when it comes to bands getting back into the swing of things. It’s dark, slightly bluesy and Ozzy’s vocals sound great (whether that’s studio trickery or not) — if the rest of 13 is even half as good as this, I’ll be more than happy.
