Back in mid-2012, Post-metal titans Pelican lost their guitarist and founding member Laurent Schroeder-Lebec, after he announced that he would be taking an “indefinite hiatus”. Though Laurent said that he would still be a part of Pelican, he would not be contributing to the music, which basically means that other priorities had taken the its place and he’s no longer in the band. To fill in for Laurent’s place, Pelican announced earlier via Facebook, that they found their new guitarist in Dallas Thomas of the band The Swan Kings. You can listen to their Pay To Pray EP at Bandcamp.
It’ll be interesting to see how Dallas will be contributing to Pelican musically. The Swan Kings are a more rock-y band and don’t seem to have any post-rock passages in their music but they do sound a lot like the balls-out metal parts from Pelican’s songs like ‘Lost In The Headlights’. I’m excited to see what kind of step the band will take with Dallas’ inclusion since they had already taken a dramatic turn with their last EP Ataraxia/Taraxis. This will be very interesting, indeed.
Personally, I was devastated to hear the news of Laurent’s departure, since they’re one of the reasons I got into the post-metal genre and are one of my biggest influences. If there’s a band that puts the “metal” in “post-metal”, Pelican is it! I will go so far as to even say that they’ve never made a bad album. I’m glad to hear they’re back at it again, which means, more new Pelican! Obviously, Dallas has some big shoes to fill. The musical relationship between Laurent and Trevor was perfect. You could see them basically playing off of each other. That will surely be missed.
Lets keep our fingers crossed and here’s to a new era of Pelican music!
