Meshuggah have just recently started their North American tour alongside Animals as Leaders and Intronaut, and it seems that being on the road has already taken its toll on frontman Jens Kidman, who has been sidelined due to illness. Via Facebook:
Jens is down with the flu. And this flu means business. He has been forbidden to even speak. He’s mute for now. WE WILL PLAY ANYWAY. So memorize the lyrics and bring your very best growl Atlanta. You will all be Jens tonight!! Lets make this happen! We hope he’s back tomorrow,or it’ll be vocal-duties Charlotte!
Now I enjoy Meshuggah and would definitely like to see a very unique instrumental show, but I’m not so sure a full headlining Meshuggah set without Jens Kidman’s stage presence or vocal work would be ideal. But then again, considering the alternatives, the best possible solution would be to soldier on while Jens recovers. Apparently the Atlanta crowd was very embracing of the, as the group later updated:
Atlanta!! You have our deepest gratitude. You helped us turn a really shitty situation into an unbelievable night for us. YOU are Meshuggah. Much love!!
I’m sure videos from the show will surface soon enough. I think the band are a bit optimistic in Jens recovering enough within two days to go back to performing (it’s going to be hell on him and his throat), but props to them for keeping spirits high and continuing to give the fans a special concert experience.
