McGee, who is responsible for Primal Scream, The Jesus And Mary Chain and Oasis, made the comments in his keynote speech at Australia’s BigSound festival. He is quoted as saying:
“I read that the Sony PIAS Building burnt down. I’m probably the only person who thought that was funny. I call that a result. Got rid of all the shit music. And you get paid for it, the stuff you couldn’t sell.”
He’s touted as a music indutry veteran, but his remarks display either a sore lack of knowledge or a woeful arrogance. He also said “I don’t really like music,” and “With music it’s never enough for anybody…everyone wants to be Jagger or McCartney.” What the hell he’s doing opening a massive musical event like BigSound or running a new label, Poptones? Outside Glasvegas and The Libertines he isn’t fussed on much these days.
Wow. It makes me a little sad; to be that devoid of connection with music and to write off everything else as rubbish must be a sorry state to be in. Has being the head of a massive label crushed everything the worth of everything down into pound signs?
I know it’s pointless to get butthurt over the comments of some past-it mainstream music charlatan, but that fire was devastating. I don’t know all of the labels involved, but there are some fantastic records put out by the ones that I do. Does music sell because it’s good? Does it not sell because it’s bad? Of course it fucking doesn’t, don’t be so stupid. Throw enough money at something, or get lucky on YouTube, and you’ve got another potentially talentless mug making millions.
He no longer runs Creation Records, but in a 2002 interview with him on their website he basically said that they shouldn’t even be going any more. Well that’s nice isn’t it?
Hopefully those affected don’t take this as seriously as I apparently have. I suppose they’ll have all that insurance money to roll around in for comfort…
