I’m going to lay down 10 dollars right now that if you are a resident of the United States of America, you have not heard of Evergrey.

Give me your money.

Evergrey is a power metal / progressive metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. Now, history tells that we love Gothenburg (especially me, due to At The Gates). Their members consist of Tom S. Englund (vocals, guitar), Rikard Zander (backing vocals, keyboards), Marcus Jidell (guitar), Johan Niemann (bass), and Hannes Van Dahl (drums).

Tom S. Englund is Evergrey. He’s been the only constant of the band, singing his balls off and shredding since the bands formation in 1995. And speaking of his voice, he has, in my opinion, one of the best voices, of any genre, period.  He could easily hold his own with the best operatic voices of today.  To prove my point, here is one of Evergrey’s best songs, in my opinion, “Blinded”, off their 2003 release Recreation Day. Notice the pro shredding in the beginning.

The band has released 8 albums, each of which are amazing.  Their albums often talk about concepts including alien abductions, personal reformation, child abuse, religion, and cults, which is what the song that got me into Evergrey is about. The lyrics, “Join the world of greater learning. Crown me king and be my servant,” and “All the dreams I had, all my future wishes, put aside for a greater journey,” show this.   Evergrey has a new album coming out Februrary 28th, 2011, entitled Glorious Collision, to be released by SPV.
