After a bit of uncertainty regarding Z2 having been rumored to be shelved, metal mastermind Devin Townsend tweeted that he has finished writing the first track for the follow up to his 2007 concept record Ziltoid The Omniscient. YEEESSSS!

Obviously it’s way too early to make much of this, but the news is still very exciting. Devin says that Z2 is about a year and a half away, and judging by some interviews Devin has given in the past, it sounds like it will probably be a huge rock opera. On top of that, ZTV is planned to make a return. I can’t wait to see what Devin could possibly come up with in the Ziltoid universe! It’s sure to be nuts.

As always, we’ll be sure to fill you in when Devin drops some knowledge and wisdom. In the meantime, Devin will also be very busy planning for his Retinal Circus show in London in October this year, which promises to be the most definitive Devin show to date – and that’s on top of his recent run of entire album shows. More details here!

Yes, this is actually my tree.

INDEED, EARTHLINGS. As a small way of saying thank you for helping us reach 2000 likes on Facebook, we’ll be giving away a Ziltoid plush puppet. I was so excited when these omniscient plushes went on sale that I purchased two of them — one for myself and one for you folks to fight over! Mine is hanging out on top of the Christmas tree in my house. While it’s doubtful I could get it to you in time for Christmas, you could do some other cool stuff with him too! You could:

  • Walk around with him on your hand and have conversations a la Mr. Garrison and Mr. Hat.
  • Pretend to be Devin Townsend.
  • Scare a baby
  • Attach him to your car’s radio antenna, so you can Hyperdrive.
  • And some other stuff, I’m sure!

But we want to make sure that this goes to someone worthy of His Greatness, The Mighty Ziltoid. Here’s what you gotta do; after the jump, we have a trivia questionnaire that you need to fill out concerning Ziltoid. The more questions you get correct, the greater your chance is of winning, so don’t feel defeated if you can’t get them all. Email us all of your answers to mail[at]heavyblogisheavy[dot]com with the subject “I AM OMNISCIENT!” I’ll give you guys a week. How does that sound? Here are the questions:

Anyone who reads our humble ramblings on even a semi-frequent basis will know of our love for Devin Townsend. I don’t think there’s one of us on the staff who doesn’t have at least a passing interest in him, and so when it was announced that his Devin Townsend Project would be playing all four albums of the now complete series in a run of special dates in London, I knew that attendance of at least one was compulsory. Being that Deconstruction is by far and away my favourite of the four, this date at the University of London Union was always going to be the one.

The extra treat was that support was to come from Norway’s own Shining, whose stunning 2010 release Blackjazz made a number of our top ten lists, and I had it on excellent authority that they are extremely tight live.

LITTLE ZILTOID PUPPETS FOR SALE OMGOMGOMG.

I’m so stoked on this, I just bought two of them. I only plan on keeping one of them. You’ll see!

The might Canadian maestro Devin Townsend and his…erm, project people-type denizens…recently toured Europe ahead before the veritable shitstorm that will have inevitably landed at his doorstep with the release of Deconstruction and Ghost hit. They saw fit to document the drive from Warsaw, Poland to London.

Not a lot of Devy face time, but FETID CUP OF BLISTERING COFFEE I WANT A ZILTOID PLUSHIE.

BALLS.

Alternatively, ‘Kurt Ballou: epic cocktease’

Alright, so it seems I got way too excited about the prospect of a new Old Man Gloom album, and blew the tidbit of information from producer Kurt Ballou’s Facebook out of all proportion. Dang it!

As our big brother Metalsucks reports, Kurt recently retracted his previous statement, saying:

whoops. nevermind about Old Man Gloom. they forgot to write songs, so they’ve cancelled

And in response to the understandable disappointment:

hey, i want an new OMG too. i think i’m just going to write it and record it myself and see if i can pass it off as them. i have played drums, guitar, and sang on their records before, so it’s ok, right? it will be called “easter.”

So it could happen, but not any time soon. In the words of Ziltoid, BALLS!

With their new album out this very week, and a Stateside tour kicking off this week supporting Protest the Hero, heroes of the djent scene TesseracT are undoubtedly very busy, but guitarist James Monteith was kind enough to take the time to sit down and respond to my wild ramblings.

He reflects on the measure of the band’s recent success, the new album, and meeting fans at his least rock-star moment…

Hi James, thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions. First up: I hope it isn’t too presumptuous to say it’s been a pretty incredible year for you guys. It’s been a while since I’ve seen any band ‘catapulted’ (and I say this off-handedly because I don’t doubt that a huge amount of hard work has gone into your success so far) in the way you have. So how’s the ride been for you?!

Haha – intense, exhausting and exciting I guess…although I don’t think we’ve had a chance to take our feet of the accelerator and really reflect. Up until recently we were totally D.I.Y. with a plan to achieve as much as we could on our own steam before bringing in any other people or companies. Once we hit our inevitable ceiling, Century Media came in and did a great job of building on our ground work and suddenly we’re here! As I say it’s been non-stop work and has felt quite gradual, but I can see how we maybe perceived as an overnight success! However I don’t feel we’re at all a ‘successful band’ yet, but one who has enjoyed some small successes. We’ve been given a great opportunity, so this is hopefully just the beginning.

Devin Townsend is one of the few reasons why I even bother checking Twitter these days. Dev’s pretty open about the progress he’s making on his many projects, talking about the mixes on Ghost, preparing for Deconstruction, his current tour with Tesseract, and most recently, preparing his entire Ziltoid The Omniscient album for a release on the Rock Band Network. You can keep up to date with Hevy Devy news right here.

As of yesterday, Devin was  halfway through work on preparing Ziltoid The Omniscient for release on the Rock Band Network, exporting all the stem tracks and changing some Ziltoid dialogue so he mocks the player throughout the song until the end. Devin will also be adding guitar solos Expect a lot of poop and balls jokes, but who would want anything else?!

There are apparently more surprises in store, so more news as I get it. I can already assume that week’s paycheck will be taking a dent already!

Oh fucking finally, the audiophiles who have decent music taste will now be able to own Devin Townsend’s back catalog on colored vinyl. I’m excited!

Cash is tight, but I’m definitely going to try and get Ziltoid and Addicted! if I can, and maybe Ki if I’m lucky. Check out Back on Black for more tasty details and ordering these bad boys.

Devin Townsend Battles Ziltoid!

The Finnish are so unbelievably lucky to witness the battle of the century unfold before their eyes when Devin Townsend dueled against Ziltoid The Omniscient in a fury of fretboard wankery at Tuska Festival 2010.

Check out the Hello Kitty strat. Ziltoid means business.

Also during this performance, Devin played the album Ziltoid: The Omniscient in its entirety. Check out “Planet Smasher” with Testament’s Chuck Billy and “Color Your World” after the jump. What a great show. I wish I could have been there, man.
