Probably one of the most highly anticipated records of the past decade, Wintersun‘s Time I is just over a month away. The excitement is at an all time high! Studio videos and teasers have been slowly rolling in, and the band recently unveiled a short clip of a choir session for the record. Here’s the statement that accompanied the video:

In June 2012 we recorded choirs for the final chorus of “Sons of Winter and Stars”. We asked some friends from fellow bands to help us out. We were honored that all of them were excited to do it. We knew that this would turn out to be something special. The recording took place at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, Finland. The choir consisted of Markus and Sami from Ensiferum; Mathias, Olli and Jukka-Pekka from Turisas; Heri from Tyr; Mikko from Kiuas and Teemu and Jukka from Wintersun. It was a real pleasure to see all these talented guys around the microphone singing their hearts outs! And the end result was amazing! Thanks guys! Here´s some video footage from the session, enjoy!

You can watch the video below:

This sounds amazing. Time I can’t come fast enough. The album is due out October 23rd on Nuclear Blast Records.

Midway through the 2000′s, folk metal was in full swing. European festivals were packed to the hilt with bands packing flutes, lutes and even a suspect number of kilts, and for a few summers it seemed like you couldn’t get away from the likes of KorpiklanniFinntroll and Turisas because they played EVERYWHERE. It sure was great fun — infectious melodies set against surging, upbeat metal? Count me in.

But it was pretty shallow fun and the dream died out pretty quickly, leaving behind only the biggest players and a handful of more serious acts with a dedicated fanbase. Ensiferum and their brother act Wintersun are arguably the most successful bands in that respect and with both bands releasing new material later this year (knock on wood), the latter half of 2012 looks set to be dominated by those epic folk-ified metal songs that both bands do so well. ‘Burning Leaves‘ gives us our first real taste of Ensiferum‘s upcoming album Unsung Heroes and it looks set to easily recapture that unspoken magic that made their Iron-era material so enchanting, giving the band yet another anthem to belt out across Europe this summer – drinking horns at the ready.

Unsung Heroes is due out August 27th on Spinefarm Records.

2011 was an absolutely absurd year for not only metal, but music in general. Such marvelous records from the best names in music. But no doubt that you know this, so lets not waste time, eh?

I didn’t really pay all that much attention earlier this week when I saw news of a plane crash in Warsaw, Poland. Call me cold if you will, but I saw that no-one was injured and didn’t really delve much further than that. I know bad news never relents, but I’ve been steering clear of non-essential news as much as possible lately. Things bum you out enough as it is without hearing about supposedly upstanding people beating their kids, or even worse, absolute monsters murdering their children for talking to an ‘infidel’. I will never understand people.

As it happens though, there was a point of interest to come out of this crash, insofar that Polish death metal outfit Decapitated, who were returning from tour in America, were on the plane.

Now, as I said, no-one was hurt, but the extremely unfortunate consequence is that the band have had to cancel their slot at this Saturday’s Damnation Festival in Leeds. A statement said:

“We are extremely sorry to inform our fans, that due to unforeseen circumstances that are out of our control, we will unfortunately have to cancel our shows in Aalborg (Aalborg Metal Festival) and Leeds (Damnation Festival)”

A huge blow for anyone hoping to catch them – and indeed anyone who would have anyway – but given the band’s history with accidents, we can breathe a sigh of relief that they are unscathed – many will recall their automotive accident in 2007 that killed drummer Witold “Vitek” Kiełtyka, and the band only recently returned with the excellend Carnival Is Forever. No specific reason has been given for the cancellations, but I can only imagine what kind of memories it brought back.

However the show – the seventh edition of Damnation – must go on, and with Ulver extending their set to 90 minutes, you’ll still be well placed for a day of awesome metal if you’re in the area. There are some absolute gems still to be seen, including Shining, God Is An Astronaut, Turisas, Humanfly and the headliner Devin Townsend amongst others.

So I decided to do what Dan did on a slow news day. This list is in no particular order. Enjoy.

1) Smaragos – “Furnace

This song is so good.  So many layers happening at the same time makes for a chaotic but memorable experience.  The numerous influences are shown, and that tabla/sitar solo just blows me away.

2) Red Fang – “Wires

I love new music that harkens back to old times.  This huge fest of stoner rock is a perfect example.  The vocalist has such a great voice, and the riff is beyond catchy.  The whole album is this good, so check it out immediately.

I’ll admit it; this video confuses me a bit. I mean, I kinda get the musical angle – it’s very folk-metalish, and the Viking imagery evoked not least by the album cover are easy enough concepts to grasp. Very Lord of the Rings. Why the fuck they’re fighting whatever it is that can’t be combatted sitting on their asses (I get muddy on this point) with crossbows and swords when they’re clearly in the age of the combustion engine and colour photography is slightly odd, but that’s just me.

Either way, it’s a well shot video and the song ain’t half bad, if you’re into that sort of thing. Dan liked it well enough when he reviewed their most recent album (also called Stand Up And Fight, funnily enough. They likes the fightings it seems.) back in February.

Yesterday we pointed you in the direction of Turisas‘ new album Stand Up And Fight streaming over at MySpace (of all places). If you like your folk metal with more progressive influences, then Moonsorrow‘s epic new album Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa is streaming at Record Shop X for a week only, so hop on that. It’s powerful stuff!

Technically the album is already out in Finland, but it doesn’t see an official UK release until March 21st on Spinefarm Records; totally another reason to celebrate Prog-Metal March! The US release is still pending, however. International releases are fucking dumb. At least you don’t have to resort to pirating it to hear it for free, right?

Right?

You WILL instantly grow a beard and develop a craving for mead. That goes for you too ladies; you have been warned.

Go give it a listen; our very own Dan enjoyed it to a 4/5 degree, which isn’t certainly worth a go don’t you think?

It’s a quiet morning, the air is still with just the slightest of breeze. Off in the distance a storm approaches, covering the sky in veil of black and grays. A cold chill runs down your back, but you don’t turn away, you stand and face your fears. With sword in hand you await your enemy, as they slowly begin to appear along the horizon, there numbers growing as they become more visible. But there is nothing to fear, as you’re troops stand alongside you, prepared to fight and die, obeying any order you give them. As the enemy draws ever closer, you let out a mighty battle cry and begin to charge in to what will likely be, the battle of your lives. Now just imagine the kind of music that might be playing throughout this battle…
