I’m sure you know by now that I am certainly not overly fond of the title track to upcoming Trivium album In Waves, as it’s basically their laziest song yet. Fortunately, the band are now streaming a much better song from In Waves, titled “Dusk Dismantled.” It’s certainly harder hitting than “In Waves,” featuring more prominent use of growls. That isn’t necessarily why it’s better though; the song is apparently more varied in its structure, and has a kickass riff around halfway in. Give it a listen below.

Obviously, it isn’t exactly enough to make me anticipate the album, but I just might give it a spin when it drops August 9th on Roadrunner Records.

Full disclosure: I haven’t been keeping up with Trivium. Haven’t cared in years, even. When I was 16, I foolishly thought they were the second coming of Metallica. We all make mistakes. I still hold Ascendancy to be one of the greatest albums in the genre of metalcore (I know, BOAT RUDDER STRANGE MOUNTAIN and all that), but I just don’t care about anything else they’ve done — especially their new song “In Waves,” which is essentially the laziest song they’ve ever written.

That said, I agree with good ol’ uncle Axl at Metalsucks; their new album art is pretty damn sweet.

Apparently, they’ve also got a new video that debuted over at Alt-Press, which Axl says is pretty neat as well. Unfortunately, I can’t watch it because my computer’s fan is busted and my computer will overheat if I do anything super-strenuous, like anything other than this. I’ll just take his word for it. It’s embedded after the jump with the tracklist.

I’m shamefully about three months behind on this review, and despite being added to my mental list of ‘bands I need to stop being a lazy dick about,’ once all the praise came in for Sylosis‘ sophomore release Edge of the Earth, I only recently even bothered listening to it. Go ahead and chalk that up to one of my biggest mistakes of the year. My mistake has been rectified. This particular four-piece from Reading, England combines classic Bay Area thrash with Swedish melodic death metal and a touch of progressive influence. Edge of the Earth is certainly one of the more exciting melodic extreme metal records so far this year.

Songs You Might Have Missed

Have you ever noticed how some bands have a few songs that are different from the rest of the band’s catalog? Songs that are really awesome, but are unnoticed because non-fans of the band aren’t interested enough to dig for them? Well, thankfully you have me, and I can point such songs out to you. Here we go!

Trivium – Shogun

Most people know Trivium as Metallica wannabes or an above average metal band. Those people probably didn’t listen to their 2008 album Shogun closely enough. This album is a love letter to progressive metal, thrash, and classic heavy metal. The most interesting track in the album is without doubt the title track, which is a 10+ minute progressive epic, with an Opeth-like interlude with acoustic guitars, a great buildup and a fitting release to that buildup. Listen to this song, and it might change your opinion of the band.

Winds of Plague – Approach the Podium

Much like Trivium, Winds of Plague is also a band that is hated by a lot of people. They have the whole bro-core thing going on, and their songs have terrible breakdowns. Or at least that’s what you would think. Their 2009 release, The Great Stone War is barely even deathcore at times, it’s quite progressive, it’s epic and intricate. “Approach the Podium” is probably a track that most skip, because it begins with what most would consider a bad breakdown. The song becomes quite interesting after that though. It’s very symphonic and progressive. The buildup near the end is very baroque and epic, and the ending breakdown is perfectly set up. It’s not for everyone, but if you can get past its shortcomings the song feels like the audio equivalent of watching The Lord of The Rings.

Confrontational headline aside, I don’t have an opinion either way about either of these bands! Sensationalism, I know. Nothing gets hits like enraged music fans. First up, Suicide Silence!

I’ve never enjoyed Suicide Silence in the slightest but then again, I can’t exactly say I hate them for doing what they do. I’d rather exhaust all of my vitriol on bands that, you know, actually deserve it. I’d actually go as far as to say that if you go out of your way to be pissed off at Suicide Silence, you need to get some new hobbies and stop wasting your time. Metalsucks tipped me off this morning that the band has released a new song titled “You Only Live Once.” I gave it the ol’ schoolboy try and gave it a metaphorical spin, and it wasn’t all that bad. In fact, I’d probably have to agree with Axl’s assessment of the track as sounding a bit like Slipknot with more brutal vocals and a handful of chugs thrown in. Growing up listening to Slipknot though, it doesn’t really phase me as much as some. Such is life.

The new Suicide Silence album, The Black Crown, is out July 12th on Century Media Records.

So following Dormition’s Top Tunes I decided to share my own favorites from this year. There’s some overlap, so I decided to exclude songs that he already included. This is a loosely ordered list, so don’t rage on in the comments section about band A being better/worse than band B.

1) Encircle – “Watch the Sky Fall

This one’s by my friend Anthony DiGiacomo. I don’t usually like solely instrumental music, but this one’s pretty good. And I’ve heard more tracks from his upcoming debut album, Watch the Sky Fall, and they’re all great. If you’re a fan of Cloudkicker, Veil of Maya and Meshuggah; you should definitely keep your eyes open for this one. As more becomes available, I’ll share them with you. In the meantime, check out his Youtube channel or Encircle’s Facebook page for more stuff by him including other original songs and many covers.

2) Tre Watson – “Charmander is Evolving!

Tre is also a good friend of mine, and he’s probably the only other artist that I enjoy in this vein. This is a redo of his older track “Charmander used Flamethrower!”. He has an EP coming later this year, and having heard some of it, I can say that it is insane. Again, keep checking back for more news on his work, and in the meantime you can download his previous albums from his BandCamp page, and become a fan on Facebook.

Maruta are a fairly new band to me; I only recently heard their 2008 debut, In Narcosis. But it is definitely an underrated album full to the brim with scorching technical grindcore so I was pretty excited to find out that Invisible Oranges are streaming a new song “Strain” from upcoming album Forward Into Regression. It does not disappoint, ‘Strain‘ is tight and fercious, the way techgrind should be. Also, new drummer Danny Morris puts on an amazing performance on this track, he came into the fold after previous drummer Nick Augusto left to play with Trivium.

Forward Into Regression comes out on the 8th of March on Willowtip Records, if you go to the artist page over at Willowtip you can hear two more songs from the new album; “March Forward (Into Regression)” and “Hand Of The Overseer.”

Like I mentioned last time, my metal roots were planted in nu-metal. Korn were a big part of my younger teenage years, and set me off in the right foot. During this time, I had also discovered another big name in nu-metal, Slipknot, nu-metal/metalcore band Ill Nino, and up-and-coming metalcore band Trivium. If Korn was my way of dipping in my toe to test the waters, this is the moment where I jumped in.

My experience with Slipknot came before these other bands. I’ve heard of them during my childhood and thought the masked metallers were creepy as hell (let’s face it, those outside of the metal scene think Slipknot are metal, as was the case when I first became aware of it.) I first heard “Wait and Bleed” on the Scream movie soundtrack that I found laying around the house. What I heard surprised me, as I didn’t expect a band that looked like that to play something that was remotely catchy. I listened to the song quite a bit, but never really bothered to seek out any more of their music for quite a long time.

Whoever told Munky to put on face paint should be punched in the dick.

In a move that makes the most sense out of any of the news I’ve read today, Blabbermouth reported that Jonathan Davis confirmed rumors that Korn have signed to Roadrunner Records, home to big name metal bands Slipknot, Stone Sour, Soulfly, Killswitch Engage, DevilDriver, Trivium, and more.

Speaking on the move, Jonathan said in an interview with KQXR radio in Boise, Idaho:

“We’re going to be going with Roadrunner, but that’s all so fun. I’m really excited to be doing this because they’re one of the last real record labels left that lets bands do what they want to do. And all the great bands they’ve had on that label… it seems like a good home for us right now.”

Their upcoming album, Korn III – Remember Who You Are is due out this summer. I’ll admit I’m actually kind of excited about this album, as it’s supposed to be a return to the sound of their first couple of albums. And before you judge me and call me out, don’t forget that we were all blasting Korn in the 90′s. Korn was my first stepping stone into the world of metal, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who would be stuck listening to some other garbage if Korn hadn’t come along. I just happen to be more comfortable admitting it, I guess.

So there’s that. Bitch and moan now if you want, but remember, it’s Roadrunner Records. They signed Nickelback.

This is a good thing. I didn’t like it when they tried too hard to be 80s metal.

I haven’t been following Trivium in the last little bit, so I don’t know if Matt went back to screaming most of the time or not, but his screams are turning more into lower growls apparently. I like it. It’s definitely a step up.

“Shattering The Skies Above” is from the God Of War 3 soundtrack EP God of War: Blood & Metal, which also features Dream Theater, Opeth, Killswitch Engage, and Taking Dawn. The soundtrack is available with purchase of God Of War 3: Ultimate Edition, which sells for about $100. It’s due out in March.
