Tag Archive: Tre Watson

For those who don’t know of Encircle, it is a one-man labor of love tended by Anthony DiGiacomo. He plays a somewhat unique take on metal, fusing djent, progressive, and a suggestion of post-rock into his music. He has posted a teaser for his LP entitled Watch the Sky Fall that will be self-released via his bandcamp. The album will contain three tracks from his EP of the same name, and there will be nine new tracks in the album.

Count me excited. No official date yet, but you can catch all his news on his official facebook and official youtube. Also, a neat little tidbit:  Both his EP and his upcoming LP were mastered by Tre Watson, and the two have even collaborated on a song. Be sure to follow him and his musical endeavours.

I’m becoming more and more interested in the art and science of producing an album-recording techniques, mixing, mastering, etc. You can read on the subject for hours and barely scratch the surface. With today’s technology and thanks to the Internet, anybody can record, mix, and put out an album very cheaply. This has definitely leveled the playing field between the ‘big time’ metal producers and the “bedroom” producers, which in itself is a very interesting topic that I may have to revisit in a future post.

But what I’m curious about is what you people out there want in a modern metal production.  Besides the obvious stuff like “I hate sterile sounding production” or “I hate triggered drums and autotune,” what sonic qualities do you need to hear done right in order to enjoy an album? What are some of the things that, when they are done wrong, either annoy you, drive you nuts, or full-on rape your eardrums in the worst way? Can poor production ruin an album for you?

Admittedly, I’ve never paid much attention to Cam Argon, aka “Big Chocolate“, or his various musical endeavors. I just didn’t have the bandwidth for a kid who specializes in home-made dubstep and deathcore, no matter how many people were swinging on his nuts. But 2011 has been a year of firsts for me, and I’m glad I decided to start paying attention to more artists in the ‘one man bedroom band’ genre, because there has been some fabulous music coming our way from these dudes. 2011 has already seen great releases from Keith Merrow, Paul Wardingham, Tre Watson, and Drewsif Stalin, just to name a few. I’m sure part of the reason I got  interested in and became a fan of these artists is that I’ve been dabbling in the field myself. So I’ve been listening to a lot of other one man productions to kind of chart myself against the competition, so to speak. And if I’m being honest, every one of the guys I just listed makes me want to give up music and producing forever because they blow my shit out of the water. Anyway…

Now we have Big Chocolate’s full length release from his Disfiguring The Goddess project. An utterly crushing, futuristic, slamming death metal slab that is not just ‘impressive for a homegrown, self-produced project’. No sir, what we have here in Circle of Nine is an album that may be the future of death metal as we know it, and could very well be one of the final nails in the coffin of the entire deathcore genre.

So following Dormition’s Top Tunes I decided to share my own favorites from this year. There’s some overlap, so I decided to exclude songs that he already included. This is a loosely ordered list, so don’t rage on in the comments section about band A being better/worse than band B.

1) Encircle – “Watch the Sky Fall

This one’s by my friend Anthony DiGiacomo. I don’t usually like solely instrumental music, but this one’s pretty good. And I’ve heard more tracks from his upcoming debut album, Watch the Sky Fall, and they’re all great. If you’re a fan of Cloudkicker, Veil of Maya and Meshuggah; you should definitely keep your eyes open for this one. As more becomes available, I’ll share them with you. In the meantime, check out his Youtube channel or Encircle’s Facebook page for more stuff by him including other original songs and many covers.

2) Tre Watson – “Charmander is Evolving!

Tre is also a good friend of mine, and he’s probably the only other artist that I enjoy in this vein. This is a redo of his older track “Charmander used Flamethrower!”. He has an EP coming later this year, and having heard some of it, I can say that it is insane. Again, keep checking back for more news on his work, and in the meantime you can download his previous albums from his BandCamp page, and become a fan on Facebook.

After constant delays and a lineup change or two, Carthage, the band founded by our good friend Tre Watson on guitar and co-handling vocal duties, has uploaded a new song “Juxtaposition.” Carthage sits comfortably in the realm of bands like Whitechapel, Born of Osiris, and Veil of Maya without relying on breakdowns as a songwriting crutch. There’s a few catchy riffs thrown out, as expected with Tre at the helm. Listen and download below!

Carthage – Juxtaposition

Carthage plans to have an EP out this spring. Be sure to keep up with them on Facebook!

This one is kind of special. This is my project that I’ve been working on for years, and I’ve finally got a chance to record it and make it real thanks to my good friend Tre Watson, who is producing for me. I would call the genre progressive/technical death metal, but if you want to be particular, there are other influences too. Mainly Nile, Psycroptic, Gorod, and Dying Fetus, but all of them with a more progressive and melodic/epic flair. There are evil death metal riffs, sometimes using 8 strings guitars, orchestral sections, clean vocals, you name it. Hopefully it will be amazing.

I’m working on the debut release, called Desiccation. No release date yet. All songs are written and performed by me, except for a few parts, and Tre Watson does quite a bit of guest solo work.

Here’s a tentative tracklist

Desiccation

01. Tomb of Time
02. Eternal Sands
03. Ynareth the Destroyer
04. Nomad
05. Wormhole Oasis
06. The Shadow Magistrate
07. Casualties of Domination
08. Conquering Worlds

Check out the facebook page of the project to listen to “Eternal Sands” and another video, and more songs will come in the near future!

Tre Watson Is Super Effective!

I’m sure you folks remember Tre Watson‘s ode to everyone’s favorite first gen starter Pokemon, “Charmander Used Flamethrower” from his debut album Lexicon of the Human Subconscious. Of course you do, because it was awesome and I linked to it in the previous sentence.

Well Tre Watson re-recorded the song for a Djentlemen’s Club exclusive, “Charmander Is Evolving!” The song features 8-bit synth leads and solos and tighter production. You can stream that radness above.

If you haven’t yet, you need to check out that new Tre Watson album Death of A Monarch at this location. Quality riffage at the low low price of whatever the hell you feel like.

Friend of the site Tre Watson released his highly anticipated second album today! Death of a Monarch can be streamed below and purchased for whatever you feel compelled to give!

Fantastic work! Congratulations, Tre! You’ve blown Lexicon out of the water!

Now complete with vocals from Ray Clark from Shapeshifter and a guest solo from Anthony DiGiacomo of Encircle!

Tre Watson‘s new instrumental album Death of a Monarch goes live tomorrow! Make sure you check it out at his bandcamp page! The version with vocals, Rebirth, is due out at a later date!

- JR

With less than a week till the release of his sophomore album Death of a Monarch, Tre Watson decided to post the final version of “Downfall of the Stars” on YouTube to give people a taste of what’s to come.

Death of a Monarch is meant to mark the “death” of the djent style in Tre’s new work, so if you’re expecting a chugfest, you’re going to have to look elsewhere, as this album is a step into more of a prog direction. In fact, the album is fairly diverse, as you’ll see next Tuesday!
