Touche Amore are one of the best new bands to come around. Their fusion of hardcore music with almost pop guitar melodies is really awesome, and I especially dug their recent split with Pianos Become The Teeth when they took a more post-rock turn. It really boded well for them, and as of today, the band are already done tracking drums for the newest record, set to be released this fall via Deathwish Inc. I’ll tell you, it’s going to be a big year for Deathwish: Touche Amore, Deafheaven, Harms Way, Young And In The Way and possibly even Trap Them all have records set to come out, and I’m stoked for all of them, even more so because I know that Deathwish is a killer label who always puts out quality releases. Watch the teaser video below and keep up with their Facebook, and we’ll have more news as it comes!

Reel Metal

Well folks, it’s 2013 and I’m long overdue in returning my ear to the ground for metal music videos. There were a lot of awesome videos that made away clean from my scrutiny in 2012, but alas I have returned with my sword unsheathed; armed for battle and hell-bent on never letting an absence of my contribution extend to such a duration again – despite how demanding my real-world job may be.

Onward!

Sometimes limited and one-off local and regional shows are the best and most intimate. They’re often unique and special experiences that national tours can’t offer. Our photographer Chris Collins recently attended one such show and captured photos of influential hardcore act Touche Amore and avant garde/progressive death metal group Baring Teeth at La Grange in Dallas, TX. Check out the photos after the jump!

DNF, formerly known as Duke Nukem Forever, were a typical hardcore outfit with powerviolence tendencies jutting out here and there. For those not in the know, powerviolence is a subgenre of hardcore that is a bit faster, but also a lot slower. Bands like Black Flag were a major influence as they switched from early hardcore to more sludgy tunes. Bands like Infest, Spazz, and Charles Bronson started popping up around the country that went from straight up hardcore to straight up sludge.

Lets get one thing clear; 2011 was a gnarly year for music, and regardless of what I listed and what was missed, this year provided a shit ton of albums that made this a year we won’t soon forget, and one that will be hard to top. I originally had a top 20, but decided to dwindle it down to just 10. Of course this lead to cutting out a bunch of great albums, but I wanted to focus on the ones that actually stuck with me and gave me more than just a “Wow, that sounds cool!” reaction. Anyway, 2012, you have some big shoes to fill. Now without further ado, here are my picks for the top 10 albums of 2011…

2011 was an absolutely absurd year for not only metal, but music in general. Such marvelous records from the best names in music. But no doubt that you know this, so lets not waste time, eh?

Aaaaaaaand yet another awesome tour for you North American types this autumn, this time with seminal screamo outfit Circle Takes The Square.

CTTS have been quiet for quite some time now, but they’re set to release their new album Decompositions: Volume I sometime this November, and I’m pretty stoked on that shit.

There’s no set support, but most of the dates will feature several of City of Ships, Touché Amoré and Pianos Become The Teeth. A couple also feature Thou, who are rather excellent.

Here’s what we have at the moment:

10/23 Baltimore, MD – The Ottobar (feat. City Of Ships, Pala)
10/24 Philadelphia, PA – Pi Lam (feat. GholasGods and QueensFull of Hell)

More details to come on those last few shows, and we’ll try and get those to you when they come our way.

There’s are also tentative details coming through about shows from The Chariot with VannaThe Crimson ArmadaFormer Thieves and Listener (whose frontman Dan Smith is the guy who does the intense spoken-word section on David De La Hoz). More details on that too when they are announced.

So fall’s looking pretty good for you guys as far as tours go. I’m not sure what the national coverage is like, but between the Between the Buried and Me/Animals As Leaders/TesseracT, Devin Townsend Project/The Ocean, Mastodon/Dillinger, Decapitated/Decrepit Birth/Fleshgod ApocalypseEnslaved/Alcest, Kvelertak/Skeletonwitch, The Black Dahlia Murder/All Shall PerishAna Kefr and The Bled runs, you’re bound to be able to see something cool (unless you live in the arse-end of nowhere, eh JR?). Just look at that list. Phew!
