<p>An interesting turn of events this one. As you&#8217;ll probably know, <strong>The HAARP Machine </strong>recently underwent huge line-up changes leaving three particularly great musicians without a proper place to call home. Drummer Alex Rudinger was quickly snapped up into <strong>The Faceless</strong> and bassist Ollie Rooney decided to go it alone, just leaving vocalist Mike Semesky left as a free agent.</p>
<p>However, with the recent announcement that long-time vocalist Kasper Thomsen has left the band, <strong>Raunchy </strong>have quickly announced Semesky as his replacement. You can read the statement from the band after the jump.</p>

<p>By now you&#8217;re all probably aware of the fate of<strong> The HAARP Machine</strong> in recent weeks: <a title="Everyone Who Isn’t Al Mu’min Quits The HAARP Machine" href="http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/2013/01/25/everyone-who-isnt-al-mumin-quits-the-haarp-machine/" target="_blank">3/4 of the band (so basically everyone except Mu&#8217;min) left</a>, right before a huge European tour with <strong>Born Of Osiris, After The Burial </strong>and<strong> Monuments,</strong> leaving the band, or Mu&#8217;min I should say, in quite the predicament. How could he possibly find 3 new band member in time or the tour, which is in a few weeks? Would he get people good enough to play his music? Well, we now have the answer.</p>

<p>In case you just want to skip the video, essentially Mu&#8217;min makes tea, then goes into a rehearsal space with a new vocalist and bassist. The video is supposed to be all shady and mysterious about who is involved in the new lineup, but word has already made it out that <strong>Ever Forthright</strong> guitarist Nicholas Llerandi and vocalist/saxophonist Chris Barretto (ex-<strong>Periphery</strong>, in case you&#8217;ve forgotten) will be filling in on bass and vocals, respectively. No word on who has been tapped to play drums yet, however.</p>

<p>A lot has been happening over the last few days in <b>The Faceless</b> camp. So here&#8217;s the round up in the style of a news sandwich (good, bad, good):</p>
<p>After the <a href="http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/2013/01/24/lyle-cooper-parts-ways-with-the-faceless/">recent departure of long time drummer Lyle Cooper </a><em>(above, right of center)</em>, absolutely no one was left wondering about who would fill the drum stool. So in a move that will surprise no one, Alex Rudinger <a title="Everyone Who Isn’t Al Mu’min Quits The HAARP Machine" href="http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/2013/01/25/everyone-who-isnt-al-mumin-quits-the-haarp-machine/" target="_blank">of the recently shaken up <b>The HAARP Machine</b></a> has been drafted to fill the space &#8212; the official announcement is as follows:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;To clear the air on a few details, The Faceless has decided to part ways with drummer Lyle Cooper due to a growing difference in the level of commitment to the project. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors and we&#8217;re sure he&#8217;ll continue to be successful with music. Having said that, we are very excited to announce that Alex Rudinger is our new full time drummer. We just played our first 3 shows with him in Mexico and what he brings to the band both musically and personally, is simply astounding. We are looking forward to a great future with Alex.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Needless to say, Rudinger is <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T27VWiFhUNY">an absolute beast behind the kit</a> and is clearly more than talented enough to cope with the all the twists and turns Keene can throw at him, so here&#8217;s to hoping this is a long lasting tenure (for once).</p>
<p>For those of us in these grand ol&#8217; isles of Britania, the news was tainted a little as it came with the announcement that the band&#8217;s upcoming UK tour alongside <b>The Safety Fire</b> has been cancelled due to visa issues:</p>
<blockquote><p>Due to Visa issues with The Faceless, our forthcoming tour has unfortunately been cancelled. Refunds for tickets are available from your place of purchase.</p>
<p>Thank you to all of our fans who bought tickets for these shows. We will try to make it up to you as soon as possible &#8211; TSF</p></blockquote>
<p>This statement was later echoed on <strong>The Faceless</strong>&#8216;s page, also suggesting that the tour will be rescheduled at some point.</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve tried to avoid persistent rumors surrounding<strong> The HAARP Machine</strong> guitarist Al Mu&#8217;min in the past. Ex-members of the band and people generally in the know came out about how not only was Al Mu&#8217;min hard to get along with (it was said that he threatened to burn someone&#8217;s house down), but he could barely even play his guitar parts, relying on studio magic and live backing tracks to get by. While the rumors seemed highly likely to be true, we&#8217;ve generally shied against this sort of thing, just as we did with the whole Rings of Saturn fiasco from last year. Again, these are rumors that should be taken with a grain of salt, and we do not claim to either confirm nor deny them.</p>
<p>However, these rumors have a little more weight, as everyone in the band who isn&#8217;t Al Mu&#8217;min has left. Vocalist Mike Semesky sent out the following press release early this morning and made it pretty clear that it was all because of Mu&#8217;min (below emphasis mine):</p>

<div>&#8220;<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Due to irreconcilable personal differences with our guitarist Al Mu&#8217;min</span>, the three of us (Alex, Ollie, and I) have decided to part ways with The|<em>HAARP</em>|<em>Machine</em>  This was in no way an easy decision to make but the three of us feel that it is in our best interest to pursue other musical endeavors at this time. We would like to thank all of our fans, our friends and families, Sumerian Records, and everyone else who supported our band along the way. Rest assured that the three of us are in no way giving up on our music careers and we&#8217;d encourage you all to follow our individual YouTube channels to keep up with our tunes while we are in pursuit of our new musical homes.</div>

<p>Now it&#8217;s hard telling where The HAARP Machine will end up. Al Mu&#8217;min may say &#8220;fuck it&#8221; after this blow and just dissolve The HAARP Machine; after all, why go through the trouble of finding a whole new band? It&#8217;s also worth mentioning that <a title="Make Me Famous Is Done; Band Dropped By Sumerian Records" href="http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/2012/11/30/make-me-famous-is-done-band-dropped-by-sumerian-records/" target="_blank">Sumerian Records got pissed and dropped an even more successful band that did this sort of thing</a>, so The HAARP Machine may just be done. If Mu&#8217;min is persistent, we could see him sticking to it as a DIY solo project. At any rate, this is a major blow to him, surely.</p>
<p>This also frees up drummer Alex Rudinger in joining <strong>The Faceless</strong>, as he&#8217;s already the fill-in for the vacant drummer spot. As far as I&#8217;m concerned, he traded up.</p>
<p>As of drafting this post, there&#8217;s been no statement or reaction from Mu&#8217;min or Sumerian Records. We&#8217;ll have more word on this as it comes in.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>UPDATE</strong></span>: Al Mu&#8217;min appears to have commented below:</p>
<blockquote><p>My qualms with my former bandmates are very little to do with my alleged dangerous nature and more to do with musical direction. Yes, whilst I concede to my ardent detractors that I&#8217;m not tightest of all players live I should add the songs on the album are quite difficult to pull off in a live context and I would honestly prefer a little support and positivity amongst my &#8216;metal&#8217; brethren. I wish you all a good day. Evidently my day has been ruined by this loss but I wish not for myself not to wallow in self-doubt and sorrow.</p></blockquote>

<p>After rumors spread online that The Faceless drummer Lyle Cooper had left the band &#8212; he was absent at a recent live show in Mexico &#8212; speculations have now been cleared up, and it is now known that Lyle Cooper has officially parted ways with The Faceless. Taking to his official Facebook page, Lyle had this to say:</p>
<blockquote><p>“I figured I’d clear up the air about my status with <strong>The Faceless</strong>.</p>
<p>After almost five years with the band I’ve decided to part ways. Over the last couple of years it seemed that the interests, goals and musical approach of the band was not that of my own. Also, managerial issues became too frequent with no resolution.</p>
<p>These issues, I felt, made it hard for me as an individual to produce as a creative and enthusiastic member. I’m sure that proceeding my departure, the band will have no trouble finding someone with the right mindset and talents to step in and keep the band moving forward.</p>
<p>Thank you to the fans and everyone who supported <strong>The Faceless</strong> throughout the years. I wish the band and its members nothing but continued success and make sure you catch them on their upcoming tours.</p>
<p>I will still be pursuing my other musical projects so look out for new <strong>Absvrdist </strong>and <strong>Abhorrent </strong>this year. -<strong>Lyle Cooper</strong>“</p></blockquote>
<p>Amid a slurry of recent band losses, this news is a little less shocking then it would have been a few weeks ago, but it is still a sad development. While I was never the biggest fan of The Faceless, it is clear that Lyle is a talented man, and his contribution to the band was always what entertained me the most. Best of luck to Lyle and all his future endeavors. I&#8217;ve not spent time iwth Absvrdist or the Abhorrent, but now I know where to go if I ever want to hear more from him.</p>
<p>The Faceless have yet to comment on these developments, so it is currently unknown if they have found a replacement for Cooper. <strong>The HAARP Machine</strong>&#8216;s Alex Rudinger was behind the kit at the band&#8217;s aforementioned show in Mexico, but it&#8217;s likely that he was just a last minute stand in. However, it wouldn&#8217;t be all that surprising if he was picked up to be Cooper&#8217;s permanent replacement.</p>

<p>This past Saturday, <strong>Revocation</strong> head honcho Dave Davidson (on the far right above) and new bassist Brett Bamberger (far left) got together with The Blaze 1330 for an interview, in which they talk about tons of cool stuff, such as the lyrical themes behind their new EP <em>Teratogenesis </em>(<a href="http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/2012/09/28/friday-rapid-fire-reviews-revocation-over-your-threshold-and-grave/#revocation">which we gave a 4.5/5</a>) or Relapse&#8217;s rationale for letting the band record said EP with Scion A/V and release it for free. However, what is the most intriguing bit comes around the 5:10 mark, where Dave mentions that he is in a &#8220;pseudo-band&#8221; with <strong>The HAARP Machine</strong>/<strong>Ordinance</strong> drummer Alex Rudinger, and that they are demoing material. As the frontman and main songwriter of my favorite band ever, I am beyond excited at the prospect of hearing new material from Dave. And Alex is a beast of a drummer, always in command of his craft and able to play so many different styles. At the very least, you can rest assured that they&#8217;re both in good company.</p>
<p>Will it be anything similar to their existing projects? Will it be something totally new and crazy? Will it even happen? It&#8217;s probably best not to jump to conclusions here, but for now we at least have Dave&#8217;s word on it, so why not hope? <a href="http://arizonametal.wordpress.com/2012/11/04/revocation-talks-to-the-blaze-1330-am/">Hear the full interview for yourself</a>, and you be the judge of it.</p>

<p>After much hype, delay, and a bit of controversy, the latest band to capture the hearts of many tech metal fans &#8212;<strong> The HAARP Machine</strong> &#8212; have laid their first offering <em>Disclosure</em> on the table. Taking up influence from an array of bands one would expect to be cited &#8212; <strong>The Faceless</strong> and <strong>Necrophagist,</strong> for instance &#8212; The HAARP Machine&#8217;s initial signing to Sumerian Records last year came with the inferred promise of a new group of rising stars in the prog world. The slight mystery surrounding the band and their music until the album&#8217;s release helped to fuel this interest and curiosity as well, but after all is said and done, The HAARP Machine&#8217;s debut album <em>Disclosure</em> won&#8217;t exactly propel them to new heights for the genre.</p>
<p><span id="more-33642"></span></p>
<p>On a musical front, the band&#8217;s driving sound seems to rise from the bedroom-born music scene where guitarists (in this case, HAARP head-honcho Al Mu&#8217;min) create projects that eventually transform into full bands and touring acts. As such, <em>Disclosure</em> aligns itself with the djent and tech-metal aesthetic in production and songwriting.<em> </em>What makes The HAARP Machine stand out among many of their faceless contemporaries is Mu&#8217;min&#8217;s embrace of his Arabic heritage as he brings in an interesting Eastern musical influence into <em>Disclosure.</em> The more exotic sounds of sitar, koto, and piano weave themselves into the compositions to make a comparatively more memorable and unique listening experience, though to some, the world-music passages may come across as gimmicky. It all works well in context however, and any outside influence that makes the oft-treaded sound flourish as it does on <em>Disclosure</em> is wholly welcomed.</p>
<p><em>Disclosure</em> takes a bit of a misstep on its lyrical approach, unfortunately. Throughout the history of the metal genre, it has been known for lyrical subject matter to take political stance, but <em>Disclosure</em> becomes almost obnoxiously concerned with conspiracy as it stands firmly atop its soapbox. The opening track <em>&#8216;Esoteric Agenda&#8217;</em> in particular is a hamfisted approach at a call to arms, sporting the lyrics, <em>&#8220;There were no weapons of mass destruction or mobile biological weapons labs. The agenda was to remove Saddam Hussein, to reap the oil, and establish a base&#8230; Open your eyes and see the world is not what it seems. Free your soul from the ties that bind us all. Time is upon us to wake up.&#8221;</em> The whole record feels like an angst-ridden critique of modern society and government, which would be fine had it not been written in a way that spoon-fed listeners the message while abandoning any notion of poetic depth or metaphor. The only thing that keeps much of this record from being indistinguishable from the rantings of a conservative conspiracy theorist is its lack of the word &#8220;sheeple&#8221; from being used in the liner notes.</p>
<p>The saving grace for the lyrical front is Mike Semesky&#8217;s vocal delivery. Semesky &#8212; known for his involvement in the bands <strong>Vestascension</strong> and <strong>Ordinance</strong> &#8212; is a brilliant and under-acknowledged vocalist whose incredible cleans make much of the album, with his work on leading single<em> &#8216;Pleiadian Keys&#8217;</em> and the title track being record highlights. Though, as a late addition to the group after the album was written, his performance, while great, shows signs of being highly directed and restrained. The band&#8217;s longevity and consistency have yet to be seen, but assuming Semesky is left to write his own lyrics and vocal melodies moving forward, the band can reach soaring new heights when utilizing his full potential.</p>
<p><em>Disclosure</em> is the type of album that makes for a pleasurable listening experience within the moment, but lacks much in the way of compelling hooks that stick with the listener in the grand scheme of things. <em>Disclosure</em> is more of a passing fling and has little staying power as we move forward, despite the expectations from fans of the genre had anticipated. Perhaps a greater integration of their psychedelic Eastern musical influence and less emphasis on gimmicky conspiracy theories can put them there. <em>Disclosure</em> is a good record to be sure, but the band have some growing to do before they can truly make their impact on a scene so desperate for a new savior.</p>

<p>How shocking is it really that<strong> The HAARP Machine</strong>&#8216;s first single is amazing?</p>
<p>&#8216;<em>Pleiadian Keys</em>&#8216; is everything I expected it to be outside of the older instrumental demo, mainly in the vocal department. Mike Semesky manages to thread melodious lines through the song that never step into needlessly complicated territory, but still get stuck in my head. The song sounds great from a production standpoint too. Each instrument is clearly heard and details all the nuances happening. Bonus points for making the song sound so damn huge, considering there really aren&#8217;t that many instruments contributing to the sound.</p>

<p>I can&#8217;t remember any specific headlining<strong> The Faceless</strong> tour that hit a big scale. I&#8217;m sure they&#8217;ve existed, but nothing sticks out in my mind immediately. With their third album <em>Autotheism</em> now under their belt, I&#8217;m sure they&#8217;re feeling it&#8217;s time to taste some more of this headlining business. They&#8217;re planning on doing just that this year, and they&#8217;re &#8220;thinking&#8221; of bringing along <strong>Fleshgod Apocalypse</strong> and <strong>The HAARP Machine</strong> so far. I shouldn&#8217;t have to tell you why this tour already breeds excellence.</p>

<p>Remember when <a title="The Haarp Machine To Release Record In October!" href="http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/2012/07/30/the-haarp-machine-to-release-record-in-october/">I told you about this in late July</a>? Well now I&#8217;m even more excited. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C41T2t5ckTE">The album trailer</a> is up and we&#8217;ve finally gotten a glimpse of the impending perfection. It&#8217;s a little early to call this one of the best albums of 2012, but it&#8217;s entirely possible given the musicianship and overall writing ability of the band. Oh, and just in case those two new guys look familiar, they&#8217;re vocalist Mike Semesky (ex-<strong>Vestascension</strong>,<strong> Ordinance</strong>,<strong> Rest Among Ruins</strong>) and drummer Alex Rüdinger (ex-<strong>Threat Signal</strong>,<strong> Ordinance</strong>). All aboard the excitebike!</p>

If you pause the video right around 2:36 (good luck), there are a few frames of a board with seven tracks listed. They&#8217;re shortened names of the full songs, but three of them are &#8216;<em>The Escapist Notion</em>,&#8217; &#8216;<em>Pleiadian Keys</em>,&#8217; and &#8216;<em>Esoteric Agenda</em>.&#8217; The other four are &#8216;<em>Disclosure</em>,&#8217; &#8216;<em>Machines</em>,&#8217; &#8216;<em>Vanity</em>&#8216; and &#8216;<em>I TP</em>&#8216; (or &#8216;<em>1 TP</em>&#8216;). If you can properly identify those songs in the comment section below, I will personally reward you by reading your comment. There looks like there&#8217;s more above &#8217;<em>Disclosure,&#8217; </em>so don&#8217;t cry that it&#8217;ll be too short of an album.</p>

<p>Believe it or not, France is steadily becoming a beacon for excellent metal, as evidenced by this year&#8217;s stellar debut releases from <a title="Uneven Structure – Februus" href="http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/2011/10/17/uneven-structure-februus/" target="_blank"><strong>Uneven Structure</strong></a> and <a title="Betraying the Martyrs – Breathe In Life" href="http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/2011/09/19/betraying-the-martyrs-breathe-in-life/" target="_blank"><strong>Betraying The Martyrs</strong></a>, the latter of which are currently embarking on their first ever tour in America, supporting <strong>Born of Osiris</strong>, <strong>Veil of Maya</strong>, and<strong> Carnifex </strong>[<a title="Born Of Osiris, Veil Of Maya, Carnifex, &amp; Betraying The Martyrs — The Discovery Tour. I caught up with Betraying the Martyrs bassist Valentin Hauser for an exclusive interview in which he discusses the origin of the band&#8217;s name and the troubles of getting a European band into America. I also make a fool of myself by pronouncing his name wrong. Luckily, Valentin is a great sport and a friendly dude!</p>
<p><strong>Alright, so for everyone who doesn&#8217;t know, who are you and what do you do?</strong></p>
<p>I am Valentin and I play bass for Betraying the Martyrs.</p>
<p><strong>Oh! &#8220;Valentine!&#8221; I&#8217;ve been pronouncing it like &#8220;Valenteen&#8221; this whole time! [laughs]</strong></p>
<p>Yeah, in French, &#8220;Valenteen&#8221; is a name for a girl&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>Oh!</strong></p>
<p>So please, don&#8217;t do so! [laughs]</p>
<p><strong>I apologize! I am <em>very</em> American&#8230;</strong></p>
<p>No problem!</p>

<p><strong>So this is your first time in America, right?</strong></p>
<p>As a band, yeah.</p>
<p><strong>Oh, so you&#8217;ve been in America before?</strong></p>
<p>Yeah, I spent like a year in California.</p>
<p><strong>Oh yeah? That&#8217;s cool. You had your first show last night, right?</strong></p>
<p>Yep, very first show in Dayton, Ohio, I think.</p>
<p><strong>How did that go?</strong></p>
<p>It went pretty well. We had a major problem with the clicks and samples. It just didn&#8217;t work, but we managed to do the show anyway.</p>
<p><strong>So you guys crashed at Born of Osiris&#8217; house, is that correct?</strong></p>
<p>When we got to Chicago, yeah. We spent like two days there and played yesterday.</p>
<p><strong>So were they good hosts to you guys?</strong></p>
<p>Oh, they were moving houses, so we went to their older house.</p>
<p><strong>Oh, their old house. So they weren&#8217;t there?</strong></p>
<p>They weren&#8217;t there. We just saw them rehearsing, which was kind of amazing. [laughs]</p>
<p><strong>So the band&#8217;s name is &#8220;Betraying the Martyrs.&#8221; What does that mean?</strong></p>
<p>It&#8217;s a name we took because when we made the band, at the beginning, we wanted our band to give a message, you know? We didn&#8217;t want it to be only music.</p>
<p><strong>Yeah.</strong></p>
<p>And we were thinking about all the people who are doing things to make this a better place. They&#8217;re nameless, we don&#8217;t know them, they&#8217;re just working their way to make something good, and every time you do something wrong, you just&#8230; I&#8217;m not very good to explain this in English&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>[laughs]</strong></p>
<p>The fact is, it&#8217;s just a reminder that every time you do something wrong, you just kick someone in the teeth; all those people who try to do good things, like those who help older people, who help the poor, and everything. All those guys. When you do something wrong, you just betray those guys who try to make this world a better place.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<p><strong>So you guys are a Christian metal band. Does everyone in the band practice Christianity or is that just the vocal majority?</strong></p>
<p>I&#8217;m going to tell you something; Christianity is very different in France. You can be Christian and not be &#8220;practicing.&#8221; I don&#8217;t know if that&#8217;s good&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>It&#8217;s much more conservative here.</strong></p>
<p>That&#8217;s it! In France, it&#8217;s like you say &#8220;I&#8217;m Christian. I don&#8217;t go to church, but yeah, I&#8217;m Christian.&#8221; They have no problem with it. So basically we say we&#8217;re &#8220;French Christian.&#8221; [laughs]</p>
<p><strong>[laughs] So what does the writing process look like for you guys? Is it a collective process?</strong></p>
<p>The lyrics or the songs?</p>
<p><strong>Song structure.</strong></p>
<p>Anyway, they both are the same! Everyone works on ideas, riffs, melodies, and then we get together and say<em> &#8220;Oh I got this,&#8221; &#8220;Well, let&#8217;s see&#8230; well it&#8217;s going to work perfectly with this&#8230;&#8221;</em> Everyone works at their home, and we just meet and do songs with everything we have. That&#8217;s the main process. Then after, we do pre-production, which is like a kind of test for our songs, and we say, <em>&#8220;oh, we should add a little bit of this, or take this part away,&#8221;</em> and after, we get a proper song.</p>
<p>We also did like two or three songs on the last album that were composed a long time ago, like right after our first EP. We played those songs a long time live, so we kept changing them for over time to see the audience reaction.</p>
<p><strong>And you&#8217;re in another band as well, right?<br />
</strong></p>
<p>Yeah, <strong>Beyond the Dust</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>How is the work on that going?</strong></p>
<p>Pretty good. We have at least 16 minutes of music, we just have to record it. We just toured in Europe with <strong>Becoming the Archetype</strong> and <strong>Immortal Souls</strong>; it just ended before we got to come over here. I&#8217;m here for a month and the other guys are working on the album right now.</p>
<p><strong>Do you also play bass in that?</strong></p>
<p>Yeah. I just only know how to play bass. [laughs]</p>
<p><strong>[laughs] So you guys are from France. What are some local maybe lesser known bands that you&#8217;re friends with that&#8217;d you like to bring the light onto?</strong></p>
<p>In France, there are some really good bands we know. There are our good friends in <strong>As They Burn</strong>, we&#8217;ve been touring with them for a long time. We&#8217;ve got <strong>Bridal Procession</strong>&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>Oh, I know Bridal Procession, yes!</strong></p>
<p>All those bands, we rehearse at the same place, Checkmate. We&#8217;re all rehearsing in the very same room, so that&#8217;s why we know them very much. Other good bands we have, <strong>Gorod, Gojira, Hacride, Sybreed</strong>. France has, really, lots of good bands. I don&#8217;t know how they just don&#8217;t make it to America.</p>
<p><strong>I&#8217;ve heard of most of those bands though, so I guess they&#8217;re doing a little bit better than you might expect! [laughs]</strong></p>
<p>Yeah, but they don&#8217;t tour over here though.</p>
<p><strong>Ah yes, speaking on that, a lot of people don&#8217;t know what it takes to get a band from Europe to America.</strong></p>
<p>It&#8217;s really difficult. You have to get a visa, and even then&#8230; we went to customs and we had our visa and we spent three hours down there. &#8220;We&#8217;re in a band&#8230;&#8221; &#8220;&#8230;really? Hmmm&#8230; let me see&#8230; you have long hair? Hmmm, let me check your case for any drugs!&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>[laughs] Yeah, they didn&#8217;t let another Sumerian band over&#8230;</strong></p>
<p>Yeah, that was <strong>The HAARP Machine.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Yeah! HAARP Machine.</strong></p>
<p>What it takes is you have to be a full band with a full lineup for at least a year, and you have to give them tons of reviews, interviews&#8230; stuff to prove that you&#8217;re a real band. They say &#8220;this band is okay, this one is not,&#8221; so we&#8217;re really lucky that we got through that process.</p>
<p><strong>Yeah, so a lot of people on Facebook are like &#8220;come to my hometown!&#8221; It&#8217;s not as easy as all that!</strong></p>
<p>First of all you have to have plane tickets, which is very expensive, and then you have all the stories about visas and everything, so I know of French bands who made a tour through the US but when they enter they&#8217;re like, &#8220;Oh, we&#8217;re tourists. We&#8217;re not gonna play at all! Oh, I have my guitar? Huh! It&#8217;s nothing, it&#8217;s for a wedding.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>[laughs] It&#8217;s just completely circumstantial.</strong></p>
<p>Yeah, and they did little tours, but not professional at all. They had to hide all of their dates on MySpace, and just enter secretly. They all have guitars and bass and drums and all that stuff, but they&#8217;re &#8220;not a band.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>[laughs] We like to ask more personal questions to sort of get to know the people behind the band. Obviously, being a band is very expensive and it doesn&#8217;t pay all the bills, so back at home, what do you do to make money?</strong></p>
<p>I&#8217;m a counselor, working in schools and camps with kids. Like &#8220;hey kids, today lets do whatever activities you want&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>That&#8217;s awesome!</strong></p>
<p>That&#8217;s basically what I do. I know Lucas [D'Angelo, guitar --- second to the left, below] is doing some sound engineering stuff. Baptiste [Vigier, guitar --- far left] is a bar tender. Victor [Guillete, vocals/keyboards --- left of center] is giving piano lessons&#8230; so we don&#8217;t live off of our music yet.</p>
<p><strong>Okay, so if you didn&#8217;t do music for a living, what would you aim for your career path to be?</strong></p>
<p>Video games. [laughs]</p>
<p><strong>[laughs] Video games?<br />
</strong></p>
<p>I mean, I&#8217;ve worked in video games. Basically, I did tons of studies working in video games. I&#8217;ve been working there, and it&#8217;s just&#8230; like, you spend 60 hours per week working there, and you don&#8217;t have time for music, so I just left! [laughs]</p>
<p><strong>[laughs] Oh, that&#8217;s awesome! Hey man, it&#8217;s been great. I&#8217;ll let you guys get unpacked and set up!</strong></p>
<p>Oh, thanks man!<strong></strong> Take care. It was nice meeting you. Are you staying for the show tonight?</p>

As a fan of bands like <strong>The Faceless</strong>, The HAARP Machine is right up my alley. They&#8217;ve posted a third studio video, showcasing some bass tracking. That&#8217;s neat and all, but I recently came across this instrumental pre-production track which tickled my fancy quite a bit.</p>
