The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival is probably the biggest commercial metal tour in the United States since its inception in 2008. There was a point in my life when I would have loved the shit out of this tour, but I don’t see much to get excited for as far as my own enjoyment is concerned. Not to talk down on the tour or the bands on it; I’m glad there are more huge metal tours like Mayhem making their way across North America than there were when I was first getting into the genre. Hell, I wouldn’t even mind seeing Slipknot, as they’re a band that really pulled me into more aggressive music. I just can’t help but feel underwhelmed, you know? I’m busy being stoked on the possibility of catching Cannibal Corpse, BTBAM, The Faceless, and more on this year’s Summer Slaughter (which will be announced next week. God, I hope I’m right about that lineup).

But some of you are probably excited for Mayhem Fest, and that’s awesome. This year’s lineup is better than last year’s from where I’m sitting, and features Slipknot, Slayer, Anthrax, The Devil Wears Prada, Asking Alexandria, As I Lay Dying, Whitechapel, and High on Fire. Some of these bands are pretty awesome. Some of them.

After the jump, you can peruse the large list of dates to find your hometown or a city in close proximity!

With all the hustle and bustle about Sweden’s returned punk heroes Refused it’s apt that, on their recent European tour supporting Enter Shikari with Your Demise, American post-hardcore band letlive. saw fit to cover Refused’s track ‘The Deadly Rhythm‘ from The Shape Of Punk To Come when they passed through the Swedish stops of Gothenburg, Stockholm and Malmö, and the ever-vigilant Rock Sound were there to film it! I like, even though it misses some of the nuances of the original — but that’s punk for you; you’re not supposed to do it ‘properly’!

More importantly, frontman Jason Butler cites Refused as one of the reasons they exist, which given the quality of their most recent release Fake History, is something for which to be thankful.

In related news, letlive. will be heading out on the Dead Throne Tour in support of The Devil Wears Prada with Every Time I Die and Oh, Sleeper at the beginning of March, and despite the meh headliner, this is definitely a tour worth turning up for. Details after the jump!

French newcomers Betraying the Martyrs are one of those types of bands that have a sound you can trace back to nearly countless other bands that have taken the spotlight in their respective genres. As their name would lead you to believe, the band have their sound firmly rooted in metalcore and deathcore. However, Betraying the Martyrs aren’t entirely unoriginal. In and of itself, there’s nothing wrong with not trying to re-invent the wheel. Breathe in Life simply makes a dedicated effort to perfect it, and manages to get shockingly close.

There was a time when I couldn’t stand The Devil Wears Prada. For some reason though, I recently stopped giving a shit; probably because I found worse things to direct my rage towards. On top of that, the band have matured over the years, so it’s good to check in every once in a while to see how bands are doing. I just gave the new TDWP album a listen and I must say, it actually isn’t that bad at all. Obvious use of pitch correction aside (it’s supposed to be SUBTLE, people!) a lot of the musicianship was pretty good!

The song that stuck out the most to me was the instrumental track “Kansas” because it’s essentially a post-rock song with more chugs. I can dig it, so you might too if you don’t mind catchy choruses. Stream that thing right here.

Dead Throne is out September 13th on Ferret Records.

Attack Attack! – Attack Attack!

Attack Attack!
Attack Attack!

1. Sexual Man Chocolate
2. Renob, Nevada
3. I Swear I’ll Change
4. Shut Your Mouth
5. A for Andrew
6. Smokahontas
7. AC-130
8. Fumbles O’Brian
9. Turbo Swag
10. Lonely

I’m sure we’re all aware of last year’s shitfest of Attack Attack busting out on the scene. The term crabcore was tossed around a few times and it eventually stuck to bands who use silly choreographed moves and squatting low enough in those skinny jeans to make is sure that they would never have kids in the future. Since their hilariously awful video for “Stick Stickly” appeared, I’m sure they’ve endured their fair share of embarrassment. They’ve lost their vocalist, having their keyboardist step up to the plate as the group write their new album. What will happen? Will they redeem themselves or will they continue on with the crabcore tripe?

Well, upon first listen, I was surprised. They seemed to have stepped up their game, taking on a dark atmospheric turn on the generic metalcore sound, which honestly wasn’t all that bad. Everything has improved on these first few tracks. There are some real riffs here and there, synths are being put to better use in building mood and atmosphere, and vocals are better in the way of Shomo’s screams. Franck’s clean vocals are still clearly processed and pitch-corrected, but they tried to make it less obvious and obnoxious. Through the first three tracks, I must say, I wasn’t having a bad time, as ashamed as I may be. But I’m not going to lie to you people. Track 2, “Renob, Nevada” sounds like a lazier As I Lay Dying without the cool riffs. The Devil Wears Prada, if you will.

To start out, I’d like to introduce myself: my name is Joseph but you can call me Yogg Saron (Yes, that IS a WoW reference) and I am new to Heavy Blog Is Heavy. After Alkahest agreed to have me on here, I got to thinking what would be an appropriate first post to act as a precursor for what’s hopefully a long, joyous time writing for Heavy Blog Is Heavy. Prior to getting on board, I wrote on and off for a site called Press On This (I better get something for this shameless plug), where the focus were the wonderful SC3N3 BANDS LYKE OMG. Getting to the point, I decided to go with a topic that’s been stewing in my head for the last however many years: 5 Motifs of the Industry that NEED TO DIE! (These are in no particular order)

1. The Phrase “Oh!”

We’ve all heard and experienced it’s cheesiness. An exaggerated gasp or growl to accent whatever is going on in the song. Great. Mr. Frontman, you’ve just said absolutely nothing of value. Almost never is the term “Oh!” used in stating a complete thought, even when accompanied by more useless ramblings, such as “Oh the blood, Oh the blood…” (Attack Attack!) or “Oh My God!” (Pretty much everyone else). I, for one did not get into heavy music to be bombarded by a motif that’s just as at home in R&B. It’s just become one of those things added to the equation to get noticed by overweight, multicolored scene kids with unnecessary attitudes. Another variation worth mentioning is the “Come On!”.

I used to be way into this whole melodic death metal/modern metal/metalcore thing. But much like everyone else who’s deep into metal, it got old in a few short years thanks to all the knockoffs and copycats. Scene kids pick up their guitars and play a few Gothenburg riffs and suddenly they’re a metal band (I’m looking at you, Atreyu and The Devil Wears Prada).

Well let’s put these asshats aside and take a look at one of the bands that did that shit well: Soilwork.

Soilwork are currently in the studio recording their upcoming effort The Panic Broadcast, and they’re letting the fans (and the haters for that matter) watch the recording process on UStream. They’ll announce on their Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter when they plan on broadcasting, which will be throughout February and March.

If you missed the first stream, like me (due to lack of interest), then you can watch them on UStream and Youtube. Below is a video from what I assume is cut up from the stream, featuring drum tracking. Even the drumming sounds melodic.

I’ll have to check out The Panic Broadcast. I hope it isn’t as tired and boring as a large majority of this genre has been getting.

According To Our Site Stats…

Our top searches are for the band The Devil Wears Prada. Looks as though there are a bunch of disappointed and pissed off TDWP fans visiting our site.

If you’re one of these people, I welcome you to Heavy Blog Is Heavy. Maybe if you look around, you’ll find something better to listen to!

So Killswitch Engage are going on a headlining tour. Guess who their direct support is?

The Devil Wears Prada.

This isn’t actually surprising in any way. Anyone could have seen this coming. But someone decided to lob a hand grenade into this stagnant pond and now Dark Tranquility are on board.

They left the skinny jeans at home

So, to express my outrage simply, I’ll sum it up it in one sentence:

Melodic Death Metal pioneers Dark Tranquility are opening for Killswitch Engage and The Devil Wears Prada.

Dear God, the booking agency must know absolutely nothing about metal. If this were In Flames, I could see it. But Dark Tranquility? I’m actually surprised they agreed to play before TDWP. Being that they’ve actually stuck to their roots for the most part (Unlike In Flames and Soilwork), Dark Tranquility are still playing Melodic Death Metal. And they’re stuck supporting their directly influenced Killswitch Engage and crap like TDWP.

At the risk of sounding elitist, this makes me rage.

Tour dates for this mixmatch can be found here.
