Hey! Listen to The Family Crest!

Honestly, I can’t believe we’re only just running this post; there’s so much about The Family Crest that has appeal for plenty of people on our staff. Basically, imagine a version of The Dear Hunter that emphasis the orchestral elements of their sound and is also 100% more melodramatic, infectiously optimistic and grandiose. I know, right? But that’s exactly what The Family Crest are and the end result is an album that’s sweepingly beautiful, all grand gestures, big, big lines and the sort of bright outlook on life that’s hard to resist. Head on down below for your first giddy taste!

Release Day Roundup – 12/1/17

Each month, we always seem to come to the same conclusion when it comes to our Editors’ Picks column: Friday release days open the floodgates and unleash a seemingly endless stream of quality new music. But while some of our Editors and Contributors sit down gleefully each week to dive into this newly stocked treasure…

Hey! Listen to Meadowhawks!

Writing about extreme music on the regular, I find my vernacular has shifted to much more, shall we say, BROOTAL fare. Savage this, crushing that, absolute obliteration the other, etc. You’ve read it over and over again, and I most certainly am a constant culprit in this repetitive butchering of…

Come Dream In Static With Earthside’s New Video

Earthside remind us of what finesse in progressive metal looks like. Their 2015 A Dream in Static was a perfect exercise in sincerity and musical integrity, revolving on varied vocal guest spots, sprawling compositions and flawless execution. Needless to say, it’s truly a superb album. Thus, we’ll take any reminder we can get of it, especially if that reminder comes in the form of an astonishingly excellent video from the always excellent Erez Bader (Silent Flight Productions). In charge of excellent music videos for The Dear Hunter (“Gloria”), Thomas Giles (“Devotion”) and Wings Denied (“Catalyst”), Bader is a singular producer in the music video industry (and beyond). Together with Earthside’s powerful lyrics, assisted by one Daniel Tompkins (TesseracT), he has produced a convincing and striking music video, steeped in its own myth and symbolical meaning.

Heavy Blog’s Outliers 2016

Since we publish our individual Top 10 lists right after our main one, you can clearly tell that there are always albums missing for each writer from the general list. We embrace that fault as one of the inevitable limitations of general lists for the collective power such aggregations hold; we wouldn’t give up doing a main list, ever. However, it’s always been a habit of ours to allow each writer to highlight one album from their Top 10 selections that didn’t make the final cut. This allows us more flexibility and the chance to, one last time, shun a light on some of our favorite music from the year. In a fantastic year such as 2016, it’s almost a necessity, as our list, more than ever, misses out on so much of the greatness contained therein.
