Brendon Small is a remarkable fellow. Not only has he enjoyed the success of two animated series on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim (Home Movies and Metalocalypse), but the Berklee graduate is also a gifted musician and standup comic.

Small discusses Metal, why his next television endeavor won’t be animated, acting school, his heroes, and his hopes of returning to standup comedy.

So do you ever plan to revisit standup, and what was that like compared to acting, studying at Berklee, and then today, making cartoons?

It’s funny, ’cause my goals in standup are very specific and small from time to time because I enjoy doing it, I enjoy [it] when new stuff works. I’m kinda using it to develop some ideas right now, but there’s some other stuff that I’m working on. When I go up onstage, when you see me performing, it has nothing to do with the world of Metal, or anything. It’s more just related to my life and my family… it’s kind of almost more… about whatever’s going on in my life at any particular time. But it’s fun, I enjoy it. It’s harder than anything else you’ll do… I just kinda learned how to redo it, relearned the rules or whatever “not to do”. Stupid mistakes people [make] with the audience.

Playing Metal in front of 30,000 people is WAY easier than performing for a small room of 18 people.

Really? The pressure’s that different?

It’s just [that] comedy’s not guaranteed to work. It really is not. When you go see a comedy show, it doesn’t mean it’s gonna be funny. You’re trying something that may not work. When you go and see a Metal show, I can go and rehearse, I can sit with the drummer, I can write some songs, I can put ‘em on a CD, and… I can gauge whether people are enjoying themselves by sales on all that stuff. And then I can go and play them, and chances are good – unless I screw up – that what I give the audience is what they expect, and they’re excited and everything. But that is NOT the case with comedy. I could have a misstep from the very beginning and lose people who are actually fans, by maybe losing confidence in the moment… Even if you do really well at the top of your set, it doesn’t mean that the middle of your set is gonna go well. But you can also potentially get them back again.

Anyway… I’m still very fascinated by it, but you kind of get out of it what you put into it. You have some comics who just want to be standups for a living, then you have people that are gonna utilize it as a tool for writing.

At the end of last week, Every Time I Die and The Damned Things frontman Keith Buckley posted a long and obviously well-considered blog entry onto his website. On January 1st 2012, Keith deleted his Instagram account, and removed the temptation to post to Facebook and Twitter constantly by deleting the apps from his phone (although not deleting the accounts, because that shit is hard to get verified).

The piece itself runs at over four and a half thousand words, but his writing style makes it an easy read, and you should definitely go and check it out. No, seriously.

Tl;dr? Fine. Essentially, he wasn’t liking what he saw from friends and other people who, without these outlets to spew forth their every thought, would keep certain controversial or plain retarded opinions to themselves, and he’d be much more inclined to spend time with them.

So, rather than unfollowing/unfriending, which would undoubtedly cause that frankly bizarre overreaction people have to digital snubs, he has instead opted for a full black-out from social media. His decision is summed up perfectly by this:

“So while it may not be ‘polite’ to remove myself from your inexorable stream of self dick-suckery, if you’re that offended you can bring it up in conversation. Unless we don’t have any, because we’re not really friends.”

And so it is that the era of Josh Netwon, the most stable bass player Buffalo metalcore giants Every Time I Die have had – has ended. Tweeted yesterday, and corroborated by Josh himself, he has stepped down after a four year period, before which they went through bass players every couple of years at least – not to mention touring stand-ins.

I believe he has made this decision in order to spend more time at home, which is fairly admirable. When you get to a certain age I guess that’s what you yearn for, and more power to him. As far as I know he’s still in The Damned Things with Keith Buckley, although I’m fairly sure that’s a very sometimes thing that will only require small amounts of road time for him. The departure is completely amicable, and I guess there’s not much more to say than that! Good luck Josh.

Holy soundtrack Batman! This has kind of crept up on me to be honest, despite my ravening hunger for the new Batman game, Arkham City, but ††† (‘Crosses’ – featuring members of Deftones and Far), The Damned Things, Serj Tankian and Coheed and Cambria amongst others have contributed to the game’s soundtrack, and previews are available over at Amazon. Tracklisting is as follows:

01. “Mercenary” – Panic! At The Disco
02. “Deranged” – Coheed and Cambria
03. “Creature” – The Duke Spirit
04. “Shadow On The Run” – Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
05. “Afterdark” – Blaqk Audio
06. “Oh, Stranger” – The Raveonettes
07. “The Years” - †††
08. “Trophy Widow” – The Damned Things
09. “Drown In You” – Daughtry
10. “Losing You” – The Boxer Rebellion
11. “Total Paranoia” – Serj Tankian

A mixed bag for sure – some of the choices are enough to send the sanest of Gotham’s citizens to Arkham Asylum – but some might just be your cup of poisoned tea.

After the jump we have one of the tracks in full, and some insight into its creation.

The Damned Things? Who would have thought the culmination of members from two metal bands and an alternative rock band would form a supergroup with southern rock-n-roll intentions? Certainly not me. When you have the god that Keith Buckley is on vocals, you would certainly think they’d take a heavier approach. Then again, we wouldn’t want an Every Time I Die 2.0, but I digress. Nevertheless, with such overall quality musicians (yes – even the Fall Out Boy members) you would expect something great. And unfortunately, Ironiclast falls short from the admittedly high standards.

Well hot diggity, you can! Head on over to Ultimate-Guitar.com partner, and…well, I’m sure you can figure it out from there.

The band is formed of two parts Anthrax (meh) and two parts Fall-Out Boy (lol), topped with a Keith Buckley (Every Time I Die)-shaped cherry on top. You probably knew all that, but I have to cater for the two kids from Kentucky or wherever who can’t even remember to tie their own shoelaces.

Despite a rather prolific marketing campaign, the actual release itself has managed to go completely over my head, but I’m 99% sure that now I can listen to the whole albm for free I will do, which obviously means you should too!

We may have a review at some point. We may not. Whatever.

Ironiclast is out this Tuesday 14th December.

I post about this band too much. Whatever.

The Damned Things, a rock-n-roll/southern metal supergroup consisting of Anthrax, Fall Out Boy members and Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die just posted a new music video for their track, “We’ve Got A Situation Here.” Check dis shit out, it’s pretty funny:

The debut album, Ironiclast, drops December 14th. And you can bet your shit I’m excited.

Over at AbsolutePunk you can hear a new The Damned Things track titled “Little Darling” which comes off their debut LP, Ironiclast, on December 14th. Check it out right here.

First impressions seem to be that it’s a little more abstract than what we’ve heard so far, but I can’t imagine there being more than one track similar to this. Still good, though. Lemme know what you guys think.

-MK

Perhaps it’s just my dirty mind, but this gives me the idea that Metalocalypse/Dethklok man Brendan Small is about to get some ho-mo-sec-shul lovin’ from four big and/or hairy dudes plus Keith Buckley – all caught on camera for the new The Damned Things music video. Now I’ve heard of hardcore, but surely this would be the wrong end of the stick, so to speak?

Nah, I keed. The PRP are pretty spot on with their coverage, and I visit most days. Hey, I have to take every ‘lol’ I can get during the work day, right?

Mr. Small will be handling treatment/direction for the upcoming video for ‘We’ve Got A Situation Here’, from the upcoming album Ironiclast, which should be released on December 14th through Island/Def Jam.

The bands debut album “Ironiclast” is currently on track for a December 14th release date through Island/Def Jam.

There’s all the info. I don’t think I need to type it out.

Grab the new song from their Facebook right here. Take a gander at their Myspace for a rough mix of the title track and the finalized version of “We’ve Got A Situation Here” that I forgot to announce. Shame on me!

The Damned Things is a southern metal/rock side project of Every Time I Die, Anthrax and Fall Out Boy. Prepare your anuses.
