The Black Dahlia Murder have been one of the most prominent and loved American death metal bands since the release of their first major record, Unhollowed, back in 2003.  They released Miasma in 2005, a record considered their best work by many of their fans.  After releasing two very successful records after Miasma, entitled Nocturnal and Deflorate, the band has released Ritual. How does it fare, you say?  My answer: it’s the best material they’ve ever recorded, and is sure to overtake Miasma as the favorite of many fans.

STREAM IT! STREAM IT HERE FOR ALL THAT IS (UN)HOLY!

This album is fucking good, and you’ll be doing yourself a service if you do; trust. You’ll need either Windows Media Player or Flip4Mac for Quicktime if you’re super cool like me and like to lick Steve Jobs’ sweaty cornhole on a daily basis. Kind of a dick move, but it’s totally worth it.

If you like what you hear, then it’s, like, totally out on June 21st through Metal Blade! Scandalous.

Today I would like to discuss a recent trend in the field of album artwork as it pertains to metal bands. When you think about the artwork of most metal albums, images of skulls, demons, fire and misogyny spring to mind. Metal is supposed to be evil and the artwork is supposed to reflect that right? In the past this was the case. Cliched imagery, was combined with a mono- or duo-chromatic colour palette to create something dark and unsettling. Blue implies coldness, red symbolizes fire, purple is alien, etc. A combination of sickly green and blue are used to startle and disgust the viewer. Of course there are exceptions to the rule but in the majority of cases, the design and execution of metal album artwork has followed strict, unwritten rules.

But things are different now. Metal musicians can have short hair, merch can be neon, and a genre called djent can exist and be taken seriously. So what does this mean for album artwork? Perhaps you have seen the signs already, noticed the changes, album art is no longer the one colour festival of evil that it used to be. Bands are embracing warm and varied colour palettes, comforting textures, landscape images and even sunshine! Gasp, you say! I’m not just talking about scene golems who have embraced all over print design like your nearest BAPE outlet (LOL at this image). I’m talking about bands that are lauded by critics and recognized as talented and original.

Let’s examine some evidence.

Death metal darlings The Black Dahlia Murder have released another song off their highly-anticipated album, Ritual, entitled “Malenchanments of the Necrosphere”. The song absolutely ignores past TBDM tendencies by ridding themselves of melodious guitar lines and constant blast beat drumming.  This song is a full out aural-assault that is definitely new territory for TBDM fans to travel.  The first half of the song hardly resembles anything that they have ever done, and this revolution is not only needed, but will certainly well-received.  The second half shows the band going back to their melodic side, but bringing 7/8 time into the fold, showing a wonderful progressive side to them.  I think it’s safe to say that, going by what the 3 songs have shown us, that a revolution is at hand at TBDM camp.  And I dare say, it will surpass everything they’ve ever done.

Ritual is released June 21st in North America and June 17/20 in Europe.

After the jump, two tunes released for your listening pleasure.

Alright, so I think I’ve bitched enough about how The Summer Slaughter Tour for the year is a tad bit lackluster. Last year’s lineup was pretty consistent in quality, but this year features more terrible music that I care to drive four hours or more to sit through. Some of you that are luckily enough to not be geographically impaired and happen to really dig The Black Dahlia Murder and don’t care to drive a half hour to see them headline over shitty bands like Oceano. Good for you! Really, I wish I had that luxury, but seeing as how I’m apparently four hours away from any good show, I have to weed out the bullshit. I’m sure I’m not the only one around here that has to do a bit of travel to see shows, so when I talk about tours and such, I’m a bit critical of lineup consistency and such for those in my predicament. So yeah, done with that.

However, a lineup that does feature more consistently great acts is Slaughter Survivors, a collection of bands that were considered for the opening support slot for Summer Slaughter. The bands, for the most part, seem to be conveniently catered specifically for Heavy Blog Is Heavy’s general demographic and readership. The most vocal of you seem to line up with me in taste, so you should dig the lineup:

CONDUCTING FROM THE GRAVE, THE CONTORTIONIST, SCALE THE SUMMIT, RINGS OF SATURN, VOLUMES & STRUCTURES

Now that’s a lineup I’d drive four hours to see, and it looks like I might just be able to! Check out the dates after the jump.

Ritual, The Black Dahlia Murder‘s forthcoming new album, is going to fucking own. Lambgoat have kindly posted a new song from said album, entitled “Conspiring With The Damned”, and from this and the rest of what we’ve heard so far, it’s a definite (r)evolution in their sound, adding multiple genres to their influences. Trust me; you want to hear it.

Ritual is out on Metal Blade on June 21st in North America and June 17th/20th in Europe.

So I decided to do what Dan did on a slow news day. This list is in no particular order. Enjoy.

1) Smaragos – “Furnace

This song is so good.  So many layers happening at the same time makes for a chaotic but memorable experience.  The numerous influences are shown, and that tabla/sitar solo just blows me away.

2) Red Fang – “Wires

I love new music that harkens back to old times.  This huge fest of stoner rock is a perfect example.  The vocalist has such a great voice, and the riff is beyond catchy.  The whole album is this good, so check it out immediately.

As I was eating some cereal and catching up on my most recent Facebook posts this morning I stumbled upon a lovely update from The Black Dahlia Murder displaying a new preorder package. I’m not sure if I missed an update at the mention of them writing new music or not, as I don’t have the time to regularly check a band’s social networking page to see when they’re releasing new music like I used to. Also, I’m sure a few readers could agree that their last release Deflorate was so tasty they could have ran a few more tours off the back of it and their previous work alone. So when I read that they were dropping new music I found myself surprised and very happy all at once.

I love everything in their discography, and I’m guessing this album won’t fail to disappoint either judging by the new tune “Moonlight Equilibrium.” It sounds like everything you would expect from them, with a little more. After hearing the single and gazing in the album art and the box set (which includes a cloth Ouija board, coffin nails, and a sage wand), I dare you not to want to pre-order Ritual. The album drops June 21st on Metal Blade, and you can be sure we’ll have a review for you once we get it. You can find all the pre-order packages and the new single here.

Check out “Moonlight Equilibrium“ below!

You know, back in the day I really used to be into As Blood Runs Black. They were melodic, fast, and had good drumming and moderately interesting vocals and guitar playing. By no means were they the most amazingly mindblowing band out there, but they were pretty listenable. But that was in 2006 when Allegiance came out. Things have changed since then; deathcore has evolved, and people have gotten bored of the whole “melodic riff, followed by breakdown” thing by now. The question is, has As Blood Runs Black changed with the times? Not really. Is that a good thing? Up to you.

[Heavy Blog Is Heavy would like to announce its newest writers, Gunnar (DeusExMachina) and Tim (Amnesian). We've already heard from Tim, who reviewed This Time It's War's Terror Plots. Today, Gunnar talks about how he got into metal. Welcome guys! - JR]

I’ve had a very long road down the path to extremely innovative and unique material. The bands I now enjoy include Periphery, Tesseract, Volumes, The Crinn, Son of Aurelius, Shining, Quartered, Between The Buried and Me, and Arsis. However, without the aforementioned bands, I’d still be listening to terrible rap music like I was back in the early days of my existence.

Finding All That Remains is what I really consider to be the beginning of my metal days. I discovered them when they released The Fall of Ideals, an album I’ve considered seminal ever since its release. That band helped me get into numerous other bands, including another one of my old favorites, The Black Dahlia Murder, whom Shannon Lucas had since left to play drums for. This helped me get into metalcore, death metal, melo-death, and black metal. And from there, it was a chain reaction of sorts. With that came Blackened Death, Grind, Mathcore, Progressive, etc.

Thank god I found these bands before All That Remains released Overcome and …For We Are Many.  Those albums disappointed me so much. But you know what? I bought them, even though I knew that they were not that good. Because you know why? I still support them. Every time I can. For two reasons.

  1. I’m always hoping for a return to form.
  2. Because without them, I wouldn’t be where I am.

And that’s how it should be.
