[Not so fast! We have a late addition to our collection of best-of lists! Contributor J Bobski has given us his rundown of albums from 2011 that (bed)rocked thoroughly rocked his shit! - JR]

A lot of cool, progressive, trendy shit came out this year, but I found myself going back to the basics a bit. I definitely favored the things that never go out of style-fat grooves, killer riffs, and memorable songcraft-over adventurous dorkery this year. A lot of ‘djent’ and ‘prog’ albums that you will no doubt find on many a HBIH writer’s list this year simply didn’t do it for me at all. Admittedly, I probably didn’t spend enough time with some of them, but I did try quite a few of them out. I also love me some black metal and grind, but I was so busy jamming the shit out of the albums on this list that I didn’t have much time to get into any of it. I have some catching up to do, no doubt. But for me, 2011 was all about getting hooked on an album and listening to almost nothing else for days, weeks, and maybe months. I listened to my #1 album so many times it’s a wonder I even had time for 14 other albums to fit on this damn list, ya know? Anyhoo, that’s how I tried to structure this list, by how many times I actually listened to an album (so these are my actual favorites, not what I wish were my favorites or what I think you want my favorites to be) Here we go:

Suicide Silence catch the ire of many a metal fan, myself included. I can’t say I can blame anyone who does on passing, with relentless breakdowns and an annoying birdlike frontman who doesn’t have much of an employment prospect available outside of being a vocalist. Luckily for him, Suicide Silence is doing just fine, and if The Black Crown is any indication, they will continue to be.

It may be nothing new to anyone here that Suicide Silence and their breed of deathcore angst hate is the reincarnation of the pissed off nu-metal sound, but when I saw the lyric video for their new song “Fuck Everything,” it became abundantly clear and official. This is it folks.

The angsty “fuck it all/fuck this world/fuck everything that you stand for” attitude of the 90′s has since gained a heavier musical footing, at least… but to be honest, I’d much rather listen to Slipknot. The song sounds pretty uninspired and the lyrics are pretty awkward in that 8th grade poetry slam sort of way. It’s just so bad in so many ways. I think I’ll go put on Slipknot now and trip on that sweet nostalgia instead.

Suicide Silence’s new album The Black Crown will be out July 12th on Century Media. ‘Yay’.

I’m usually picky about the deathcore bands I listen to. Though I do appreciate it more than my peers at times, most likely because I was there for the birth of the genre. You see if I hadn’t mentioned it prior, I’m from Arizona and I was able to witness the evolution of a band by the name of Job For A Cowboy. I actually saw their CD release party for Doom which featured them as the headlining act with a supporting cast of Suicide Silence (who was touring on their very gritty sounding self-titled EP) and The Faceless (who hadn’t even released Akeldama yet).  I’m one of those guys who hated to see JFAC evolve from deathcore to death metal. As a result, I have a soft spot for the genre.

Though don’t misunderstand me, I still remain critical. I’m not a fan of bands like Atilla or Chelsea Grin. I’m sure most can agree, the genre is over-saturated with terrible acts like the aforementioned bands and Oceano.  When I first heard of Fit For An Autopsy’s debut release I was intrigued as to whether or not this would be one of those terrible acts, or something much better. What I discovered was something in between.

Confrontational headline aside, I don’t have an opinion either way about either of these bands! Sensationalism, I know. Nothing gets hits like enraged music fans. First up, Suicide Silence!

I’ve never enjoyed Suicide Silence in the slightest but then again, I can’t exactly say I hate them for doing what they do. I’d rather exhaust all of my vitriol on bands that, you know, actually deserve it. I’d actually go as far as to say that if you go out of your way to be pissed off at Suicide Silence, you need to get some new hobbies and stop wasting your time. Metalsucks tipped me off this morning that the band has released a new song titled “You Only Live Once.” I gave it the ol’ schoolboy try and gave it a metaphorical spin, and it wasn’t all that bad. In fact, I’d probably have to agree with Axl’s assessment of the track as sounding a bit like Slipknot with more brutal vocals and a handful of chugs thrown in. Growing up listening to Slipknot though, it doesn’t really phase me as much as some. Such is life.

The new Suicide Silence album, The Black Crown, is out July 12th on Century Media Records.

Ammo For Suicide Silence Haters

I don’t usually hate on bands just for the sake of hatin’, especially bands that I actually enjoy (yes, I am among the minority here at HBIH who calls himself a Suicide Silence fan), but I stumbled on  the below video of Krank TV’s ‘Day in the Life of Chris Garza’ and I couldn’t help but post it here:

The thing is just amazingly, awkwardly, hilariously bad the entire way through and bursting at the seams with laughs. Highlights include:

-When the Krank guy asks Garza about his guitar inspirations, he cites Dimebag Darrell, Munky(!), and Jimi Hendrix as his top influences. He goes on to say that “Munky and Jimi Hendrix” are his top two guitarists ever.  Let that sink in for a second. MUNKY…. and Hendrix. Sorry dude, I fully agree with you on Hendrix-I think he’s the best guitarist ever to walk the earth. But putting him in the same breath as Munky?? from Korn?!? I used to be a Korn fan, but come ON.  I don’t even know what else to say about that….

-When Chris is jamming out on some new Krank amp, the interviewer/Krank amp guy tells him his tone is a lot like Dimebag’s used to be. Then, of course, this compells Chris to break out the riff from “Walk”. Ugh, barf….you really telling me that Chris Garza, the rhythm guitarist for one of a million deathcore bands out there,  sounds like the one-in-a-million Dimebag fucking Darrell, dude?

Like THIS guy?!

NOPE. Quit shitting on the legend’s legacy with these comparisons please.

I know it’s Krank’s job to wine, dine, and pretend to worship the artists they are courting. But man, they are so awkwardly and blatantly failing at it that it makes me wonder if filming this shit is doing everyone more harm than good.

Anyway, Suicide Silence’s new album is due out sometime this summer if any of you care.

This totally makes up for the headscratcher I took a look at yesterday. Head of Sumerian Records Ash Avildsen is opening what might just be the coolest record stores ever, SoundCheck Hollywood, on Sunset Blvd. Opening a record store is some risky business these days in a world of digital dominance and music piracy, but I think Ash and his crew can pull this one off. I can admire his ambition; instead of hamfisted attempts to incite an armchair revolution, he’s actually doing something about piracy and the decline of the physical format. Soundcheck Hollywood is right in the middle of the action, situated across the street from the legendary Whiskey A Go-Go. This record store will focus on a more underground rock and metal theme and will feature not only CDs and DVDs, but also limited edition vinyl and exclusive tee-shirts.

On top of that, they’re working to close the gap between the artist and fans by hosting meet and greets that break away from the “stand in line and wait your turn” autograph table sessions in a special “Backstage” area of the store. They plan on making the opening day a big one; The official SoundCheck Hollywood grand opening party will take place on March 23rd and will feature signings from Asking Alexandria, Emmure, Animals As Leaders, The Faceless, Suicide Silence, Winds of Plague and many others.

SoundCheck Hollywood will also be selling new releases Monday nights at 9 PM rather than waiting for the next day. The logic makes sense, considering albums get sold on iTunes at midnight on the east coast. If I lived near this place, you can bet I’d start buying more albums. This is pretty ballsy, and I hope it works out.

[09/14/10 | Metal Blade]

I was skeptical when I first heard of  System Divide. The idea of a female and male vocalist always sounded great, but I had yet to hear a band execute it well. Eyes Set To Kill came close, but their work seems to be hit or miss with me for reasons other than the vocals. Doubtful, I played The Apex Doctrine. Three and a half minutes later I thought “Damn, this is what Lacuna Coil would sound like if they were good.” I immediately bought their EP, The Collapse, and I loved it. I’d spend two hours playing Counter-Strike (Source for those who care) with the same 4 songs on repeat the entire time. With much hype, I was eager to compare and contrast System Divide’s newest release The Conscious Sedation.

System Divide evolved from their EP into what I would describe as a melodic metalcore band. I’ve seen other genres thrown around such as extreme metal, modern metal, etc. Personally, I stand by my description and you can “flame on” a la Human Torch style if you disagree. Different from their EP, the song structure of The Conscious Sedation is more chorus-verse oriented with Miri Milman singing clean choruses and Sven De Caluwe growling through verses. Like most metalcore bands, you can expect plenty of shreds and breakdowns on this album. On this point, the breakdowns do not grow old, sound generic, or drag as in some albums (I’m looking at you Suicide Silence’s No Time To Bleed).

After not having visited the blog for a few days due to some medical hiccups I stumbled upon Jimmy’s post detailing some of the complaints for the blog. One of them being variety of bands discussed at HBIH. I have to agree that what attracted me to this website was a similar interest in the musical genres of heavy music. While most of the music in my collection is under all the similar tags discussed here, some of it is not. Jimmy mentioned finding new writers with different interests to “broaden the spectrum,” but maybe I could encourage some of our current writers to write about bands they may feel would otherwise be considered “guilty pleasures.”

We all have them! With that being said, I’d like to introduce you to The Cover Up.

The Cover Up are a unique band from Arizona, and sadly are no longer in existence. I fell in love with them during their final line-up change, with their last album Monster Eats The Pilot. In their final line-up, I would describe The Cover Up as Pop, Punk, and Post-Hardcore. An odd group of genres indeed, but that’s what attracted me to them at the time. I was quite frankly burnt out on everything else “new” I was interested in at the time; both Suicide Silence’s No Time To Bleed and Killswitch Engage’s self-titled had left me disappointed with much hype for both (the reasons why are worth a whole other column.)
