OMG NEW SON OF AURELIUS HNNNNG

Son of Aurelius may be my favorite tech-death band out right now, having released the absolutely stellar The Farthest Reaches last year.  Now, here at the fourth quarter of 2011, they’ve released this new pre-production track they’ve released via their youtube, and allow me to tell you – nay, show you – that it is magnificent!

It sounds like there are going to be a lot of new elements on the new record based on this pre-pro track. The drums are less crazy, which, in all honesty, is a pretty good thing, considering they were off-the-wall bonkers on Reaches.  I was able to hear some really nice parts, like the super tasteful lead guitar near the end, which shows their emphasis on melody rather than super-tech is retained. The same is also said for Max Zigman’s bass lines, as they are beautiful. This small snippet is enough to make me want this album with relentless anticipation.  We will let you know if there is any more news.

You love Son of Aurelius, right? Of course you do. Well, you’ll be happy to know that Max Zigman and new vocalist for Son of Aurelius Riley McShane has a side project, which is called Smaragos.  Here is some info by the band themselves.

Constructed in the summer of 2010, Smaragos is a two-piece exploration of avant-garde cacophony. Partners in progressive, technical death metal giants Son of Aurelius, project architect Max Zigman and vocalist Riley McShane bring together influences ranging from the heaviest of heavy music to the most sublime of compositions of the last 700 years. Zigman assembles the mixture as both musician and studio engineer with exquisite attention to the details of recording, programming, mixing and mastering. McShane’s vocal stylings help define the musical and lyrical themes of the Smaragos sound.

Most awesome, indeed.  The band also makes use of Ivan Munguia (Brain Drill/Arkaik) for a guitar solo on “Scaphist“, as well as Alan Brown and Michael DeMartino for sitar and tabla solos, respectively, on the track “Furnace“.  You can listen to their self-released self-titled EP via their Bandcamp.  It costs $5 (SHOCKER! Having to pay for EP’s on Bandcamp!), but I assure you that it is well worth it.

You’ve heard about this record for months.  They’ve teased you for so long.  Now you finally have it.  You crack on the record and are greeted by the beautiful acoustic intro.  But wait.  This isn’t your average acoustic intro.  A hint of classically-inspired music is painted upon it.  Then you realize:

AJ Minette is back in The Human Abstract.

Not only March, but April too! The Exodus Of America Tour 2011 has just been unveiled, featuring the progressive and technical likes of Last Chance To Reason, Son Of Aurelius, and Wretched. All three bands are superb, so I would strongly recommend catching this tour if you get the chance. It’s also quite possible that both Last Chance To Reason and Son Of Aurelius will be playing some new songs, so don’t miss the chance to hear them first!

So on top of Son of Aurelius, Sleep Terror, the tech death project of Luke Jaeger, is working on new music too! The source comes from the man behind Amogh Symphony, who will be mixing the record. The post from Facebook is as follows:

Luke (Sleep Terror) is back in action with some new stuff. Stoked to mix this new excellent record. I am sure you guys will be blown away by his octopus finger chops.

I’m excited. Here’s a track from 2006′s Probing Tranquility:

Son of Aurelius are big names ’round these parts, with The Farthest Reaches ending up on two or three best-of lists! I’m not as big of a fan as some of the other writers, but it’s obvious that Son of Aurelius are hard working musicians and are doing very well this early in their career. There’s no doubt in my mind that these guys are going places.

On that note—good news, everyone! It looks like fans of Son of Aurelius won’t have to wait too long for another release, as they’re already working on new music. The band released the short clip below, which teases some new music.

Get excited!

I took a chance when I purchased Son Of Aurelius’ first album The Farthest Reaches. Usually before purchasing any album I guarantee I’ll enjoy it by giving it a pre-listen through research on the internet. Before buying The Farthest Reaches, I had only heard Mercy For Today and knew it fell into the broad genre of death-metal, a genre I’m very picky about. After listening to the album repeatedly for over a week, I can say I’m glad I took that chance; I’m glad I gambled.

Today I was scrolling through my Facebook updates only to find that The Chariot has uploaded a new track titled “The Audience” from their newest record on their Myspace! I was never a fan of The Chariot until I saw their very intense live performance with Norma Jean. Their older work seems to be hit and miss with me, but their most recent album Wars and Rumors of Wars was practically flawless. Their sound evolved to something much more fluid and concrete while maintaining the chaos that they’ve always been known for.

The newest track seems to continue right from where they left off, and that’s a good thing. In addition, they’ve signed to Good Fight Music! This is exciting, as Good Fight Music is a rather new label (compared to Nuclear Blast, Metalblade, Century Media, etc.) that enjoys the company of bands like The Contortionist, Son of Aurelius, and I Am Abomination. Given their latest release, plus the new label signing I’m completely stoked for Long Live, due out on November 23rd!

If you’ve never given The Chariot a chance, give this video a listen and enjoy one of the muddiest head-whipping breakdowns you’ve heard.

This past summer has been full of great tours here in North America, and one of the ones I’ve been most excited for is the Over The Limit Tour. With a fairly solid lineup of mostly techy deathcore bands, with a few exceptions, I was expecting a pretty good show. I’ll go ahead and tell you I was disappointed with what some of them had to offer, but the show only cost me $10 and it was only an hour drive to Ground Zero in Spartanburg SC from where I live so I’m not complaining.

Yesterday, a new Oceano tour was announced in the way of the Over The Limit Tour, in which they co-headline with As Blood Runs Black. Normally when I see headlines such as this in my RSS Feed, I ignore them. But this time, I had to take a look, as Arsonists Get All The GirlsThe Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, and Circle of Contempt are also on the tour. Circle of Contempt are good, but Danza and Arsonists are god-tier in the scene as far as I’m concerned and them touring together is enough for my pants to get a little tight. The fact that they have to open for this shit deathcore band Oceano is proof that there is no justice in this world.

Also in the lineup: Thick as Blood, Burning The Masses, Blindwitness, with Sons of Aurelius and This or the Apocalypse on select dates. I don’t particularly care enough about any of them, but that’s besides the point. Danza and Arsonists are going to be on tour together. Get excited.

Here’s the plan: Show up, see show, leave before Oceano comes on.
