I’ve always been a huge fan of Luke Jaeger’s brainchild Sleep Terror. His brand of instrumental funky shred death is very unique, and his DIY formula is very inspiring. He’s taken the time to do an interview with us, which you can read below. If you somehow haven’t heard of Luke or Sleep Terror, you should definitely check out his material over on Bandcamp!

How and when did you start to play the guitar?

I picked it up at 11 pretty much. I was obsessed with music from an early age and felt it was long overdue to begin even then.

How did you get the idea to create Sleep Terror?

I always wanted to set out and do my own thing. I remember from as early as 12 or 13 writing a lot of my own stuff, recording my own ideas on 4-tracks and crappy cassette players. After many of the influences melded and death metal became a huge staple of my life it pretty much came into place. There was never a specific formula, it was just writing and playing many styles of music that I love and making it one entity.

My favorite oriental-influenced 8 string instrumental one man shred tech death project Sleep Terror have released a new track! It’s called ‘Dual Proprioception‘, and it’s very funky! I love the oriental part in the middle. Classic Sleep Terror. You can listen to the song in the player below, and you can also check the band’s (more like Luke Jaeger’s, because he’s the only man behind Sleep Terror) bandcamp for more songs.

Wow, this year was an amazing year for metal. There were many great technical and progressive albums, which is what I consider to be my ‘main’ genre. A lot of my favorite bands came out with excellent albums, and there were a few surprising newcomers. Some of these I’ve reviewed myself and given a great score, so it won’t be a surprise. Some of these I didn’t have the time to review, which was a shame. Anyway, without further ado, here is my list of top 20 of 2011:

Honorable mentions:

Tre Watson – Gravestones

The reason I’m not giving this an actual rating is because Tre is a close friend of mine, so I can’t be unbiased about this. It’s a really great EP, and especially the last track is a masterpiece. Definitely listen to this.

Substructure – Monolith

These guys just came out of nowhere. They do a great blend of Born of Osiris and The Contortionist, a.k.a progressive spacecore. The reason it’s not in my actual list is because it’s quite short and a bit derivative. It’s still a good listen though.

Empirine – The Great Excursion

These guys perform a technical/progressive death blend of Opeth, Obscura and Cynic. They’re pretty incredible, and we’ve covered them a few times, so you should definitely check them out.

All you crazy artists out there should hop on this! Luke Jaeger, the man behind tech death instrumental project Sleep Terror, is holding a contest to design the artwork for his upcoming album Unihemispheria. The full details from Facebook are as follows:

I am holding a contest for ARTWORK for the new album entitled ‘Unihemispheria’. The recording is finished and currently being mixed/mastered by Vishal Singh. 4-panel Digipack for this one. Winner receives full credit and a couple copies of its release, as well as a free shirt of the cover design when those are pressed. Any questions please contact Luke_Jaeger@hotmail.com . Thanks!

If I had any art skills worth a damn I’d totally do it, especially because the album is going to kick just as much ass as the last one.

So on top of Son of Aurelius, Sleep Terror, the tech death project of Luke Jaeger, is working on new music too! The source comes from the man behind Amogh Symphony, who will be mixing the record. The post from Facebook is as follows:

Luke (Sleep Terror) is back in action with some new stuff. Stoked to mix this new excellent record. I am sure you guys will be blown away by his octopus finger chops.

I’m excited. Here’s a track from 2006′s Probing Tranquility:

Vishal J. Singh has got to be one of the greater unsung guitar virtuosos of our day. I had never heard of him or his project Amogh Symphony until my friend Mark Hawkins started doing acoustic jazz songs with him (alongside Luke Jaeger of Sleep Terror and Hunab Ku fame). Through Mark, I eventually discovered Amogh Symphony, a project fusing progressive and technical metal with several styles of jazz to create something akin to, as Mark described to me, Animals As Leaders on meth. The description isn’t far off at all, as the India-based Amogh Symphony, is heavier and jazzier than Animals as Leaders.

Friend of the site Mark Hawkins (Eating Infinity, Soul Cycle) has uploaded a collaborative acoustic track featuring Luke Jaeger ( ex-Hunab Ku & Sleep Terror) and Vishal J. Singh (Amogh Symphony). The song was produced by Vishal, who plays in the left channel with Mark at the right and Luke at the center.

I know this site’s called “Heavy Blog Is Heavy” and all, but if you can’t appreciate these smooth and sexy tones, then you can rightly go fuck yourself. This is a seriously amazing song, and you should give it a few listens via the SoundCloud player below.

In other Mark Hawkins related news, Soul Cycle, his melodic metal project with Chris Catharsis (who wrote for us that one time), is complete and is about to be released to rock faces the world over. Be sure to check the band’s Facebook for more info as it comes in! After the jump, a sampler from the album!
