I know this is usually done in the form of a countdown list, but I honestly couldn’t really decide on the placement of these albums. And in the end, who am I to say which album is better than another? I’m just an 18 year old kid who listens to music for fun. I love all of this albums, and I appreciate every band on this list, as well as the multitude of other bands that didn’t actually make it on my list. This year was crazy and there could have easily been 30 or 40 other albums on here, but of course time and space are an issue when dealing with writings. Hell, my original drafted featured 20 different albums, and 6000+ words. So thank me for cutting it down. Anyways, without further ramblings on my part, here are some of my favorite albums from 2011.

THE LINEUP CHANGES, THEY ARE DEVASTATING.

Progressive death metallers Obscura, poised to make further breakthrough across the US in support of Children of Bodom, Devin Townsend Project, and Septicflesh, have parted ways with heralded bass virtuoso Jeroen Paul Thesseling. Thesseling’s trademark extended range fretless bass sound has made its mark on Obscura, as well as Pestilence and MaYaN.

Here’s Thesseling’s statement, made via Blabbermouth:

“Due to repetitive conflicting schedules with job related obligations I have decided to depart OBSCURA. Beside the limited availability that kept me away from touring during the last months, I feel like taking new directions in my musical development.

“Looking back, the cooperation with OBSCURA has been positive and successful. However, it’s time to move on and find new challenges and opportunities for my musical career.

“I would like to thank all the fans who supported us and wish OBSCURA all the best with their future work.”

How the band are going to properly replace him is beyond me; dude’s one of the best bassists in death metal and is certainly a tough act to follow. Hopefully the next guy does the band justice.

Xerath‘s debut, aptly titled I, had all the watermarks of a fresh and promising young band. The main idea was on show quite clearly: juddering Meshuggah riffs set against orchestral parts that made even the most grandiose statements by Dimmu Borgir or Emperor seem a little half-hearted – but it all came in a package that was just a little rough around the edges; the vision hadn’t been fully realised yet.

Enter II. This Basingstoke quartet have taken a huge leap forwards in progression from the aforementioned 2009 offering and it shows most prominently in the song composition. I feel bad in admitting that I never thought they could come up with the grooves that end “God Of The Frontlines“or the djent-ish riffs showcased in “Machine Insurgency,” but I am incredibly happy to be proven wrong. On the note of djent, I think it’s fair to say that the sudden rise of the ‘genre’ (I use the term loosely because I know how easily it sets people off) has had an impression on the band. While not adhering to that sound entirely, they stay more true to sound of recent Meshuggah or even Gojira by steering clear of a lot of the pitfalls of the genre such as excessive clean singing and emphasis on melody.

Here is The Devin Townsend Project‘s Deconstruction artwork in all of its high resolution glory! A bit odd, but given the nature of Devin and what’s in store for us based on live footage I shouldn’t have expected anything different! I very much dig it.

Deconstruction, along with the ambient album Ghost, will be released simultaneously on June 20th, both of which being 70 minutes long each. That’s right. 70.

Not only that, Devin & Co. will be embarking on a tour as direct support for Children of Bodom across North America along with Obscura and Septicflesh! This tour is most delicious, and at the very worst case scenerio, you can at least pretend that Devin’s headlining over some top notch death metal before heading home, right?

Tour dates after the jump!

Septicflesh have posted a teaser video for their upcoming album, The Great Mass. It seems their sound will become even darker and heavier, and the addition of an actual orchestra compliments their sound well.

If you haven’t heard it yet, here’s “The Vampire From Nazareth”, a track off of their upcoming album:

The Great Mass is expected to hit stores April 18th on Season of Mist.

New Flier

So basically, Shining are dropped off the tour because of Visa problems in place of some fucking terrible band with the worst name ever called “Lightning Swords of Death”. Awesome, the main attraction dropped off a tour. I don’t know if just Behemoth and Septicflesh are worth it.

Fuck you Kvarforth.
