Hey! Listen to Black Matter Device!

The demise of The Dillinger Escape Plan has left the mathcore mantle vacant. While there are many already established acts jostling for position (see: Sectioned / Fontierer). However, in these turbulent mathematical times, maybe what is most needed  is some new blood. Enter Virginia’s Black Matter Device, and their full-length debut Modern Frenetics, who represent perhaps the strongest unsolicited claim to the title yet.

Frontierer – Unloved

Head for the storm shelters. Anything that is not nailed down will be lost. Anything that can be shaken loose will not be deemed to have been nailed down. Secure your pets, and put Grandma on a long lead. A new Frontierer album, Unloved, is looming on the horizon like…

Heavy Blog’s Top 25 Albums of 2018 (So Far)

Midpoint. Half in, half out. Shadow. A divide. Balance. The semantic milieu surrounding stuff that’s divided 50/50 is incredibly rich; it opens some of the greatest cultural creations of all time (“Midway upon the journey of our life / I found myself within a forest dark” – Dante’s The Inferno) and…

Hey! Listen to The Armed (Again)!

Technically, this post has already been written. No, I don’t mean in the “bruh what if alternate realities are real and in it I am a vegetable of sorts that can talk?” kind of way, it’s just that we already told you to listen to this band in 2011. But a lot of abrasive water has flown under the bridge since then (although we also told you about them in 2015 and at other times) and something seems to be stirring in The Armed’s camp. Namely, the punk/mathcore/hardcore/batshit crazy band have released a new album called ONLY LOVE and you really need to listen to it. Yes, even if you’ve heard this band before. Yes, even if you didn’t like them before. This is a whole new beast.

Each month, we always seem to come to the same conclusion when it comes to our Editors’ Picks column: Friday release days open the floodgates and unleash a seemingly endless stream of quality new music. Sectioned – Annihilated

There are times you just want to listen to music that’s going to decimate your frail mortal shell. There are also times you want music that will dazzle you with technicality, blowing your brain clean out of your dirty mind’s windshield. When you get a wild hair up your ass…

116 – Rivers of Annihilation

This week on Heavy Pod Is Heavy Castm we bring even more extra salt. The news is ripe for it! Well, we also talk about new music and stuff. More of Matt (Trivium) streaming, Trivium’s new live video, and Paolo beefing with Phil Labonte of All That Remains. Then, Chris Barnes of Six Feet Under peddling right wing conspiracy theories. Within the Ruins changing vocalists. But also new music from Dimmu Borgir, Ihsahn, Barren Earth, Rivers of Nihil (love the album!), and Sectioned. Afterwards, we do an extensive segment on the movie adaptation of the Jeff Vandermeer noverl Annihilation, and Eden goes deep. Enjoy!
