Megadeth are arguably the most consistent band in the ‘Big Four’ of thrash metal. While always falling short in terms of recognition and record sales of their mega competitors and career long rivals Metallica, Megadeth have always trumped the aforementioned trainwreck in terms of sheer skill and unwavering faith to their fans and their genre. With really only one blip on their radar to cast a doubtful eye at — the pop ‘sensation’ Risk — Megadeth have crafted a solid lineage for themselves in the metalverse, and since their revival in the early 2000′s have consistently improved and honed their sound and maintained a unique style and presence that outshines all of their Big Four contemporaries.

First off, this won’t be the only Korn post you’ll see today. Entirely coincidental. If you happen to hate them with a passion, we are sorry and I totally get it.

But anyway, as you may know, Korn are doing a collaboration album with various dubstep artists like Skrillex and some other names I’m not familiar with. I’m not all that familiar with dubstep and I certainly wouldn’t call myself a fan, but I was once a huge fan of Korn before I got into metal, so I’m approaching their tenth studio album The Path Of Totality with both anticipation and with a grain of salt. On one hand, I appreciate how every Korn album had its own identity and sounded different from the last; they’ve never made the same album twice regardless of whether they meant to or not. On the other hand, I’ve had a bad taste in my mouth ever since Korn III and have fallen off the wagon a bit over time so I’m not sure if I’m going to like it or not.

I thought “Get Up”, the first single from The Path of Totality, was pretty silly. It has grown on me since then, but I was still unsure if the gimmick was going to work. I did enjoy the aesthetic of the guitar riffs, punchy bass, and the swelling and stabbing synths, but would it translate well over the course of a whole album?

Then today I heard a radio-rip of “Narcissistic Cannibal,” the album’s second single, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It reminded me of Untouchables, one of their best albums. You can give that a listen below.

What I liked about post-Head Korn is that, aside from Korn III, they’ve been pretty experimental and had a touch of industrial to them. This song takes them back on that path, so I’m behind that 100%. I’m still a bit apprehensive about where this album’s going to go, but so far it’s looking better than the last one.

The Path of Totality is due out December 6th on Roadrunner Records.

Machine Head fans rejoice and raise your glasses in the air, for the Bay Area thrashers’ new album Unto The Locust fucking rips. You are going to love it. I can’t help but feel like it doesn’t quite top their 2007 opus The Blackening, but then again how could it? In my opinion The Blackening is one of the very finest heavy metal albums of all time, and there was no way its follow up was going to stand up in my mind. I almost dreaded Unto The Locust’s release as much as anticipated it; mostly for fear that it would be a step backward. Or, in a nightmare scenario, for fear that it would somehow be a steaming pile of garbage.

It’s almost as if Opeth couldn’t let Mastodon get by with yesterday’s bizarre trip of a video for “Curl of the Burl”—NOPE, they had to one-up them in an equally psychedelic fashion, albeit more deep in execution than a hillbilly getting high on DMT and turning into a tree. Their new video for “The Devil’s Orchard” has been premiered by Pitchfork, and you can check that out below:

Obviously 70′s inspired, much like the music. Opeth’s new album Heritage is out now on Roadrunner Records, as if you didn’t already know. If you haven’t, you can also check out my review of the album right here. It’s good stuff!

In the third part of a two-day Mastodon four-fer (ending with Jimmy’s review at 4pm EST), catch the mildly NSFW video for the track “Curl of the Burl” from their forthcoming, just-around-the-corner album The Hunter.

This continues a fine line of videos from Mastodon, which in a world of boring warehouse videos is refreshing. It’s a great track too; I’ve had the chorus stuck in my head for a good few days now, and I hope that most of you will be stoked on the album. I’ve heard some nay-saying, but I think it’s a great record.

The Hunter is out Tuesday next week on Reprise/Warner or Roadrunner (depending on your location). Git some.

Explore Opeth’s Heritage

For anyone who ahsn’t heard it yet, Opeth‘s new album Heritage is now available for streaming over at NPR. I’m pretty sure full album streams are the thing of the future – people want to try before they buy, and this allows them to do just that without torrenting. So no excuses for pirating any more? Perhaps, but I digress.

It takes a not unfamiliar path for Opeth by cutting all death metal-style vocals – they did a similar thing with 2003′s Damnation – but it seems to be pretty divisive. Jimmy already caught a listen and thoroughly enjoyed it (me too), but I guess now it’s up to you to make up your own minds.

Either way, you can get your grubby mits on your own copy come September 20th through Roadrunner Records.

Not two minutes go by since Jimmy posted his Decibel rimjob, extolling the virtues of the new non-death metal album from legendary Swedish death metal band Opeth, when lo and behold a brand new song pops up. God bless you, internets!

We’ve known for a while that Heritage is going to have all clean vocals. Chris Dick’s article confirms that it’s still going to be scarier than finding out the Jabberwocky is your new girlfriend’s dad. We know that it’s going to be in the vein of 70s prog. You’ve heard that, but have you heard this?

Updated: Via The Gauntlet

Ho yes! The 70s influence is obvious. It’s definitely Opeth, but it’s a fresh new take. This version is a radio rip, so the quality might not be the best, but it’s still new Opeth!

It sounds very spacey and awesome – I like the ambience and the progression. Normally I’m a fan of the more brutal side of Opeth, but I can definitely dig this. Now I’m really pumped for Heritage, which will come out 16th September on Roadrunner Records.

Okay, so it’s their new video for “Oildale (Leave Me Alone)”, but there’s some white trash all up in it, surely to piss off the people of Oildale, California.

JD’s bringing back the ADIDAS track suit? Well shit.

Korn‘s upcoming album Korn III: Remember Who You Are is out July 13th on Roadrunner Records.

Gauging the reactions to Korn in the community in the past, chances are, you aren’t.

But if you are, you can head on over to this location and check it out for free until tomorrow. The song is called “Are You Ready To Live?”, which was previously leaked in a video that was erroneously uploaded to Korn‘s YouTube account. This version is actually mixed, so it sounds better. If you hated the song before, however, it’s still the same song. Imagine that.

I used to be a huge Korn fan. These guys helped me get out of pop music and radio rock and set me off in the direction of metal and heavier music. The thought of them returning to their roots this time around was exciting, but sadly, this song falls short of the glory that was their self titled debut. Hopefully the album will offer some gems, but I’m not holding my breath.

Korn’s new album, Korn III: Remember Who You Are comes out July 13th on Roadrunner Records.

Whoever told Munky to put on face paint should be punched in the dick.

In a move that makes the most sense out of any of the news I’ve read today, Blabbermouth reported that Jonathan Davis confirmed rumors that Korn have signed to Roadrunner Records, home to big name metal bands Slipknot, Stone Sour, Soulfly, Killswitch Engage, DevilDriver, Trivium, and more.

Speaking on the move, Jonathan said in an interview with KQXR radio in Boise, Idaho:

“We’re going to be going with Roadrunner, but that’s all so fun. I’m really excited to be doing this because they’re one of the last real record labels left that lets bands do what they want to do. And all the great bands they’ve had on that label… it seems like a good home for us right now.”

Their upcoming album, Korn III – Remember Who You Are is due out this summer. I’ll admit I’m actually kind of excited about this album, as it’s supposed to be a return to the sound of their first couple of albums. And before you judge me and call me out, don’t forget that we were all blasting Korn in the 90′s. Korn was my first stepping stone into the world of metal, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who would be stuck listening to some other garbage if Korn hadn’t come along. I just happen to be more comfortable admitting it, I guess.

So there’s that. Bitch and moan now if you want, but remember, it’s Roadrunner Records. They signed Nickelback.
