There’s no doubt about it; Cynic are absolutely legendary. From their inception, they’ve revolutionized and influenced metal for decades to come. They’re a band that were perhaps ahead of their time when their 1993 debut album Focus was released, injecting spacey progressive rock and jazz fusion into the genre of death metal where such a touch was hard to come by. Their influence has given us bands like The Faceless, Veil of Maya, Textures, and countless others. Thankfully, the current metal scene is more hospitable and receptive of progression, and Cynic are continuing to push their sound into new extremes.

Post-comeback Cynic has so far showed signs of aging, but in a manner similar to that of fine wine. Where Focus had a rough exterior rooted in death metal (fun fact: guitarist/vocalist Paul Masvidal and drummer Sean Reinert spent some time in Death), it was obvious from their return on 2008′s Traced In Air that a much greater emphasis was going to be placed on melody, atmosphere, and much stronger jazz fusion/prog rock leanings. Their latest offering in their Carbon-Based Anatomy EP takes a further step into this territory, bringing some new touches of psychedelia and tribal music with them.

Everyone’s favorite progressive metal/jazz-fusion blend Cynic have just announced that their highly anticipated next release will be coming in just a few short months! The band’s new EP Carbon-Based Anatomy will grace your ears on November 15th at the latest. Here’s a direct copy of the press release:

Forefathers of Progressive Metal CYNIC have recorded a new EP entitled “Carbon-Based Anatomy”, to be released on November 11th in Europe (November 15th in North America). Contrary to last year’s “Re-Traced”, this new EP exclusively consists of brand new material.

Tracklist:

  1. Amidst The Coals
  2. Carbon-Based Anatomy
  3. Bija!
  4. Box Up My Bones
  5. Elves Beam Out
  6. Hieroglyph

The artwork was designed by the great Robert Venosa, the artist behind the cover artworks of “Focus”, “Traced in Air” and “Re-Traced”. We regret to announce that Robert passed away last month. RIP.

Paul Masvidal describes this new EP as “both a philosophical as well as a musical journey, one that begins in the Amazon jungle on the lips of a shamanic wisewoman (as portrayed by [singer/songwriter] Amy Correia) and ends in outerspace”.

Last but not least, the fans will be excited to know that all bass parts on “Carbon-Based Anatomy” were recorded by Mr. Sean Malone.

This sounds awesome. What strikes me as interesting is that Sean Malone has agreed to do the bass parts even though he has left the band and they apparently picked up Ex-The Faceless‘ Brandon Giffin. I sure as hell aint complaining though, because Sean Malone is a stellar player. Is Brandon strictly touring while Sean maintains himself as a session player? We’ll see where this goes!

Hopefully we’ll get a taste of new music shortly. A fix of new Cynic can’t come soon enough!

Hooray! Sort of.

As with a few updates we’ve come across regarding forthcoming albums, it seems like Cynic‘s next album won’t be out until next year, as the writing is taking precedence at the moment. I’m all for this, as it means being able to whittle down the chaff to get a truly great collection of songs, but I know a lot of you will be impatient, considering the last new Cynic material was Traced In Air, released back in November 2008 — at before that was the whole break-up thing.

The following is Paul Masvidal’s update from Cynic’s Facebook page:

Ok friends, You got my attention…here’s an official update. I’ve been working away in the home studio writing lots of new songs and keeping off the grid to stay creatively focused. Apologies for having been a bit reclusive in our digital age of informational abundance! It’s safe to say that Cynic already has plenty of material for a new record, but something keeps the inspiration going to write more. I feel like I’m on for the ride and just seeing what manifests as a result of sitting on the train and looking out the window. As we move further along and closer to ‘destination recording’, the album will start to shape itself and the appropriate songs will be chosen. We’re looking at late summer / early fall to enter the studio. At the moment, I have no idea when the record will be released. Maybe later this year or early next. We’re also in communication with lots of fantastic new musicians who will be involved. I can already sense this next album is going to take our listeners on a whole new sonic adventure that words cannot yet describe. I say this because the work is feeling based and there’s a lot of life poured into these embryos that will speak for themselves when heard. I’m always amazed at how living life informs the art so directly and yet we have no power over it. The songs have a directness and urgency unlike anything we’ve done before due to a bountiful influx of concentrated life experiences. Thank the universe for the gift of music. I am so absolutely grateful to be alive and to be able to share the potency and beauty of music with you. In the meantime keep spreading the love and thank you for taking this journey with us. Oneness…pm

Hippy bullcrap aside, sounds like a lot of work is going into the new album, and I’m sure we’ll bring you any snippets as soon as we hear them!

Imagine Strapping Young Lad and any given Tim Burton movie score. You won’t have to because I know you hit play before you even started reading this. I don’t even know where to begin with this song, as there’s so much going on. Joe Duplantier (Gojira) and Paul Masvidal (Cynic) both contribute vocals, and they sound fantastic. There’s admittedly a TON of hype behind Deconstruction. So far, it’s all been warranted. What you’re hearing above is likely to be not only one of the greatest metal albums of the year, but of the 10′s. I may be getting ahead of myself, but JUST LISTEN TO THIS. FUCK.

The world will get a little brighter when this monster of an album drops June 20th. Gimme gimme.

Oh yes. This news is most excellent.

From Cynic‘s Facebook:

Dear Cynic family,

We’d like to thank you guys for making our first ever US headlining tour a great success and a lot of fun for us personally! Not only did we have a great time performing a set list this extensive, there was also a real family vibe going on behind the scenes between us, our crew and the guys from Intronaut and Dysrhythmia.

As we are wrapping up our touring cycle for Traced In Air and Re-Traced with this successful tour, it’s time to get ready for album number 3! The first baby steps into this gigantic process are being taken right now, creating little embryos of songs that will turn into fully fledged CYNIC tunes over the course of the following months, exciting!

All the best,

CYNIC

I don’t care if it sounds like Focus. I don’t care if it sounds like Re-Traced. Hell, I don’t care if it sounds like Aeon Spoke. This shit can’t be bad.

More word on this as it gets out!

Normally, you won’t catch me running out and getting excited over any sort of remix album. It seems that most of the time, the remixes bear no resemblance to the original song save for maybe a vocal sample cut up here and there for a few seconds so we’ll get the reference. With this in mind, I was skeptic when Cynic first announced their Re-Traced EP. Luckily, the guys in Cynic are smarter than to steer directly into such a pitfall; instead, they chose to think outside of the box and rewrite four songs from their critically acclaimed 2008 album Traced In Air and package it alongside a brand new song. The result of this experiment has been highly anticipated, and their efforts have proved to be satisfying.

ECDEU’s Murmurs: Bromances

gay face

This is my new series of posts as of now as seeing that I wanted a new post. The last series was very random with posting and so this one will hopefully be weekly and consistent. Also, this one has less to do with anything but metal, but will actually deal with metal. So, enjoy!

Yes, welcome to the first post of ECDEU’s Murmur! If you know anything about anything, you know that Cynic is the best thing around right now (or at least that’s what I have been digging on for the past few weeks). If you know that Cynic is the best thing around right now, then you should know the song “Adam’s Murmur”, which by now, I would hope, that you have guessed to be the source for this series’ title. But other than having the common sense to love Cynic, why else name my series after that wonderful song? Well, this starts from a few weeks ago.

At Metalsucks.net, they have been posting a series called Metta Mind Journal, written by the lead singer and guitar player of Cynic, Paul Masvidal. These posts have been amazing. They are truly stepping beyond the normal blog post and stepping into the next genre of writing called novelism (which I totally just made up for the sake of flow). I honestly feel like if he just wrote a book of these little posts, the book would fly off of the shelves. I know I would buy a copy. I actually commented on one of his posts saying that he should write a book and sub-comments reveal that other Metalsuckers believe the same way I do.

Back at the end of February, I pretty much pulled the exact tracklist for Cynic’s Re-Traced out of my ass. How it got up there, I’ll never know. (Actually, it was in the tags for the teaser video on YouTube, so I just put two and two together.)

So at any rate, here’s the tracklist and the artwork for Cynic’s upcoming Re-Traced EP, which includes 4 reinterpretations of songs from 2008′s Traced In Air as well as a new song, “Wheels Within Wheels”, which we heard live before.

1. Space
2. Evolutionary
3. King
4. Integral
5. Wheels Within Wheels

Frontman Paul Masvidal described the sound as “part ‘sci-fi prog folk,’ part psychedelic rock, part minimalist restraint.” This sounds pretty awesome if you ask me. Judge for yourself with this teaser clip they released last month.

Re-Traced is due out May 17th.

Re-Traced, the upcoming Cynic EP, includes 4 reinterpretations of songs from Traced In Air as well as one new song that, according to frontman Paul Masvidal,  “[references] other styles and influences we have in a different context, which is a lot of ambient, shoegaze, and different types of maybe more subtle forms of jazz, drum and bass, and electronic music.”

It’s sounding really awesome so far. I think I see and hear them playing wine glasses in “Integral”. That’s a bit different, and awesome. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the music.

Apparently the tracklist works out to be:

  1. Space
  2. Evolutionary
  3. King
  4. Integral
  5. Wheels Within Wheels

ReTraced comes out May 17th! Mark your calenders.
