Instrumentalists Animals as Leaders have been making waves since their self-titled debut in 2009. Animals as Leaders was critically acclaimed due to mastermind Tosin Abasi’s guitar skills and after filling out the band’s lineup in guitarist Javier Reyes and drummer Navene Koperweis, they toured extensively and wowed prog nerds the world over. Weightless, the band’s sophomore album, is the band’s first group output. Watching Animals as Leaders go from home-produced solo album to world-traveling three-piece has been a treat over the years, and their transformation is realized on Weightless.

Granted, it’s the same song we’ve heard Animals as Leaders play live for the past few years, but it’s nice to finally hear how it’s going to sound on the record. The biggest problem I had with the self-titled release was the awful production. It sounded like cheap plastic in audio form. I’m all for polish, but the tones were just not good. THIS however, is quite good. The production was handled by drummer Navene Koperweis and the mixing was done by guitarist Javier Reyes. Judging by how “Isolated Incidents” sounds, they did an excellent job. Hopefully we can hear some NEW new stuff soon enough!

Their upcoming album Weightless is available for pre-order right now. There’s a whole myriad of options available, including vinyl in blue, clear, and black. Get on that! Weightless is due out November 8th on Prosthetic Records.

If you haven’t heard Fleshwrought‘s debut album Dementia/Dyslexia, then you are missing out on some of the best proggy tech death of the year. I thought it was amazing, and if you have any sense about you, you should at least find it enjoyable to some degree. One of the songs has a (midi?)  saxophone solo, for fuck’s sake. That’s awesome.

So now it looks like the two man project (featuring music by Navene Koperweis of Animosity/Animals As Leaders and vocals by Jonny Davey of Job For A Cowboy) is tossing around the idea of playing some shows, to which I say, “FUCK YES.”

As you can see in the above video, Navene kills it in the guitar parts while drummer Alex Rudinger pounds away, proving that the album was more than just some protools wizardry. This shit can be pulled off spotlessly.

More info to come when there’s something to report. Meanwhile, go listen to Dementia/Dyslexia — out now on Metal Blade — and bask in its glory.

Who would have thought that putting the vocalist of Job For A Cowboy and the drummer from Animosity in a room together and having them write an album would yield results this good?

Fleshwrought, featuring Navene Koperweis of Animosity and Animals as Leaders and Jonny Davy of Job For A Cowboy, have inked a deal with Metal Blade Records, releasing their debut album Dementia/Dyslexia on August 3rd. The music is along the same lines as The Faceless without sounding too similar.

You can get a taste over on their MySpace, where they’re streaming three songs from the album which, once again, comes out on August 3rd on Metal Blade Records. Check it out!
