I’ve been told many times how grindcore is about saying as much as you possibly can in the shortest time possible. In that case, time is very precious in the world of Gridlink as Orphan brings their total discography running time to a mere 24 minutes. To put that more into perspective; Slayer‘s Reign In Blood clocks in at 29 minutes and even World Extermination by Insect Warfare, the more modern classic, hits 22 minutes. So it seems strange that the majority of the songs on Orphan waste their time with a count in, I mean it’s not the most obvious feature of modern grindcore so it does stick out a little bit.

I’ve been going on about Maruta quite a lot lately so it’s about time I got round to reviewing it. There’s no reason for the relative lateness of this review other than the fact that 2011 has produced way too much great music all at once and you can definitely add Forward Into Regression to that ever growing pile.

First impressions with up-tempo music like grind can be very important, it’s very easy to put on an album like this and just allow the ferocious attack to fly casually over your head. One of the best ways to combat that it is to lead with your best or, in other words, open with something completely eye opening and that’s one of the places where Forward Into Regression really shines. If you are in any doubt about whether Maruta is for you then seriously try the first three tracks – they provide a definitive run down of the remaining 24 minutes of the album. That kind of makes it sound like I’m condemning this album to being rather repetitive but, to be honest, are there really that many bands in grindcore that thrive on variation?

New Napalm Death Is ALWAYS News

Sometimes, it takes the old guard to show new bands how it’s really done. So leave it to Napalm Death to basically blow everyone out the water and produce one of the best songs of the year for the Flexi-discs in Decibel magazine. It’s assumed that a new album will be released later this year as the band is set to enter the studio in May, despite the fact they have no label backing after concluding their Century Media contract with 2009′s Time Waits For No Slave. Also, as a bonus; see Napalm Death‘s great performance in the terrible stereotype-enhancing UK teen drama Skins.

Finland is not exactly well known for any particular style, like its more widely known neighbours – I mean just check out the line up for The Finnish Metal Tour. That said, it seems like the music they do produce is a lot like the music that comes out out of the UK. The bands that do make it always seems to have that extra something that makes them stand out compared to their band-per-square-meter brothers; quality over quantity I suppose, and Rotten Sound are clearly quality. This is sleek and yet crusty grind that pays as much attention to Nasum as it does to early Napalm Death.

R.I.P Phil Vane

Extremely shocked by this news as we have lost too many great men in the last few years. At only age 46 Phil Vane, vocalist of grind royalty Extreme Noise Terror, has passed away. Vane fronted ENT on and off since their inception alongside Dean Jones and even had a brief stint in Napalm Death, but I’ll always remember him for his truly huge vocals in early ENT. My thoughts and condolences go to Extreme Noise Terror, his friends and family.

If you like grind then you probably know Jay Randall already, one of the lyrical masterminds behind cybergrind masters Agoraphobic Nosebleed but if you aren’t following his twitter you may not know about his new record label Grindcore Karaoke which releases a lot of grind/powerviolence/cybergrind stuff for free, definately a labour of love.

Honestly, I’ve never heard before of any of the bands he’s released except for Wadge, but the full list is pretty enticing just on names:

  • WadgeGrindcope Lu’au
  • Eustachian - The Sphagnum Bog
  • Chulo - Odio A Primera Vista
  • Marion Barry - Black Power Violence
  • Kusari Gama KillChaos Surge
  • Robocop - Robocop II

With upcoming releases this month from Mechabongzilla, Jet Jaguar KR- 3 Kill Spree, Maruosa (who sound amazingly intense) and Self Deconstruction. So far, Robocop is my personal favourite, I haven’t heard a powerviolence record this interesting in a long time and I think it’s electronic/cybergrind influences that really make the record. Plus, there’s a Napalm Death cover! So if you have an interest in filthy grind or anything of the sort then definately check this stuff out because a) there’s some real gems here and b) IT’S FREE.

Clocking in at just under 14 minutes, the new album by Southern California hardcore band NAILS is nothing short of awesome. Every one of the album’s ten tracks will pummel into you unrelentingly, as good hardcore and grindcore should. The Six Feet Under Records website describes NAILS as sounding like “Entombed covering Napalm Death and Drop Dead“, which is damn near spot on. Interesting enough, the album was recorded at Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou’s Godcity recording studio, with Kurt producing. That should already tell you that this album will be good.

The album opens to immediate chaos and aural violence with the 32 second “Conform”. The term “powerviolence” becomes perfectly clear. Before you even realize that song’s over, you’re under hell-fire with more pummeling blasts, maniacal screams, and grinding and screeching guitars that continue throughout the next three tracks, nonstop. This album doesn’t seem to want to let up.

Amidst the pissed off chants of “Suffering Soul”, NAILS step back from the chaos just a bit and play some hardcore riffs with some slower groove. Nails continues the pace into the title track “Unsilent Death”.

NAILS knows how to make 14 minutes feel like a long time, and they make good use of their time. The songs blend together seamlessly at times, giving the illusion of lasting much longer. Speaking on the album’s structure, I’d believe it if this album was written as one piece of music broken up into tracks.

The album is still pummeling away in fury like a jackhammer. A short guitar solo is thrown out in “No Servant”. Now it’s back to business as usual with “Scapegoat”, which leads into the album’s longest song and closing track “Depths”. The guitars are the main voice here. Layered screeches, noise, and feedback take over a lot of the song, creating the sonic equivalent of disaster. A considerably slower and heavy as fuck riff with proper use of pinch harmonics lead the track to close with a mood if impending doom, ending the album in guitar feedback. What a perfect closer.

NAILS – Unsilent Death is a great grind album. Although short, it does exactly what it’s supposed to. If you’re a fan of Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Napalm Death, and Brutal Truth, you need to check out NAILS right away. You can stream the tracks “Your God” and “Suffering Soul” here, as well as buying the album on preorder.

Grindcore pioneers Napalm Death released their new video for the title track from this year’s album Time Waits For No Slave. The video is pretty kickass. Vocalist Mark “Barney” Greenway had this to say:

“[The video] encompasses all the features of a dour, sterile, product-driven world and the sheer joy of freeing up your mind and appreciating the simplicity of the world evolving around you rather than flogging yourself to death all the time to get ahead. [It was] done in Norwich (Eastern U.K.) with Tom Blyth, who you might not have heard of. But he was in a really old U.K. hardcore band called Goober Patrol. We saw his work and he really seems to understand the art of protest without the cheesiness or cliché.”

The album was released in the U.S. on February 10 on Century Media Records.  Watch the video above and rock the fuck out.

This is probably slightly old, but the offer still stands. Relapse Records is having a sale in honor of Maryland Deathfest 2009 online. All performing Relapse titles are 20% off. That includes Misery Index, Atheist, Brutal Truth, Pig Destroyer, Cephalic Carnage, and more.

All performing non-Relapse titles are 15% off. This includes bands such as General Surgery, Napalm Death, Cattle Decapitation, and Bolt Thrower.

If you actually buy music, you need to hit this offer up.
