I’ve always been a huge fan of Luke Jaeger’s brainchild Sleep Terror. His brand of instrumental funky shred death is very unique, and his DIY formula is very inspiring. He’s taken the time to do an interview with us, which you can read below. If you somehow haven’t heard of Luke or Sleep Terror, you should definitely check out his material over on Bandcamp!

How and when did you start to play the guitar?

I picked it up at 11 pretty much. I was obsessed with music from an early age and felt it was long overdue to begin even then.

How did you get the idea to create Sleep Terror?

I always wanted to set out and do my own thing. I remember from as early as 12 or 13 writing a lot of my own stuff, recording my own ideas on 4-tracks and crappy cassette players. After many of the influences melded and death metal became a huge staple of my life it pretty much came into place. There was never a specific formula, it was just writing and playing many styles of music that I love and making it one entity.

Vishal J. Singh has got to be one of the greater unsung guitar virtuosos of our day. I had never heard of him or his project Amogh Symphony until my friend Mark Hawkins started doing acoustic jazz songs with him (alongside Luke Jaeger of Sleep Terror and Hunab Ku fame). Through Mark, I eventually discovered Amogh Symphony, a project fusing progressive and technical metal with several styles of jazz to create something akin to, as Mark described to me, Animals As Leaders on meth. The description isn’t far off at all, as the India-based Amogh Symphony, is heavier and jazzier than Animals as Leaders.

Friend of the site Mark Hawkins (Eating Infinity, Soul Cycle) has uploaded a collaborative acoustic track featuring Luke Jaeger ( ex-Hunab Ku & Sleep Terror) and Vishal J. Singh (Amogh Symphony). The song was produced by Vishal, who plays in the left channel with Mark at the right and Luke at the center.

I know this site’s called “Heavy Blog Is Heavy” and all, but if you can’t appreciate these smooth and sexy tones, then you can rightly go fuck yourself. This is a seriously amazing song, and you should give it a few listens via the SoundCloud player below.

In other Mark Hawkins related news, Soul Cycle, his melodic metal project with Chris Catharsis (who wrote for us that one time), is complete and is about to be released to rock faces the world over. Be sure to check the band’s Facebook for more info as it comes in! After the jump, a sampler from the album!
