Dark Sermon are a Floridian modern death metal band. Taking inspiration from the likes of The Black Dahlia Murder, later Job For a Cowboy and Behemoth at times, they have a sound that is aggressive and melodic. Those bands are all highly regarded within their own communities, but their brand of metal is done by so many other bands that it can be tiring at times, and finding a good band among those can be quite difficult. Dark Sermon’s debut effort In Tongues is their try at this sort of sound, and it succeeds in some ways, but it also falls into some trappings of the genre.

Rockstar Mayhem Fest 2013

The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival is something I have loved since it started. Each year it brings something for everyone, and I was lucky enough to be there in 2011 for Disturbed‘s last show before their hiatus, Trivium‘s first tour playing stuff from In Waves, Megadeth for obvious reasons, and to even be front row for Machine Head, singing ‘Halo’ in the pouring rain. This year, though, the lineup is sick. Mastodon, Behemoth, Amon Amarth, Machine Head, Job For A Cowboy, Born Of Osiris…it’s so good! Of course there are some bands I have no care for (ahem, Five Finger Death Punch, Motionless In White) but that’s why there’s multiple stages, right? And speaking of, this year there will be not three, but FOUR STAGES. I am revving up my excitebike as we speak. I’m definitely going to find my way to the Tampa date, and hopefully be able to score some sweet interviews while I’m there! You can read the full lineup and dates after the jump.

PromoImageDark Sermon are an up and coming death metal band from Tampa, Florida. Their sound is reminiscent of The Black Dahlia Murder, Job For a Cowboy and Behemoth. Basically, constant heavy fast riffs with some ambience thrown in. Their debut album In Tongues will be released on the 12th of April via Nuclear Blast in Europe, and eOne/GoodFight in the US. That’s some pretty strong backing for a debut album, so what do Dark Sermon actually sound like? Thankfully, they’ve released a video for the title track of their upcoming album. You can check it out below.

If I had my say, there would be a top one hundred list, because I enjoyed so many different albums this year. I’ve changed this list fifty seven times over the past week, so this list is me finally making a decision. It’s honestly been harder choosing this list than it has been choosing classes for next semester. I must say that 2012 has shown that music has not totally gone down the drain, because there are still so many amazing bands I’m just now hearing about, and so many great albums to listen to. So, without further ado, here are the twenty best albums to come out in 2012, and the six best albums that would be twenty one through twenty six that just didn’t make the cut.

I love JFAC, and raved about their latest release earlier this year. I also saw them and met them at Summer Slaughter and they killed it live. The first impression you get of Reading when you visit is that it is essentially ‘miniature London’ — people surge in every direction at once in rush hour and you’re lucky to get a step to yourself on an escalator. The bustling high street was completed by combinations of  pub, Subway and Poundland in a random order and after a good half an hour spent searching for it, it was unsurprising to find the Sub89 nestled cosily above the latter. Alas, my ‘country bumpkin’ was showing but with a whole evening of brutal death metal ahead there wasn’t much room for complaining and my luck would continue, in the form of a broken till when it came time for me to buy my round of drinks.

So with a belly full of free alcohol, we went straight into Scottish brutalisers Cerebral Bore. Ruthless riffs and sickening slams were the name of the game and after run-throughs of tracks like ‘The Bald Cadaver‘ and ‘Maniacal Miscreation‘, it was hard not to be completely mesmerized by the organised carnage taking place on stage. Guitarist Paul McGuire, clad in his traditional Devourment t-shirt, violated every nook and cranny of the fret board and vocalist Som commanded the crowd effortlessly. Cerebral Bore put on a hell of a show, marred only slightly by the standard twat at the back shouting ‘Get your tit’s out!’ after the first track. Yeah buddy, we get it. You haven’t seen a breast since you’ve been old enough to suckle on one. Get the fuck over it.

The audience at Summer Slaughter tour in Tampa were evacuated.

Last night, word came in from across the web that Summer Slaughter’s Tampa show had a bit of a “hiccup,” as it were. During Job For A Cowboy‘s set, someone had apparently threatened to shoot vocalist Jonny Davy. A friend of the site who was there reported back to us with the following information:

Apparently somebody [reported] a gun threat during Job For A Cowboy’s set. They kicked everyone out of the venue for about an hour and searched everyone, and everywhere, in the building. They found nothing, and let everyone back in the show, and everything is all good now. The show is going to continue tonight.

It wasn’t too long after we got the first word that Metal Injection broke the story and had further details:

Security at the venue forced everybody to evacuate in order to re-examine their persons to make sure nobody had any weapons on them. The show is now back to normal, a few hours behind. No weapon was found. In order to make up for the interruption, the venue offered attendees free drinks. Not a bad deal. You can’t blame security for being extra cautious in the wake of the recent movie theater shootings.

Jake Bowen from Periphery also confirmed the gun threat, and posted the following photo of the view outside of the evacuation.

You can probably chalk it up to elitism from an audience member who was making bad jokes. People like this should really stay home and stop making the metal scene look bad because there’s music out there they don’t like. It’s pitiful that this behavior happens.

If anymore important developments happen, we’ll pass word along.

These 30 second samples that sometimes pop up without warning on Amazon are starting to become an interesting way to preview an album, it means that the listener gets the gist of an album and it only really ‘spoils the surprise’ of about a tenth of the material on show. However, you don’t see many labels linking to or making noise about it — maybe they’re not aware when Amazon puts the previews up or would rather link people to full tracks but the news always seems to pop up on a news site instead. This time the honours go to The PRP, who posted about it late last night.

Whitechapel gives off the exact vibe you would expect from the band at this point — the breakdowns are present but, as with a lot of more ‘accepted’ deathcore acts, most of the time they straddle that line between an uptempo breakdown or a slower groovy chug quite proficiently. A lot of the time, it’s hard to tell whether these riffs would be more at home on, say, a Pantera release or an early Job For A Cowboy release. But regardless of the stigma of either style, it definitely sounds like an album worthy of your attention. Also, if you’re in the mood for something a little more substantial, you can hear a new track ‘I, Dementia in it’s entirety over at Loudwire and I’d definitely be interesting in hearing what everyone thinks of it. If it wasn’t for obvious difference in vocals, I’d say some of it sounds like it wouldn’t be out of place in a Slipknot or Devildriver track, take that in whatever way you please but with a pinch of salt is probably the best…

Proving once again they’re not the same band they were when MySpace was relevant, Job For A Cowboy‘s new album Demonocracy ends up kicking all kinds of ass and is an excellent addition to an already amazing year for death metal. Revolver’s got the exclusive stream, so give it a shot if you’re still in the dark about the talents and legitimacy of this band. A year’s highlight for the genre, that’s for sure.

You can still pre-order the album over at this location. It’ll be out next week, April 10th, on Metal Blade Records.
