To anybody who doesn’t know who Jacob Bannon is, he is the lead singer/lyricist/artist of one of, if not the best, hardcore band of all time, Converge. They released an album last year (which was my album of the year) and also did a few festivals and a full-fledged tour. And now we have something else that we can enjoy: a whole documentary about Jacob Bannon, filmed by Ian McFarland.

Being my favorite lyricist and also one of my favorite artists, I think this kicks ass. It’s nice to see people get the recognition that they truly deserve, and it couldn’t have happen to a nicer guy. Anybody that dedicates an album to his dog that passed away deserves all of the medals forever. You can watch the film at Noisey. And if you haven’t yet, (which shouldn’t be the case), go spin All We love We Leave Behind. It’s purely amazing.

It’s easy to peg Long Island Quartet Thracian as a derivative metalcore band, but there is something very captivating about them. Perhaps it’s Mr. Arena’s vocals. The way he trudges through every syllable of the line “I find myself endlessly wading through these waves of repetition” to reflect the meaning of the line is impressive on it’s own but his raspy and raw sound is very evocative. It’s obvious that their vocalist channels Jacob Bannon, but the vocals are unique and that’s not to be taken for granted. Aside from Dan’s stellar vocal approach, the music isn’t half bad either! You might find yourself giving this track it’s fair share of listens. There is much to be enjoyed with some great riffing, intricate drum work and a raw yet crystal clear mix. I find myself remembering a simpler time with this song. When metalcore was fresh and bands like Killswitch Engage and All That Remains sat on the thrones of relevancy. However, Thracian mix things up by putting in an emotional interlude and a solid dose of feels. Give it a spin!

Gears comes out in the coming months so keep up with Thracian on their facebook page and check out their stuff on bandcamp!

Everyones favorite hardcore/metal act Converge, have just made their soon to be skull-crushing full-length album, All We Love We Leave Behind, available for pre-order via Kingsroadmerch, with plenty of bundle packages to choose from, including a limited edition deluxe cd in a hardcover, clothbound book with an embossed silver foil cover. And for you vinyl junkies, a limited edition vinyl is also available on frontman Jacob Bannon’s Deathwish Inc. label. I made sure to snag one of these beauties to call my own before they sell out, which they no doubt will.

The album was recorded and mixed by guitarist Kurt Ballou (who never disappoints), with the rest of the band helping out in other aspects of the production. No fake distortion, no triggered drums, and no outside collaborations, this new album is pure Converge. And after listening to this new song, as well as recently seeing them perform a few of the new tunes live, it’s safe to say that Converge have once again captured their raw/chaotic power, and are prepared to give us what I believe will be one of the best (and my most anticipated) albums of the year. Mark my words.

All We Love We Leave Behind will be unleashed October 9th on Epitaph Records, and be sure to catch them on their upcoming tour. Now sit back and enjoy the video (directed by Max Moore) for the opening track “Aimless Arrow”. Rage!

So Converge have been pretty damn active this year. With a full length in the works, Jacob Bannon’s ambitious art project and some tours/festivals going on this year, it is hard to see these guys slowing down at all – ever (especially because some of them are pushing 40!). So, in an effort to spoil the fans, Converge recently announced a live DVD called Thousands Of Miles Between Us.

The trailer features some very raw footage of the band just going nuts. It also displays Nate Newton’s proficiency as a bassist. I don’t really know what he is doing (or what is going on for that matter), but what I’m hearing sounds about right and as a newcomer to the band, I’m just soaking it all up.

The DVD is supposed to features the band’s endeavors on a global scale, documenting tours from Europe, the US and Japan. Converge frontman Jacob Bannon’s label Deathwish Inc. have also told us that we will get “some sets in their entirety”. Looks like Converge are really outdoing themselves.

We don’t have a release date, but from what I can tell we should be expecting it sometime this year. This is shaping up to be a great year for all of those dedicated Converge fans!

That’s Converge‘s Jacob Bannon making, as my mother would say, “an awful lot of noise.” Yup.

So it looks like the band’s new record – the follow up to 2009′s seminal Axe To Fall – is coming along. If they’re onto vocals then I guess they must be nearly done recording, which is excellent. This would be evident and smart people agree.

Converge have been around for quite a while – twenty-two years now – and even when they make a ‘dud’ it still blows out a lot of other bands, so I’m pretty confident in saying that this one is going to be pretty damn good. When they start cranking out promotional material you will DEFINITELY be hearing about it from us.

We’re expecting a Q3, maybe Q4 release, but it will definitely be affiliated with Deathwish Inc. in some way.

Due to the overwhelming success of Jimmy’s ‘Five Reasons Why Deathcore Isn’t Total Shit‘ series last summer, Heavy Blog Is Heavy will be backing further up the ladder of ‘core’ for the next two weeks, and counting down the five reasons why metalcore isn’t full of shit. It gets a bad rap sometimes, and being the underdog(?) champions that we are, we’re making a stand for the fat kid and suplexing the skinny elitist bully right on his stupid face.

Make sure to throw your $0.02 at me and tell me why I’m completely wrong in the comments section, if you wish. I shall use it to buy soap to wash the spittle from my forehead, safe in the knowledge that I’ll be your boss at the plant some day.

So far…

#5) The Chariot – Long Live

#4) Crydebris – The Severing

#3) Norma Jean - Bless The Martyr And Kiss The Child

#2) Every Time I Die – New Junk Aesthetic

The decision about whether or not to include Converge at all was a tough call. Are they metalcore? Are they not? Well, fuck it: I make the rules, and given the ‘technical’ definition; big metal riffs, hardcore M.O. — rather than the culture of crap now associated with the term — they more than count. They’re just 1000x better than anyone else has the nerve to be. With this cleared up, there was only one position they could take.

As a band they’ve put out a ton of great records, but Jane Doe is fucking bad ass.  It’s just shy of ten years old at the time of writing, but still sounds as fresh as anything put out today. I think this is down to a bunch of reasons: great production; a combination of four great musicians; some killer riffs — but at the end of the day, truly great heavy music doesn’t age, and this really hasn’t.

The discovery of a new band is always exciting. Will it be something you’ve heard countless times? An experience that leaves a bad taste in your mouth? Or is it a treat from which you cannot stop consuming? I wanted to take a trip back in time to reminisce about bands/albums that not only introduced me to heavy music, but kept me coming back for more…

From The Archive: Integrity – To Die For

Integrity - To Die For

One of the earliest bands that helped pave the way for my love of heavier music, was first introduced to me by my brother. I grew up listening to classic rock/metal, but honestly, if it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t have gotten heavily into the hardcore/metal scene. I always found myself listening to the plethora of hardcore and metal bands he had on cassette tapes and CDs, and it wasn’t until my early teens that I started venturing out and making my own purchases. And mmongst the many bands that I’ve accumulated over the years, one of my favorites and still going strong today, has to be Integrity. Recently releasing the sleeper hit The Blackest Curse in 2010, and further solidifying what an amazing band they are, it was their 2003 album, To Die For, that reminded me they were a band not to be forgotten and was a welcome return from this classic group…

Cave Ins - Until Your Heart Stops

Cave In, along with Converge, Integrity, Neurosis and a few other choice bands, set the bar high amongst other hardcore/metal bands I was listening to at that time in my life and in the scene itself. Cave In combined elements of hardcore, space/progessive rock (which became more prominent later on in their career) and alternative metal. Some even lump them in the metalcore genre. They formed in 1995, in Methuen, Massachusetts, and while going through several member changes, they finally solidified their lineup in 1998 with the release of their debut studio-album Until Your Heart Stops.

Deathwish Inc., label of Converge frontman Jacob Bannon, has today posted their 2010 sampler.

It contains a shitload (accurate to the nearest Couric) of tracks (34 to be precise), many of which are previously unreleased, and totals over two hours of music.

Also included are two video trailers: on for Integrity‘s Invocation of the Blackest Curse from The Blackest Curse CD/LP, and one for Converge’s upcoming Thousands of Miles Between Us Live DVD, which I’ve kindly posted below.

Can’t wait for that one.

Shit’s also free. Always good.
