The year 2011 was a fantastic year for music, with many excellent debut albums coming out across the metal spectrum. One breakout act of 2011 is Portland, Maine’s Last Chance To Reason, whose album Level 2 absolutely blew us away. They’re wrapping up a tour alongside Scale The Summit and Protest the Hero at the moment, where I caught up with vocalist Michael Lessard and drummer Evan Sammons in Knoxville, TN to talk about Level 2, their lineup change, Michael’s rugged good looks, and more.

So, first off, I was told by Chris [Disinformasiya] at Heavy Blog to ask why [Michael is] so pretty.

Evan Sammons: [laughs]
Michael Lessard: Why I’m so pretty? I guess I’d have to thank my parents for that one. Just got a fairly decent genetic mix-up.
ES: That’s like asking why Ellen DeGeneres is so pretty, right?
ML: Yeah, I don’t know. It’s one of the mysteries of the world, I guess. [laughs]

Those of you who were with of last year will recall us talking about Minneapolis progressive metal band Iron Thrones on a fairly regular basis. They won Metal Insider and Scion’s 2010 No Label Needed contest, thrusting them into the dingy, single-swinging-bulb-in-a-seedy-backroom-esque limelight of the internet’s metal community, and then released the critically acclaimed EP The Wretched Sun, which was the result of the prize process.

Since last summer things have been pretty quiet. A couple of things have changed; Vocalist Adam Clemans has grown out his hair and beard. Bassist Curtis has cut his and moved to guitar (what is this, Vogue?). They did a couple of tours – one with Last Chance To Reason and another with Hero Destroyed – but fear not; they’re still around, still working, and still kicking all kinds of ass.

Most recently they opened for Cynic and 3 in St. Paul, Minneapolis on their nationwide tour. I’ve heard excellent things about this tour, which for the most part has also included Scale The Summit, who our good friend Quigs of The Number Of The Blog said killed it in Toronto.

Anyway, some splendid person recorded the entirety of Iron Thrones’ set (as well as Cynic’s and 3′s) for our viewing pleasure, and it features a couple of songs each from The Wretched Sun and their first record Visons Of Light.

After the jump, live versions of Cynic’s “Carbon-Based Anatomy” and 3′s “My Divided Falling“, and both sets are available on mplsmetal’s YouTube channel. Both bands are still on tour with three more dates on the west coast of the states, before Cynic head to the other side of the pond to hook up with Britain’s Chimp Spanner and France’s Hypno5e, both of which are fucking awesome bands, so not to be missed.

Whilst we like to think we have all the best ideas, we do like to give credit where credit’s due – and when our bro in metal Quigs from The Number of the Blog told me about this idea, I was pretty excited.

The concept was this: once a month he’ll have four different musicians ‘sitting down’ over Skype to discuss various issues to do with music. Rather than the old blogcasts that tended to get lengthy and we weren’t even sure anyone was listening to them, this has focus, meaning, and a lot of potential.

The first episode was recorded last weekend, and after many mind-boggling hours editing, is now available for your listening pleasure.

The first batch features a couple of Heavy Blog favourites in Justin Gosnell of Vestascension and Steven Henningsgard of Iron Thrones, as well as Sacha Laskow of Enditol, Divinity and Walk As Chaos, and the ever hilarious Brent Petrie, a solo musician with a funny remark for everything.

You can get the inaugural episode from TNOTB right here, and make sure to leave any comments or potential questions for the next batch in their comments section!

Cause, you know, you’re all pale and sit indoors all day and stuff. Oh don’t look at me like that twinkle-toes, you know I’m right!

Far be it from me to break the habit of a lifetime though. In fact, I encourage you to stay, if at least for two more minutes, so you can help out the best unsigned band we’ve heard by miles this year.

Mighty Texan quintet White Arms of Athena are in the running for this month’s Hails and Horns.com‘s Brutally Unsigned Band Contest, which puts them in the running for the following:

ONE BAND WILL WIN: (The band who receives the highest amount of votes)
A full page interview in our magazine, covering your band. We will also stream your newest release (as long as that’s okay with you) and post the interview on our website.

The EIGHT BANDS with the highest votes (not including the winning band) will be featured in our regular Unsigned feature section inside our magazine.

Pretty neat. Whilst not as prestigious as last year’s No Label Needed Contest, which saw Heavy Blog favourites Iron Thrones take the – well, throne, crown, and pointy sceptre of deserved recognition +1 – and this is a great chance for these guys to get some more exposure ahead of the release of their fantastic debut album Astrodrama, which is out at some time soon!

So go and give them a quick boost by voting here – they’re lagging a bit at the moment, but I’ll sexually gratify every last one of you that votes for them. I also hear the rest of the bands on the list destroyed an orphanage and sacrifice kittens to Lady Gaga on a regular basis*, so…you know.

Give them a listen below and prepare your bodies.

* may not actually be true

One of our favourite progressive bands around these parts are Iron Thrones, the Minneapolis four-piece who conquered our hearts firstly with the stunning (and self-produced) Visions of Light, about which Dan reminisced last week, and then blew us away once more with last year’s The Wretched Sun, which I crowned my favourite record of last year. We couldn’t not include these guys, so here’s the opening track from The Wretched Sun, you wretched sons!

From The Archive

The discovery of a new band is always exciting. Will it be something you’ve heard countless times? An experience that leaves a bad taste in your mouth? Or is it a treat from which you cannot stop consuming? I wanted to take a trip back in time to reminisce about bands/albums that not only introduced me to heavy music, but kept me coming back for more…

From The Archive: Iron Thrones – Visions of Light

Iron Thrones - Visions of Light

I have to thank this fine music blog for introducing me to this next band. I was only familiar with their name, nothing more. It wasn’t until news of their new album started populating the blog that I took notice and checked out their debut album, and boy am I glad I did…

Ever in the Christmas spirit, the lovely chaps in Iron Thrones have offered up a live recording of ‘…And The Sky Came Falling Down‘ – the closing track from this year’s stunning The Wretched Sun – tracked on their recent East Coast tour with Hero Destroyed.

You can listen to that shit below, or better – so that they know how much you love them – you can download it, wrap it up, and give it to your media player of choice as an early present. Innat noice? It is free, but there is the option to reciprocate the kind gesture and make a donation, which should help the process of touring and writing new material.

Speaking of which, a super secret source (okay, their Myspace) has told me they are hunkering down against the cold Minnesota winter and doing just that. Huzzah!

It’s not a super Christmassy tune, but it’ll make your chest hairier than Mrs. Claus’s quim. Grrrrrrrrrowler!

People are starting to take this website seriously, and it hit me the other day when I received my very first physical promo package in the mail addressed to “Heavy Blog Is Heavy.” Fuck yeah, things are being addressed to the online entity I built with my opinions. Life is good.

While I was hoping I was finally getting my Iron Thrones promo, I instead received a package featuring two southern rock/metal bands. I was hesitant to try them out, as anything with a southern label affixed to it could be hit or miss. One of the bands in the package, His Name Was Iron, was advertised as “Southern Party Metal.”

“Oh boy,” I thought to myself. This oughtta be good. Turns out, it was! My expectations of a sloppy and drunker Black Label Society came unfounded, as I was instead greeted with southern metalcore akin to Every Time I Day with added hints of Norma Jean, complete with catchier choruses.

[Independent | 07/27/10]

Today I received an urgent telegram from HQ on my telecomputer machine. It urged me to contact General Jimmy post-haste for a briefing on brand new intelligence. Not wanting a stiff reprimand and a week of toilet duties, I reported in immediately. The toilets here are naasty. We’re talking previously undiscovered lifeforms here.

It turned out that, after what seems like a seriously inordinate amount of time, our very own review copy of Iron Thrones‘ new EP The Wretched Sun had landed on the dusty porch at the Heavy Blog trailer whilst I was out scavenging for roadkill. Boy hecky! And I found a racoon! Best day ever.

My instructions were simple: “If you don’t give this 5/5, I will buy a plane ticket to the UK, find your house and do unforgivable things!”

So then! Well done guys, see you for the next album!
