The word ‘underrated’ is probably used way too much these days, it seems that anything less than universal acclaim is undermining a bands talent to their fans. It’s probably fair to say that the skill in new bands has increased, every band is more technical/better at songwriting/straight up weirder than it’s predecessors so it’s probably natural that some guys just miss the hype train in lieu of yet another band who will save deathcore/rejuvenate djent/copy Metallica. While music is incredibly subjective in terms of taste, how often have you stumbled upon a band and just gone ‘Wow, who are these guys and why are they so damn awesome?’ Last.fm is hardly the be all and end all of popularity, but I’d say it’s a pretty good indicator, so here are five bands that are the definition of ‘underrated’:

#1: Lizard Skynard

With a mind blowing 41 listeners(!?) on Last.fm, Lizard Skynard are my favourite secret. Taking influences from all corners of heavy music including grind, hardcore and dissonant rock, they provide some of the most interesting music I’ve heard in the last few years. However, the vocals and lyrics are where the real genius lies. Provided by Erik Sprague, who you may of heard of as the Lizardman, they are mostly a collection of spoken word short stories from some very eclectic characters. Take for instance ‘Space Eels‘, which tells the tale of an insane homeless man who tries to stop an alien invasion by getting passers by to smile, or my personal favourite ‘Normal‘, a story of a police officer so hellbent on keeping the world normal that he begins to break down mentally – it’s made far more poignant when you realise that ‘Normal‘ is being told by a man who literally has the word ‘FREAK’ emblazoned on his chest.  If that at all interests you then head over their homepage where you can stream and buy copies of their 2010 self-titled debut album.

Wolf! The un-google-able band! Seriously though, Legions Of Bastards is an absolute stroke of genius and I’m really looking forward to it. For those who may not have had the pleasure of hearing Wolf before, they play a self attributed style called NWOSHM (New Wave Of Swedish Heavy Metal), which to you and me is just early Iron Maiden that happens to come from Sweden. Genre semantics aside, they never fail to provide an albums worth of metal tunes that are addictively catchy and fun; just check out this hilarious video for I Will Kill Again. My Mum always told me to wear a clean pair of y-fronts and a vest just in case I get captured by a madman with a sieve for a face.

Metal In Movies

Since today seems to be a slow news day, it’s time for…

Metal In Movies

We’ve all had that moment when we’re watching a movie and out of nowhere a familiar song enters the scene that leaves us with our jaw wide open in shock and awe. The last thing any fan of metal is expecting when they’re about to watch a movie (except for horror movies, that’s a given sometimes), is hearing a classic metal tune in a hollywood movie. So, to make my work day go a little bit faster, I’ve been searching around for some movies that feature some metal or extreme music. Here are a few of my favorites, enjoy…

We’ve hit a new milestone here at Heavy Blog Is Heavy. We’ve hit 666 posts!

I’m fully aware that The Number Of The Blog beat us to it months ago even though we’ve been around longer. Shut up. Don’t ruin this for me.

It’s been over a year. It sure took long enough! It’s a shame I’ll be at work all day.

Last Chance To Reason are a Progressive Metal band from Augusta Maine and to say that they are ambitious and creative is a bit of an understatement. They worked with producer Jamie King (Between The Buried And Me, The Human Abstract, For Today) to record their second full-length album which they are calling Level 2, and as if that wasn’t enough, they are also simultaneously developing a video game with the help of indie video game designer Tom Vine. Both the album and the game will share the same name and concept with each other and from what I have seen/heard this multifaceted project is something worth keeping tabs on.

We know that this isn’t the first time that a band has released a video game, (Iron Maiden, Journey) but we can still expect a unique experience from LCTR’s Level 2. You can find two of their songs from Level 2, “Temp Files’” and “Upload Complete” on their myspace page and I am very impressed with both of them. The music makes me think of Periphery or Speak Of The Devil, both of which are very good things. Here is an excerpt from their myspace page so you can get a feel for what LCTR are about:

“Level 2 is a new take on both the concept album and the videogame. It is a melding of both arts into a unified experience. In Level 2 you will battle through fully interactive interpretations of Last Chance to Reason’s futuristic progressive metal. The game/album’s story unfolds through thematic riffs, stirring vocal hooks and progressive virtuosity while the player blasts his way through viscous gameplay inspired by classics such as R-Type, Contra, and Super Metroid. Level 2, a collaboration between LCTR and indie game developer Tom Vine is slated for release in 2010″

I consider Super Metroid to be one of the best video games of all time so it excites me that they cite the game as an inspiration. They also have a pretty sweet teaser video for the album/game:

Pretty awesome stuff. Another thing I like about the band is that on their youtube channel, they like to upload videos explaining sections of their songs, and this proves to be very interesting due to the complex and intricate nature of their music. They also have a blog that they update frequently following the development of the project so that is nice.

Level 2 is set to be released sometime in 2010.

Living legends Iron Maiden have made a new song, “El Dorado”, available for free download! I feel that everyone should enjoy some Iron Maiden from time to time, and the fact that these guys are still going strong after a long and successful career is amazing.

You can grab the song here, but if you want to listen to it without downloading, it has been made available on YouTube.

“El Dorado” is a pretty cool song (although some of the mixing is a bit spotty) and comes from their upcoming album The Final Frontier, which is due out August 16th. The tracklist for the effort is as follows.

1. Satellite 15….The Final Frontier
2. El Dorado
3. Mother Of Mercy
4. Coming Home
5. The Alchemist
6. Isle Of Avalon
7. Starblind
8. The Talisman
9. The Man Who Would Be King
10. When The Wild Wind Blows

So go forth, and get new Maiden.

Comments From Hell (04/11-04/17)

Chris Catharsis brings you the week in review of metal bullshit every Sunday.  All the news you might have missed and whatever else is on the chopping block!

Well here I am – writing my first post for HBIH.  It’s a humbling moment, not unlike my first trike ride or back alley BJ.  I’m no stranger to the metal blogosphere, having been the owner and primary writer for Spine Language for practically a full year now.  Good times were had by all over there.  I interviewed some great bands, had some original concepts, and even started an Internet war with Otep (check that one off the god damn bucket list).  My posting there has been infrequent as of late because it takes a lot of time and effort to make quality content that satisfies my perfectionism, but my partner Dasher is doing a great job of making it seem like I know what I’m doing.

But now it’s time to start a new chapter with HBIH, and it begins with this weekly metal wrap-up column.  I don’t intend to cover absolutely everything, just what I take notice of.  Think of it like the CNN ticker, except with choice comments from the dirty asshole I call a mouth.  The point is to stimulate discussion and catch you up on things you might have missed; we’ll see if either of those objectives are actually fulfilled in the end (my prediction: highly doubtful).

Time (or rather word count) is of the essence – so let’s begin.

I have a pretty deep connection with hippies. Both of my parents were hippies from 60′s and although neither one of them went to Woodstock, they were in the thick of it in their own right. I really enjoy listening to their old stories of smoking weed, having sex, and sweet bands. I was in a rock band cover Cream before Cannibal Corpse had ever touched my ears. I have watched countless documentaries on Woodstock and Altamont. It seemed like the life. Everyday I wonder why I wasn’t born there. Instead I am stuck in a world corrupted with greed, war, and depression. It seems that everything that is this world is everything that was against the world “corrupted” by hippies. So, the first question I want to address is, “What happened?”

Shit yeah. Twelve Iron Maiden tracks will be hitting Rock Band June 9th, including some live tracks from the documentary Flight 666.

The Number of the Beast
Run to the Hills
Can I Play With Madness?
The Clairvoyant
Powerslave
Fear of the Dark (live)

Sweet list. I was hoping for some Wrathchild, but this will do just fine. This means I can get dominated by Run To The Hills on drums again. Oh boy!
