Thanks to Metal Injection for this supreme bit of Photoshop

Seems so – sort of. As I might well have noticed if I’d been able to attend The Faceless‘s undoubtedly face-melting show on Monday night (sadface), vocalist Derek Rydquist was not present in the slightest. Not even his face.

No, it’s fast becoming common knowledge that he has not been with them on their current run of European shows with Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya and Gorod, and instead some other guy has been fronting the band. Metal Injection did a bit of digging around, going straight to the proverbial horse’s face (mouth) and e-mailing him about it, and they came up with this super charged and tasty morsel:

“I don’t think I’m prepared or of liberty to discuss my current involvement in The Faceless, but I think you’re on to something here. I’m definitely not in Europe with them right now, but based on the video I just watched on Metalsucks, the guy they have out there right now is doing an awesome job.”

The guy doesn’t sound downright bitter or anything about it, but there’s definitely something there. I’m pretty sure there’ll be an announcement of some sort very soon, particularly if the band don’t want to receive any bad press over this. I would, anyway, to avoid looking like jerks if more venomous correspondence should arise.

What IS interesting, and I’m not sure if anyone else in the metal blogging community picked up on this, but there was a press release yesterday about a new band called Bewilderbiest featuring Sacha Dunable and Derek Donely of Graviton (Sacha also being of the superb Intronaut), Charles Elliot of Abysmal Dawn…and Derek Rydquist.

My hand immediately snapped to stroke my mighty beard, and an inordinate “hmmmmmmmmm!” didst escape from my mouth. Connected? COULD BE.

COULD BE.

Animals as Leaders have just posted on their Facebook page saying that they will be doing a headlining tour in the US this summer!

Not only that, the other bands involved in the tour will be Dead Letter Circus, Intronaut, and Last Chance to Reason! They also said that there is a “Very Special guest TBA”. More details will follow while your gather your jaw from the floor.

Hey! Listen To Graviton

INTRONAUT SIDE-PROJECT!!!

I feel that was quite important to put out there. Grabbed your collective attention, no? I am feeling super lazy, so here’s the press release:

Graviton features Sacha Dunable of progressive metal heavy-hitters Intronaut and members of the Californian band National Sunday Law.

Massless captures the more melodic moments of Intronaut’s most recent opus Valley Of Smoke with the post-metal and electronic elements of Jesu and the intricate rock styles of Failure and Alice In Chains. In total, Massless is a meticulously crafted masterpiece of ambient electronic fusion, shoegaze and melodic metal.

Intronaut, Jesu, and Alice in Chains. AWSUM. Get on it, kids.

It also looks like they’re fans of the Large Hadron Collider; scientific super-toy and alleged black hole creator, which is alright by us. I’m really liking the tunes, so make sure you check out the three they’ve got on offer so far.

[EDIT - I step away from the plate sick for one day and Metalsucks go and whack the whole album up for streaming. CHEERS VINCE. Gawd.]

Winning s free copy of one of the year’s best releases is as easy as annoying the fuck out of your feline friends. Catstackers.com (yes, this exists) is asking you to (safely!) stack some metal related items on top of your cat and take a picture of it by December 1st. If it’s amusing/metal/cute enough, you win!

Here’s the objective:

Send us your most HEAVY METAL CATSTACK EVER! Stack your cat with whatever says METAL to you. We’ll leave the that up to your interpretation, but be advised that here at Catstackers we listen to metal 24/7, so it would be advisable to impress us with something appropriate!

Read more about this totally awesome contest right here. I wish I had thought of this idea first! Cats are awesome. Metal is awesome. Stacking metal related items on top of cats is so awesome, it’s damn near absurd.

I love the internet.

I’ve just recently gotten into Intronaut, who are putting out their stellar Valley of Smoke next week. I know I absolutely loved the album and Dan (Dormition) gave it a 5/5 rating. It’s one of the year’s highlights, for sure.

Stereogum are streaming a new track off of that album, the very beautiful “Core Relations,” right here. This song marks a more atmospheric and serene version of Intronaut, but the rest of the album has moments of math-sludge aggression. I know I say this a lot, but this is an album you have to hear.

Valley of Smoke is due out next week, October 12th, on Century Media. You can pre-order it here, with this mindblowing two vinyl and t-shirt bundle. I’d get it if I had spare cash on me. Stupid Rock Band 3 pre-order has taken my wallet hostage. GIVE IT BACK.

Post, progressive, sludge, experimental, you name it, LA’s Intronaut have their hands full when it comes to having depth of range in their music. When they released their first EP Null back in 2005, it showcased the band as a progressive metal outfit with a touch of melody and aggression. And speaking of melody, Intronaut do a damn good job of it on their albums, which cannot be said of many bands nowadays. Since then, they’ve released another EP, The Challenger (2007), and two full-length albums, Void (2006) and Prehistoricisms (2008), all of them being powerhouse albums which propelled the band further into the progressive metal genre. Their newest full-length album, Valley of Smoke, which will be released on October 12, 2010 through Century Media Records, is a continuation of their past work, plus a whole lot more.

Valley of Smoke greets your ears with the natural and raw sound of feedback on the opening track “Elegy”, soon after, heavy down-tuned guitars, unusual rhythms and tones, and well-versed vocals take over and immerse the listener in a complete soundscape where everything comes together perfectly. Joe Lester once again shines on bass and makes himself known throughout with crystal clear notes that work well alongside the heavy riffs of Sacha Dunable and Dave Timnick. The deep and strained growls, provided by Sacha, are spread throughout the album and come in when needed and are never overdone, and the jazz influenced style of drummer Danny Walker propels this album to a whole other level.

There’s more to it than that guys. Trust me.

So earlier this week, Alex_P (of The Number Of The Blog) recommended I check out Intronaut. I’ve been meaning to for a while because I keep seeing coverage all over Metalsucks (which features columns by Intronaut’s own Sacha Dunable), but I’ve never gotten around to it. Shame on me, I know. A couple of days later, I’m sent a promo copy of their upcoming album In The Valley Of Smoke. I figure, “hey, here’s my excuse to give them a shot!”

I was blown away by this album. I don’t know many bands that made that strong of a first impression, and I’m told by Gein (who has also heard the album) that it’s not even their best album so far. I’ve got some digging to do! We’ll have a proper review of it up some time before the album drops by the way of Dormition, but I’m digging it really hard right now. It’s worth keeping an eye on if you’re into sludge, prog, and post-metal.

Here’s a recently posted “making of…” video which describes the album’s title track, which features two drums and two basses performing in a call-and-response manner. It’s as awesome as it sounds. Be on the look out for this one.

In The Valley Of Smoke is out October 12th on Century Media. After the jump, listen to the album’s first track “Elegy.”

Oh yes. This news is most excellent.

From Cynic‘s Facebook:

Dear Cynic family,

We’d like to thank you guys for making our first ever US headlining tour a great success and a lot of fun for us personally! Not only did we have a great time performing a set list this extensive, there was also a real family vibe going on behind the scenes between us, our crew and the guys from Intronaut and Dysrhythmia.

As we are wrapping up our touring cycle for Traced In Air and Re-Traced with this successful tour, it’s time to get ready for album number 3! The first baby steps into this gigantic process are being taken right now, creating little embryos of songs that will turn into fully fledged CYNIC tunes over the course of the following months, exciting!

All the best,

CYNIC

I don’t care if it sounds like Focus. I don’t care if it sounds like Re-Traced. Hell, I don’t care if it sounds like Aeon Spoke. This shit can’t be bad.

More word on this as it gets out!

Oh boy! Another great tour that I have no chance of seeing!

Cynic are going to do a trek across the nation late summer with Intronaut and Dysrhythmia for Decibel’s Hall Of Fame Tour: Re-Traced and Re-Focused Live. Hooray for prog!

Cynic will perform Focus in its entirety, along with tracks from Traced In Air. However, Paul makes it seem like they’ll perform both:

Focus will be performed in its entirety from start to finish, along with Traced in Air and beyond. It’s going to be a journey directly into Cynic’s pulsating, vibrant heart.”

Whether it’s just one full album or both, it’s still going to be fucking great. Too bad it’s not coming near me. Same as it ever was. What a bummer.

Here are the dates:

RE-TRACED / RE-FOCUSED TOUR DATES:
