Tag Archive: Immolation

Spawn of Possession may be one of the most overlooked and underrated tech death bands out now—at least from where I’m sitting, where every time I’ve listened to them I had a great experience, but I’ve ultimately been very lazy about these Swedes. I always said that the best time to get into a band you’ve been lazy about is by riding the hype wave surrounding a new release, and while I’m catching up on 2006′s Noctambulant, I’m already excited about their upcoming album Incurso.

Incurso will be Spawn of Possession’s Relapse Records debut, so if there’s anything that will break them out in the metal scene (if they weren’t already), then this is it. The album artwork (above) was done by the much sought-after Par Olofsson, whose work you’ve seen with the likes of The Faceless, Abysmal Dawn, Immolation, and just about every other gorgeous death metal cover you’ve seen in the last five years or so.

Here’s the tracklist:

1. Abodement
2. Where Angels Go Demons Follow
3. Bodiless Sleeper
4. The Evangelist
5. Servitude of Souls
6. Deus Avertat
7. Spiritual Deception
8. No Light Spared
9. Apparition

Incurso is due out March 13th in North America on Relapse Records. Get excited, because unless Necrophagist pulls a miracle and releases their much anticipated new album, this has potential to be the best tech death album all year.

I have absolutely no idea what made Scion (yes, the car company) want to include metal in their audio/visual department, but it has proved to be nothing but spectacular. They’ve worked with such metal artists as Magrudergrind, Wormrot, Enslaved, and most recently, legendary death metallists, Immolation. Immolation is my favorite death metal band of all time, and they have released a video from their EP, Providence, entitled, “Illumination”.

The video is pretty well shot, and shows the band doing what they do best: being a symbol of death metal itself.  The song is brutal and super heavy, and it’s just overall a fun experience.

Their new EP, Providence, is out now on Scion A/V, and is completely free.

Thanks, Scion.  You’re pretty fucking cool.

Watch Immolation Prove Their Dominance

I’m sure if you have a small pulse in the metal music industry, you’ve heard of Immolation.  These legendary death metallers have been cranking out quality album after quality album for 25 years now.  Their most recent album, Majesty and Decay, has to be one of the best death metal releases I’ve heard in quite some time, and to prove it, they’ve released a video in association with Scion A/V for their song, “A Glorious Epoch“.

The video is pretty standard fare, but it greatly fits the aesthetic of the track and is perfectly shot.  Also, the track is amazing, so that makes the video a success, in my opinion.

Majesty and Decay is out on Nuclear Blast, and has been out for more than a year.  If you don’t have it, get it or you’re an idiot.

As you probably know already, New York City has a metric shitload of great heavy bands. See exhibit A (NYC Sucks Vol. 1) and B (NYC Sucks Vol. 2), the highly excellent compilations put together by the mighty Metalsucks.net. If you haven’t downloaded these FREE comps yet, get over there and do so immediately-there is literally not a bad tune in the bunch.

Pyrrhon is one of the bands featured on NYC Sucks Vol. 1, and a damn fine band at that. They recently self-released their first full-length, An Excellent Servant But a Terrible Master. And while it’s probably not for everybody, it is proof positive that Pyrrhon are a force to be reckoned with.

Spanish brutal death metal band Wormed have thrown their new demo/promo CD out on the internet for you to hear. If you are unfamiliar with the band, their style of brutal death is very distinct. The guitar work on the first album Planisphaerium was muddied in the mix, while Phlegeton’s crazy angry frog vocals slurred away against a solid rhythm section. The brutality achieved by the band was purposeful and didn’t feel forced. The debut full length had a few unexpected sections, such as a very post-rock section in the song “Geodesic Dome”. All the riffs were masterfully constructed with a odd timing and sound. This bizarre sound is continued on the demo Quasineutrality with a early Immolation sounding structure. Peep the new songs “Uncolored Plasma Orifices Transported” and “Undeciphering the Inquantificability” on their myspazzzzz.
