I’ve always been a huge fan of Luke Jaeger’s brainchild Sleep Terror. His brand of instrumental funky shred death is very unique, and his DIY formula is very inspiring. He’s taken the time to do an interview with us, which you can read below. If you somehow haven’t heard of Luke or Sleep Terror, you should definitely check out his material over on Bandcamp!

How and when did you start to play the guitar?

I picked it up at 11 pretty much. I was obsessed with music from an early age and felt it was long overdue to begin even then.

How did you get the idea to create Sleep Terror?

I always wanted to set out and do my own thing. I remember from as early as 12 or 13 writing a lot of my own stuff, recording my own ideas on 4-tracks and crappy cassette players. After many of the influences melded and death metal became a huge staple of my life it pretty much came into place. There was never a specific formula, it was just writing and playing many styles of music that I love and making it one entity.

So there is some very weird music in the world.  Hunab Ku and Pin-Up Went Down are two examples of bands that are exceptionally weird, but retain that something that make them undeniably awesome.  Only a few groups can pull it off, and with a couple of listens to CRITICAL.ERROR, you can add The Algorithm to the list.

Vishal J. Singh has got to be one of the greater unsung guitar virtuosos of our day. I had never heard of him or his project Amogh Symphony until my friend Mark Hawkins started doing acoustic jazz songs with him (alongside Luke Jaeger of Sleep Terror and Hunab Ku fame). Through Mark, I eventually discovered Amogh Symphony, a project fusing progressive and technical metal with several styles of jazz to create something akin to, as Mark described to me, Animals As Leaders on meth. The description isn’t far off at all, as the India-based Amogh Symphony, is heavier and jazzier than Animals as Leaders.

Friend of the site Mark Hawkins (Eating Infinity, Soul Cycle) has uploaded a collaborative acoustic track featuring Luke Jaeger ( ex-Hunab Ku & Sleep Terror) and Vishal J. Singh (Amogh Symphony). The song was produced by Vishal, who plays in the left channel with Mark at the right and Luke at the center.

I know this site’s called “Heavy Blog Is Heavy” and all, but if you can’t appreciate these smooth and sexy tones, then you can rightly go fuck yourself. This is a seriously amazing song, and you should give it a few listens via the SoundCloud player below.

Soltando Deseo by ShredMark

In other Mark Hawkins related news, Soul Cycle, his melodic metal project with Chris Catharsis (who wrote for us that one time), is complete and is about to be released to rock faces the world over. Be sure to check the band’s Facebook for more info as it comes in! After the jump, a sampler from the album!

Seattle based avant-garde metallers Hunab Ku are still seeking a guitar player. Apparently the technical prowess of Luke Jaeger has thus far been unchallenged by worthy adversaries. The band has released the following statement:

We’ve been working w guitar player Jamie Lara to take Luke’s place, but unfortunately it hasn’t been working out.  So we are now in the market again for a new guitar player.  If you’re interested please contact us via our myspace, facebook, or email us at hunabku5@yahoo.com.
We have mp3s, tabs, and videos for the songs.  Please only serious inquiries!  Be able to direct us to some of your prior work.  We’re a very active touring band, so if you think you can shred, grab your balls and email us.

I’d hate to see this band go, as they’re pretty fucking awesome. There’s bound to be a guitar player out there somewhere that is available to play some weird-ass metal, and do it well.

Edit: I posted this late last month, but I’m bumping the post, as it is still very much relevant!

Heavy Blog Is Heavy? We should have chosen the name Proggy Blog Is Heavy. It would not only be less redundant, but it’d also be more accurate, considering I choose to cover more artful, progressive bands over traditionally structured bands. I’m a huge fan of bands who aren’t afraid of doing what they want, and I like hearing music that breaks the mold.

Hunab Ku are a band I’ve covered countless (6, actually) times. Each time, I think I’ve made it clear how much this band flat out kills it. Their debut album The Gaze Inward is a strong record which, as I’ve said before, picks up the torch that The Dillinger Escape Plan and Mike Patton lit with their Irony Is A Dead Scene collaboration and sprints with it.

And now, three years later, they release The Rewiring Process, a 4 song EP that features the same technical avant-garde intensity that Hunab Ku has established for themselves. There is a similar mood that flows throughout the EP’s four tracks that tie this strange foray into alien-like weirdness with mathcore intensity together. It is dark, twisted, and schizophrenic.

In between the clusterfuck of barked vocals, mathcore riffs, wacky samples (*boing*), and frantic drumming, you’ll find creepy and haunting vocal melodies and ambient guitar lines. The opening track, “The Other I,” sums up the type of sound you’ll expect througout the EP quite nicely.

Hunab Ku Seeking A Guitarist

Are you really good at guitar and can not only think outside the box, but completely obliterate it? If so, Hunab Ku wants your help.

Their current guitar player Luke Jaeger (2nd to left) is looking to part ways with the band, but instead of being a dick, he will continue to play with the band until a replacement is found, and even going as far as teaching the replacement guitar player how to play the parts, if necessary. How boss of him! If you’re a fan of Hunab Ku and have serious talent and is dedicated to touring and writing crazy music, this is your calling.

They’re taking submissions right now, and will send isolated guitar and drum tracks to those who need them. If you think you can do it, send mp3s or links showing off your skills to hunabku5(at)yahoo(dot)com or via message at their myspace.

Awww shit son. Hunab Ku‘s upcoming EP The Rewiring Process is going to be awesome.

Tracklist:

1 Eat Your Young
2 The Other I
3 Circling The Drain
4 The Ventriloquist

“Eat Your Young” and “The Ventriloquist” can be heard on their myspace page. A promo video that was shot for Brugera Amps featuring “The Other I” can be seen below. That’s 3/4 of the EP right there. Check this madness out if you haven’t already. As far as I can tell, there’s no release date yet. Let me get back to you on that.

Hunab Ku Shows Us The Other I

The extremely experimental Hunab Ku have uploaded a new promotional video for their new song “The Other I” on their MySpace page. Although, the video itself is not an actual music video, but a video from Bugera Amps, whom Hunab Ku have a sponsorship from (hence the closeup of the Bugera logo at the beginning of the video).

If you’ve read this site before, you know that I’m very fond of the Ku. They carry on the Dillinger/Patton torch in mathcore weirdness. Check out the video below and visit them on MySpace.

We've Been Spotted

Woah

So I was recently checking out the Hunab Ku myspace, which features NEW TUNES by the way, when I stumbled upon this quote taken from my review of Hunab Ku’s debut album.

Awesome. We’re apparently worth quoting.
