How am I just now hearing about Corellia? This is right up my alley!

So who are Corellia exactly? Think intensely melodic progressive metal on par with the likes of Haunted Shores, Periphery, and Protest The Hero. If you’re into catchy vocal hooks with your metal, then this is where you should turn your attention to for the time being.

The band just posted a new song called “Glass Faces,” which comes off of their upcoming EP. The vocals might take some getting used to, as I know is the case with Periphery for a lot of you guys, but the 80′s metal sounding melody and delivery in the song’s chorus is too catchy to hate. Unless you’re a bad person, of course.

Their similarities with Periphery don’t end in the music however, as Matt Murphy is producing their EP. This is the same Matt Murphy that produced the vocals for Periphery’s debut. Small world! I’m keeping my eye on this band for sure.

Cyclamen are on the verge of finally releasing their first full length album, Senjyu. Unlike the split EP with Haunted Shores and the Dreamers 2010 Re-release, Senjyu sees Hayato Imanishi once again becoming the sole source of musicianship and artistic direction, as was the case from the very beginning, aside from a few tracks featuring Sky Eats Airplane’s Travis Orbin on drums.

“It has been 2 years since I started working on tracks for this album, when Cyclamen was still my solo project,” says Hayato. “It was so personal that it only made sense for me to write the entire album because I just couldn’t explain emotions I wanted to express in any way other than by music.”

The title Senjyu comes from “Senjyu-Sengen-Kannon (千手千眼観音),” a Japanese God that saves all mankind with its thousand hands and eyes, which is depicted in the album’s artwork (above) and the 500 fan-contributed pairs of hands in the album’s booklet, which still needs your help being finished. The album follows a concept based on a story created by Hayato, with each track representing the different emotions that the album’s protagonist experiences throughout the story.

The album’s artwork is as follows:

1. Mother
2. The Seeker
3. Thirst
4. Hope
5. Comfort
6. With Our Hands
7. Grand Annihilation
8. Devoid
9. Hellrise
10. Revenge (of the Geeks)
11. Senjyu
12. Full Moon Night

This is sure to be a great album, and it’s been a long time coming. I remember getting the friend request on MySpace when Cyclamen was getting off the ground and preparing the release of  Dreamers in late 2008 and early 2009. Now, Senjyu is expected to be out by the end of the year. You can get a taste of the album on Cyclamen’s MySpace, where Hayato has uploaded the new album version of “Revenge (of the Geeks).” It is a good example of the band’s sound, capturing both their aggressive dissonant mathcore and post-rock inspired melodic elements.

A release date has not been announced yet, but as stated before, the album will be out before the year’s over. Just in time to make it onto our best of 2010 list?

It wasn’t that much long ago when Cyclamen was still a one man project straight out of Hayato Imanishi’s bedroom (so to speak). Now with a full lineup, two EPs, and their first live gig under their belts, the new members are settling in quite nicely.

I recently spoke with new guitarist Olly Steele to find out what he’s been up to in the band.

So how’s everything going?

Yeah, wicked man. I’m just writing a lot at the moment, for Cyclamen of course… that’s it! I don’t do much except guitar.

That’s cool. I can’t wait to hear what you come up with!

And boy, how I can’t wait to share it with the people!

Is Cyclamen your first band?

Yeah, man!

That’s cool. Good way to start!

Aye!

How much material is written for the upcoming album?

Well, it depends. Like, we don’t wanna do a Periphery and have all our stuff known before it gets released. Fuck that. So… three new songs, and I’m sure one or two will make it on the album out of the ready known songs. So I dunno really, but me and Nano [Sigo, guitar] have written three new ones. Sorry, bit of a shitty answer!

Cyclamen – Dreamers 2010

Cyclamen

Dreamers 2010

1. Never Ending Dream
2. Djent! Djent!
3. Forgotten Sky
*4. Princess Mononoke*

As I’m sure I’ve mentioned countless times, we here at HBIH enjoy us some Cyclamen and their blend of mathy djent and melodicism. Cyclamen’s first ever release, Dreamers, is a three song EP written, recorded, programmed, and produced by front man Hayato Imanishi. That EP was a great introduction into the band’s sound and was a sign of good things to come. Now, a year and a half later in the wake of a new full lineup and a stellar Split EP with Haunted Shores, Cyclamen are releasing a re-recorded version, featuring new guitarists Olly Steele and Nano Sigo and drumming by Sky Eats Airplane‘s Travis Orbin. The addition of these new musicians into the fold really breathes new life into these songs.

Back in December, Cyclamen went to Wellerhill Studio in London to record two new tracks for their upcoming split EP with Haunted Shores. We’ve already witnessed drum and guitar tracking, but this time we get to catch some of that low end with Hayato tracking bass (which I DO happen to care about) on day 5 of the recording sessions. On day 6, he lays down some vocals.

The Haunted Shores/Cyclamen Split EP is due out soon. You can pre-order the EP here. If you pre-order it through Cyclamen, you get a poster of the artwork, which is pretty boss. By the way, have you checked out our review of it yet?

Cyclamen have just posted a second studio video, documenting their visit to Wellerhill Studios in London back in December to record the tracks for the upcoming split with Haunted Shores (which we reviewed a couple of weeks ago).

Days 1 & 2: Drum tracking with Boris le Gal.

Days 3 & 4: Olly tracks guitars.

Worth a watch for the lolz. I’ve never seen Olly play before, but the guy is a tight player. Looking forward to seeing them live at the end of the month for their first ever gig.

Writing for the best heavy music website in the world* has its advantages. We all do this for the love of it alone, but every once in a while some fearless band will brave our gnarly jaws of scathing death and offer us their music to review. For free. This is seven shades of awesome (and we’d love to do it more often – see the contact page for details!), and much more likely to make us say nice things. Probably.

The most recent of these occurences was in relation to the upcoming Cyclamen/Haunted Shores Split EP. Two tracks each, fifteen minutes total: let’s go.

So a few weeks ago or whatever, Periphery announced the departure of singer Chris Baretto and the inclusion of new singer Spencer Sotelo. Well, yesterday, Haunted Shores, one of Periphery guitarist Misha “Bulb” Monsoor‘s music projects, announced that Chris Baretto will be handling vocal duties. Wut?

Chris and Haunted Shores guitarist Mark Holcomb

Well that’s weird. Clearly, Misha and Chris are still friends and want to work together, but randomly taking Chris out of Periphery and now him joining Haunted Shores? I wonder how that conversation went down.

“Hey bro, you’re a great singer and all…”
“Yeah?”
“We’re bros and shit, but… like… we found a better singer.”
“WAT”
“I know, I know… but this is our label debut and we want to make it sound as good as possible.”
“I don’t even.”
“Oh don’t worry, bro. Come over and hang out with us at Haunted Shores.”
“Well that’s kinda pointless. Why couldn’t you just put the new guy over there?”
“That’s not confusing enough.”

Yeah. That likely happened.

Anyway, the new Haunted Shores track “When In Oslo”, featuring Baretto on vocals, sounds great. Go listen to it on the HS Myspace. This is gonna be good.

Carving out a niche of their own in a genre filled with Meshuggah clones, London based experi-metal group Cyclamen is making a name for themselves with a fanbase growing by the day. Cyclamen boasts a repertoire featuring both mathcore chaos and technical aggression to the seemingly polar opposite with post-rock atmospheres and calming beauty in a genre I like to call post-djent.

I swapped emails with Cyclamen mastermind Hayato Imanishi for Heavy Blog Is Heavy’s first ever interview to gain some insight to the world of Cyclamen.

A quick Google search for Cyclamen leads one to find out that a Cyclamen is a flower. What inspired you to name your project after a flower?

Cyclamen is pronounced “Shikuramen” in Japanese, and since “Shi” means death and “Ku” means suffer in Japanese, so even though it’s a pretty flower it’s a taboo to give it in some occasion, like to people who are in a hospital. Also its “Hanakotoba” (translates to “flower word” – In Japanese culture, pretty much every flower has some sort of meaning and it’s important to know the meaning when you are giving flowers to someone) changes according to its colour. Red means “Envy”, white means “Innocence”, for instance.
I thought Cyclamen was fitting name because my music isn’t restricted in one genre – it could be aggressive (e.g. Revenge of the Geeks) or beautiful (e.g. Senjyu) or both in one song (e.g. Never Ending Dream) depending on what songs need to express certain emotion I am aiming to translate via music.

I remember reading on the Cyclamen MySpace a while back that Cyclamen basically started out because you missed your favorite band, Sikth, and wanted to write music in the same vein as them. In light of this, getting the attention of [Sikth vocalist] Mikee Goodman must have been a surreal experience for you, to say the least. How did this collaboration come about and how did it go down?

It was very valuable experience to work with such an awesome and creative vocalist, but since we both are perfectionists we ended up exchanging mails for about 3 months until the final version was made! He was very open to my opinion and understood what I wanted – Awesome guy all around and was real pleasure to work with him. Everyone should check out his new band The Painted Smile, it’s very different from SikTh but still very exciting : )

Sleep-Street.mp3

As time moved on, Cyclamen started to sound less like Sikth and started sounding more like its own thing. Was this a conscious decision or was it just an organic change that happened as writing progressed?

It may sound selfish, but I always write music just for myself. At that time I really needed SikTh-esque tech metal, but right now I am enjoying more post-rock (MONO, This Will Destroy You) and pop (The Ting Tings, B’z (Japanese rock duo)) so that probably reflects to what I write. I am sure once I get enough of these music I will write songs with different influences. But I think there is always certain Cyclamen sound that stays in every song I write – And I always make sure they are good songs obviously haha
