GAZA Is No Longer A Band

 GAZA

These are the last words coming from the band as they say good-bye to us all. Salt Lake City’s GAZA has disbanded according to a status update on their Facebook page. All the status said was the following:

Gaza is no longer a band. A big thank you to anyone that has supported us. Some of us will continue to make music together.

Yes, that was it. No explanations. Nothing. We still have to wait for an official press release (that is, if there’ll be one) to make any sense of why a band at their peak, would quit for no reason. Hopefully, it has nothing to do with the horrible rape accusation against vocalist Jon Parkin by a certain anonymous woman who wrote a very long tumblr post stating how the 6-foot tall vocalist had forced himself on to her. Jon later made a public announcement saying the accusation was false, but there will always be speculation.

Call of the VoidCall Of The Void – Dragged Down A Dead End Path

[03/19/13]
[Relapse Records]

As fascinating and as forward-thinking the metal world is a lot of the time, sometimes it’s hard to beat a combination of infectious energy and rough cut riffs. Call Of The Void embody that statement shamelessly and their debut record Dragged Down A Dead End Path finds the band refining and honing those ideals with some impressive results. The basic gist of their sound takes the head-moving underlying groove of Trap Them and stirs in a lethal dose of the grinding car-crash that is Gaza. Through the entire duration of Dragged Down… you’re subjected to a selection of headstrong riffs, that are more concerned with blunt force than any real finesse or subtlety, d-beats and gruff vocals in two distinct ways; tracks like ‘Napalm Lungs‘ and ‘The Liar’s Heart‘ take the direct grind route and, on the other hand, ‘Endless Ritual Abuse‘ and the brilliantly titled ‘I Hope You Two Fuck‘ place the focus on mid-tempo stomps. It’s a familiar approach and not one would displace any disbelievers in the style any time soon, but it’s not one that you could ever fake and the sheer amount of honesty on display here is infectious. Call Of The Void are callous, loud and, although it sounds like an antonym, sagacious, let’s hope they don’t change any time soon. – DL

Call of the Void

You’d be forgiven for not being aware of Call Of The Void, despite the fact that they’re signed to that most prestigious of labels Relapse Records, as they underwent a name change fairly soon after being signed due to ‘trademark issues’. So what was once Ironhorse is now Call Of The Void and while the name may have changed, the venomous bile being hurled forth is as deadly as always.

A stream of a new track ‘Napalm Lungs‘ is available through Pitchfork and, in one of those glorious little moments where the title of the song perfectly describes it, vocalist Steve Vanica is truly vicious. Obvious points of reference would be other crusty-core bands such as GazaEarly Graves and to a certain extent Nails, but at the same time the band manage to invoke some of the dark punk-y groove of Trap Them, that’s too often overlooked by bands of their ilk. Thankfully, the band hasn’t left us with just one track either, as you can listen to the album opener ‘Failure’  through their Bandcamp page.

The band’s debut Dragged Down A Dead End Path is set for release through the aforementioned Relapse on the 19th of March.

What a year. Here is a summary of my most pleasurable listening experiences. Quick shout outs to Gaza, Eldrimner, Acrania (Mexico), Disfiguring the Goddess, Gods of Eden, Trash Talk, Xibalba and TesseracT who just barely missed the cut. Sorry guys.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy my list. I didn’t mess around. Just meat and potatoes. Also, I’d love it if you left a comment validating my list or insulting me for terrible taste! Either way, happy doomsday!

If you’re into misanthropic, loud, and chaotic music and aren’t familiar with GAZA, you need to re-evaluate your position in life and start from scratch. Their latest record No Absolutes In Human Suffering is a monster of a record, which Dan gave high praise. Since its release, the band has seen critical acclaim and have been touring extensively. While on tour with Corrosion of Conformity earlier this year, the band shot a video for the track ‘Not With All The Hope In The World,’ and it’s a surprisingly high quality live shot for a band of their size and grizzly musical aesthetic. You can check out the video above (if you can’t see it, de-activate adblock for a hot minute) or over at Metal Injection.

No Absolutes In Human Suffering is out now on Black Market Activities.

It has been a monumental year in hardcore. Whether it’s the dark and harrowing approach of Gaza‘s No Absolutes in Human Suffering or the purely recreational 2 Hot 3 Handle by Heavy Blog favorites Cut Your Teeth, we have seen an incredibly diverse array of hardcore music. That isn’t even mentioning the emotionally charged and technically unforgiving Converge album or Xibalba‘s Hasta La Muerte that reinvents the term “heavy”. Like I had said, this year is monumental. Whether it be fun, emotional, technical, heavy, fresh, or innovative, hardcore has had a hell of a run this year. Rounding out these releases however is Trash Talk‘s latest offering 119. Blistering riffs that beg for stage dives and mosh pits, lyrics crafted for the most enthusiastic of sing alongs and iconography that would make Black Flag jealous, 119 has all the right ingredients to become a hardcore staple.

Grindcore has been unfortunately distant this year. A lot of the scene’s prominent players released new albums last year and other than Napalm Death and the upcoming album from Pig Destroyer, it’s a little thin on the ground. Thankfully though, these times of drought allow us to scramble in the dirt for the best the underground has to offer, with the most recent contender being Black Market Activities’ newest addition Hivesmasher. [Self Released]

As if Gaza, Xibalba and a forthcoming Converge record wasn’t enough dark hardcore/chaotic metalcore to supplement fans of all things raw and harrowing, Californian newcomers Harness have given us a bitesized chunk of material that stacks up against their influences. Quite a feat for such a young band and even more impressive is that all we have to judge them by is a four track EP. The EP is very reminiscent of Gaza’s latest effort No Absolutes For Human Suffering, but with more of an emphasis on punchy riffs and stop-go vocals. Essentially it’s Gaza if they played a more straight forward type of hardcore.

With a sludgy hardcore sound that could leave you with tetanus, GAZA‘s new record No Absolutes In Human Suffering is already a highlight to our year, and it’s not even out yet. They really are the epitome of ruthless misanthropic chaos; just check out the lyrics for their new song ‘The Truth Weighs Nothing,’ which is a seething attack on the Tebow mentality of expected God to help us solve our first world problems:

It sure was nice of Jesus to take time away from ignoring
Ethnic cleansing genocide and famine bloated children.
Or regrowing limbs for landmine victims
To help you score that touchdown
To help you find your keys
To help you land that promotion.
Is it that he can’t? Or is it that he won’t?
Wake up. Wake the fuck up.
The truth weighs nothing. Travel light. Be unburdened.

You don’t even have to imagine the sonic backdrop for that piece of “fuck the world” poetry. ‘The Truth Weighs Nothing’ can be streamed over at Decibel.

No Absolutes In Human Suffering is due out July 31st on Black Market Activities.

Heavy, intense, and with a highly technical and innately unconventional approach to their music, Salt Lake City’s GAZA perform an unpredictable mixture of metal, sludge, and grindcore. Their two previous full-length albums, He Is Never Coming Back, and I Don’t Care Where I Go When I Die are some of the heaviest albums to grace the heavy music spectrum in the past few years. With a penchant for a dark tone and feel, GAZA have once again successfully blended these three styles of music to give us another album that is not only a worthy follow up to 2009′s He Is Never Coming Back, but an album that far surpasses it.

No Absolutes in Human Suffering sees the band building upon their foundation, this time with more maturity and growth in their writing – but not to fret, as GAZA are in no short supply of noisy riffs, dissonant lows, and total crushing insanity. In a nutshell, this album slays.
