Wow, this year was an amazing year for metal. There were many great technical and progressive albums, which is what I consider to be my ‘main’ genre. A lot of my favorite bands came out with excellent albums, and there were a few surprising newcomers. Some of these I’ve reviewed myself and given a great score, so it won’t be a surprise. Some of these I didn’t have the time to review, which was a shame. Anyway, without further ado, here is my list of top 20 of 2011:

Honorable mentions:

Tre Watson – Gravestones

The reason I’m not giving this an actual rating is because Tre is a close friend of mine, so I can’t be unbiased about this. It’s a really great EP, and especially the last track is a masterpiece. Definitely listen to this.

Substructure – Monolith

These guys just came out of nowhere. They do a great blend of Born of Osiris and The Contortionist, a.k.a progressive spacecore. The reason it’s not in my actual list is because it’s quite short and a bit derivative. It’s still a good listen though.

Empirine – The Great Excursion

These guys perform a technical/progressive death blend of Opeth, Obscura and Cynic. They’re pretty incredible, and we’ve covered them a few times, so you should definitely check them out.

I know this is usually done in the form of a countdown list, but I honestly couldn’t really decide on the placement of these albums. And in the end, who am I to say which album is better than another? I’m just an 18 year old kid who listens to music for fun. I love all of this albums, and I appreciate every band on this list, as well as the multitude of other bands that didn’t actually make it on my list. This year was crazy and there could have easily been 30 or 40 other albums on here, but of course time and space are an issue when dealing with writings. Hell, my original drafted featured 20 different albums, and 6000+ words. So thank me for cutting it down. Anyways, without further ramblings on my part, here are some of my favorite albums from 2011.

Francesco Paoli Violates His Drumkit

As I’ve said before, Fleshgod Apocalypse‘s Agony is an amazing album, and that’s due in no small part to the insane skills of their drummer Francesco Paoli. In case you had any doubts about his playing – or are just up for watching him action – then then you’re in luck, as Sick Drummer have put up a few videos of him violating his drumkit:

More after the jump!

Aaaaaaaand yet another awesome tour for you North American types this autumn, this time with seminal screamo outfit Circle Takes The Square.

CTTS have been quiet for quite some time now, but they’re set to release their new album Decompositions: Volume I sometime this November, and I’m pretty stoked on that shit.

There’s no set support, but most of the dates will feature several of City of Ships, Touché Amoré and Pianos Become The Teeth. A couple also feature Thou, who are rather excellent.

There’s are also tentative details coming through about shows from The Chariot with VannaThe Crimson ArmadaFormer Thieves and Listener (whose frontman Dan Smith is the guy who does the intense spoken-word section on David De La Hoz). More details on that too when they are announced.

So fall’s looking pretty good for you guys as far as tours go. I’m not sure what the national coverage is like, but between the Between the Buried and Me/Animals As Leaders/TesseracT, Devin Townsend Project/The Ocean, Mastodon/Dillinger, Decapitated/Decrepit Birth/Fleshgod ApocalypseEnslaved/Alcest, Kvelertak/Skeletonwitch, The Black Dahlia Murder/All Shall PerishAna Kefr and The Bled runs, you’re bound to be able to see something cool (unless you live in the arse-end of nowhere, eh JR?). Just look at that list. Phew!

In this modern age of music, it seems that new sub-genres and tags are being created by the week to match a somewhat constant push towards innovation. Much to the chagrin of elitists and the conservative-minded that are, for some reason or another, afraid and enraged by evolving sounds. Every time a new buzzword of a genre is created, you have a flock of early adapters as well as an army of nay-sayers that scoff at passing trends. I saw it happen with nu-metal in the 90s, metalcore back in the early 2000′s, deathcore in its rise, and with the current state of the djent scene. We at Heavy Blog have always sort of held a magnifying glass at emerging trends and gave it its fair shake, and more often than not we like to roll with where the tides carry us (save for that whole crabcore and autotuned crap, of course).

So yes, I tend to pick up on fringe movements. From Sumeriancore to Post-Black Metal, I just enjoy hearing fresh ideas. Some call that trend-hopping, and I can sort of see where these people are getting at, but that’s not it at all. I sincerely dig hearing and partaking in what could very well be the next wave of metal. I just don’t enjoy sticking to just a handful of genres, and I certainly don’t intend on staying that way for the rest of my life. Music and music taste, ideally, is constantly evolving. I mean, I intend to be a listener of more extreme and underground genres when I’m, say, 50, but I’ll probably be following whatever sort of futuristic concoction happens to be going strong, and not clinging to djent and progressive metal for dear life and ramble about how “kids these days don’t understand the magic that was djent!” while shaking my fists in anger at kids who happen to be getting a little to close to my lawn.

These so-called ridiculous subgenres are seriously interesting to me, and over the past year or so, my attention has slowly been turning towards something I’m going to call “Post-Death Metal.” I can hear the anger emanating from within the elite hivemind right now at the mere mention of it. Most readers of HBIH are pretty open minded, and this isn’t so much about you regular readers, but there are some people out there that still deny that Post-Metal isn’t a genre. Seriously?! But back on point, Post-Death Metal is slowly emerging from the murky depths of metal, and in a year or so, it might just be commonplace. It’s so new and there’s so few bands doing it right now that the genre is sort of like an amorphous blob that hasn’t really been fully taken shape or even defined, from what I can gather. Today, I’m going to make an argument for its existence, and offer up a few qualifiers.

Good morning folks! This week’s a pretty short week in terms of new releases, so once again, I didn’t make a fancy header. I didn’t want to go image-less again though, so I’m going to take this time to remind you of how AWESOME the new Fleshgod Apocalypse album is, and the fact that it’s out this week!

Here’s some stuff:

Eyes Set To Kill – White Lotus (Forsee)
Fleshgod Apocalypse – Agony (Nuclear Blast)
Goreaphobia – Apocalyptic Necromancy (Dark Descent)
Trivium – In Waves (Roadrunner)

Come to think of it, the Trivium record is actually pretty good as well, but come on. Fleshgod wins.

Have a great week!

Ladies and gentlemen, if you’re going to attend the Carnival Is Forever Tour (featuring Decapitated, Decrepit Birth, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Rings of Saturn and The HAARP Machine), you’re going to have to be sure to bring a cap so your minds are retained when they’re blown and some clean shorts for when you inevitably shit yourself. The Metalsucks sponsored tour kicks off in September and features some of the coolest death metal bands going strong today, as well as newcomers The HAARP Machine, who have yet to even put out their highly anticipated debut album.

Fleshgod Apocalypse – Agony

Fleshgod Apocalypse

Agony

01. Temptation
02. The Hypocrisy
03. The Imposition
04. The Deceit
05. The Violation
06. The Egoism
07. The Betrayal
08. The Forsaking
09. The Oppression
10. Agony

[Nuclear Blast]

Since someone made me listen to “In Honour of Reason” from Fleshgod Apocalypse‘s debut album Oracles, I’ve been a fan of them. To be honest, I could never completely get into Oracles, because the songs didn’t have any dynamics and it was hard for me to distinguish them. Their following EP, Mafia, changed it all. The songs were still insanely fast, but each of them had a distinct sound, and the classical music angle was pushed even further with the composition. Now we have Agony, their sophomore album, which is a very reasonable progression from their past works. The classical elements are even more prominent, and there are even more clean vocals. Maybe this will upset the purists, but I think this is a huge step in the right direction.

Fleshgod Apocalypse are simply the most exciting up-and-coming modern death metal bands. They take what made Behemoth so huge, put their own twisted spin on it, and made it even better—in my opinion anyway. You should already be well acquainted with them though, but if not, you need to rectify this immediately and see them on the Summer Slaughter Tour, which starts this Friday in Los Angeles.

These Italian metal maestros release their second album Agony August 9th on Nuclear Blast. I haven’t gotten the promo for it yet, but there’s no doubt in my mind that it will be absolutely killer.
