From The Archive

The discovery of a new band is always exciting. Will it be something you’ve heard countless times? An experience that leaves a bad taste in your mouth? Or is it a treat from which you cannot stop consuming? I wanted to take a trip back in time to reminisce about bands/albums that not only introduced me to heavy music, but kept me coming back for more…

From The Archive: The Dillinger Escape Plan w/Mike Patton – Irony Is A Dead Scene

DEP-Patton - Irony Is A Dead Scene

The last time I spoke about these guys was back in November of 2010, where I discussed my love for their self-titled EP. Now I must return to this band of mischief makers simply because they are not only a gnarly band, but for a short period of time, combined their forces with one of the most legendary voices in music history. The sheer manic nature of both these parties coming together and making music is simply a treat for ones ears and mind. They only released an EP, but the 4 tracks contained within were enough to create an everlasting impact…

Dear sweet Lord, it’s been a while since I’ve done one of these! If you’re new to Heavy Blog or do not remember, this is where the highlights of our music submissions end up for you to feast your ears on! We hope you enjoy!

This time on Hits From The Inbox we have progressive metal band The Ciem Show. They’re sound is accurately self-described as “Progressive / Experimental Metal with Doomy tendencies… recommended for fans of Meshuggah, Devin Townsend, Arcturus, Ulver,King Crimson, and Faith No More.” Niiiiice. Their vocalist is certainly channeling some Strapping Young Lad-era Devin Townsend. Check out their album Lifelike Scenes below in its entirety.

If you dig the album (and you know good and well that you do!), you can download the album for free here.

The band are unfortunately having trouble finding a drummer. Here’s what bassist/guitarist Christopher had to say about their situation:

We are located in New Jersey and are currently suffering from a common, but deadly disease: Currently Seeking Drummer Syndrome (CSDS for short.) We have been suffering from CSDS for the better part of three years now, and if a cure is not found soon enough, we may never be able to perform live. Ever. Our previous drummer succumbed to an even more deadly disease, Apathia Sleeplatea Headupassia (in layman’s terms: laziness with a bit of the crazies), shortly after recording his parts for Lifelike Scenes..

Ouch. Are you a drummer in or around New Jersey? Hit them up on Facebook if you’re interested!

Angel Dust just has to be one of my favorite albums of all time. If you haven’t heard it, go and find it now because it’s a damn classic.

Ever since I included a contact page with an email for bands and labels to get in touch with us, I’ve been getting a few music submissions each week. Some good, some okay. Honestly, I’ve never had anything terrible come across my inbox–and I hope to God it never happens, as I hate being a jerk to people and I don’t want to ruin any sort of credibility I may have by glorifying something I think is terrible. I could never do a post belittling a small band that sent me a request; I leave that to larger, more professional bands signed to labels that have less of a chance of seeing this shit. At most I just ignore it if I don’t care enough or if I feel that it doesn’t fit in with what I’d call “heavy.”

But sadly this exclusion also caused submissions by good bands that don’t exactly fall in a genre of metal that I liked to be ignored. I also don’t have time to review (and sometimes listen) all of these albums in full. So, last night I said “Fuck it,” and went through the submissions and will post some here for you in a column. For the first incarnation of Hits From The Inbox, I present to you…

Geronimo!

Geronimo! is a three piece experimental/prog rock band from Chicago, Illinois. Their lineup includes drums, guitar, and keys, building up a sound that strays into post-rock atmospheres, experimental noise, punk rock melodies, classic rock and metal inspired riffs, and everywhere in between. Their unpredictable sound is akin to later Faith No More, in that they pull inspiration from all over the place. Not to say they sound like FNM, mind you, but that same attitude of experimenting with different rock genres and styles is present here.

When listening to their debut album Fuzzy Dreams, it was as if I was listening to Jethro Tull one minute and The Flaming Lips the next. I admire bands that avoid being pigeon-holed, and Geronimo certainly do a good job at it. And besides, look at that picture, you know those guys have to be fun as shit (oh dear God, that pun was not intended.)

Here’s a song from their album, “Battery Acid Moustache“. By the end, shit actually gets pretty frantic and heavy.

If you liked that, check the guys out on MySpace.

I love me Mike Patton something fierce. I hear recent effort Mondo Cane is stellar. Fantomas‘s The Director’s Cut is a work of genius, and I nearly cacked my pants when I heard Faith No More were reforming.

I don’t know about the possibility of a new album, but their string of live shows have been pretty well received. The PRP today posted fan-shot footage of last night’s concert in San Franciso. They were joined for the encore by original vocalist Chuck Mosely.

Callin’ me a liar? Direct your eyes downwards for evidence sir.

I quote our glorious leader: “Wholly unremarkable”. Bang on.

Next to Mikey P, it’s not surprising, but the man barely moves. Come on son, bit of effort?

I’m sure it was a big coup for them, and probably better in person, but I feel it was more a gimmick than anything.

“Hey, Reggie, remember that time Chuck Mosely, former lead singer of Faith No More performed with Faith No More except it was twenty-two years after he left Faith No More?”

“Sure do Cletus, that shit was BITCHIN’!”

“Naw man, he sucked harder than your mom.”

“FAITH NO MORE! WOO!”

Or something. I got nothing else to add.

You can now listen to the stream over on the Dillinger Escape Plan MySpace. If you have the time, you need to hear this album. It is fucking great. Definitely going to be on a few “Best of 2010″ lists, for sure.

The album feels more cohesive than Ire Works, but retains the duality of mathy chaos and Faith No More inspired melodic sensibilities. Chris has a review in the works, so keep an eye out for that. But for now, formulate your own opinion and listen the fuck out of Option Paralysis over on myspace.

Option Paralysis comes out next week, March 23rd on Season of Mist/Party Smasher Inc.

New Dillinger Escape Plan song “Chinese Whispers” premiered on Full Metal Jackie last night. And just like every other internet radio premier or stream, someone rips it and uploads it to YouTube. Fuck yeah, Faith No More influenced Dillinger is always awesome!

Catch “Chinese Whispers” in higher quality on Tuesday when Metalsucks hosts the stream. We’re about two weeks away from this bombshell dropping on us all; March 23, via Party Smasher Inc and Season of Mist.

During a performance of “Just A Man” (how fitting) at Faith No More‘s appearance at the Soundwave Festival, Mike Patton jumped down off stage and commandeered a camera. After turning it on the audience, he turned it on himself.

Wowie. Mike’s been known to do crazy shit on stage, so I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.

After the jump, the picture. It’s obviously NSFW, so beware.

I say this because Dillinger Escape Plan Fansite Spreading Like Wings reports that over the weekend, teasers of every track from DEP’s upcoming album Option Paralysis have hit the net (which you can listen to below), along with a track by track review at Rocksound.

These teasers have got me pumped up for OP even more than I already was. It features everything I’d want in a Dillinger album: Chaos, jazzy shred, and Faith No More influenced rocking melodicism. If they can make an album half as good as 2007′s Ire Works, then I’m sold. However, judging on what I’ve heard so far, it’s going to be up on that level, if not greater.

Option Paralysis is due out March 22nd, and I can’t fucking wait.

FAITH NO MORE WERE FUCKING AMAZING

Well, Mike’s suit was sexy as hell. If I’d ever go gay, it would be for this man:
