What can I possibly say about Attack Attack! that hasn’t already been said? Only a few short years ago they were the butt of every joke as the poster boys for all that is wrong with what metalcore has become. Generic breakdown-laden metalcore with autotuned vocals, misguided electronic parts, and choreographed stage moves was just too ridiculous, and I’m sure the band hasn’t heard the end of it since their ‘breakout hit’ ‘Stick Stickly.’ A lot can change a band over the course of two albums, and with lineup changes plaguing them, Attack Attack! have proved themselves to be quite resilient. I mean, regardless what you think about the band, it takes strength to keep pursuing your career after an embarrassing viral video and losing about half your band. Through it all, the band has managed to mature, making an effort to be taken seriously as musicians. Their latest album This Means War sees the band going from hilariously awful to just unoffensive.

Structures took many people by storm with their debut release All Of The Above. The EP was innovative and fresh – though rather chuggy – and it represented both the youth and talent of a band in a concise package that displayed what the band was all about. In fact, the record was good enough to catch the eye of a grand ol’ record company called Sumerian. It seemed as if they were signed without any hesitation, and sometimes that is one of the best signs that a band is good – but it seems that the signing has brought out the worst in the band.

Volumes sure did see a rapid jump to success. Before even releasing their debut album, they toured alongside the biggest bands in the entire scene and gaining a sizable fanbase. I could never really see it at the time of their EP, though. It seemed that almost everyone was raving about The Concept of Dreaming (this site’s official review included), and I just couldn’t get what all the fuss was about. Now the LA-based sextet released their highly anticipated full-length album Via to a reasonable and unignorable amount of fanfare, I felt obligated to give it another spin. I think I’m starting to see it.

Did you know that this week sees the first new Primus album in over a decade?! There’s some other stuff too, so soak it in:

Anthrax – Worship Music (Megaforce)
ÆGES – Roaches (Hawthorne Street)
Dream Theater – A Dramatic Turn of Events (Roadrunner)
Haste The Day – Haste The Day Vs. Haste The Day (DVD/CD) (Solid State)
Mogwai – Earth Division (Sub Pop)
Pathology – Awaken To The Suffering (Victory)
Primus – Green Naugahyde (Prawn Songs/ATO Records)
Staind – Staind (Atlantic)
The Devil Wears Prada – Dead Throne (Ferret Music)
Vader – Welcome To The Morbid Reich (Nuclear Blast)
We Came As Romans – Understanding What We’ve Grown To Be (Equal Vision)
Wolves In The Throne Room – Celestial Lineage (Southern Lord)
Wolves Like Us – Late Love (Prosthetic)

I sometimes wonder how Pathology feels being one of the only respectable bands still signed to Victory. I guess it’s sort of like that awkward situation where you’re talking with dudes who notice your obscure t-shirt and think they identify with you and insist on talking about how great Asking Alexandria are while you smile and nod.

That reminds me, I once had a guy ask me if I enjoyed Emmure after he found out I write about heavier music. The dude has a neck tattoo now. True story.

Have a good week!

I’m sure you’ve heard of Chelsea Grin, and by now you either love them or you hate them.  I’m quite positive that our opinion on the matter has been well-voiced on HBIH — we aren’t fans at all.  However, I was willing to try it out.  Let it be known that I did not enter into this record with high hopes.  I was, however, optimistic.  This is their second album, and third release overall.  Perhaps an evolution was made in a short time?

As in, I wonder how long it will be before Victory learns that the vast majority of the bands they sign are crap.  Gone are the golden days of Snapcase, Integrity, and Between the Buried and Me. Today is the day of atrocious bands like Design the Skyline, Emmure, Dr. Acula, and the band this post is about: The Bunny The Bear.

This band is contemptible. I’ve always never liked gimmicks, and the fact that their gimmick is in their name and masks irritates me in places nobody should be irritated. Also, the singer has the worst vibrato ever, their harsh vocalist has very poor yells, and the music is trashy, overused techno-crab rock.  They basically are a pop band with harsh vocals.  You know a band is immature when one of their songs is titled “It’s a Long Way From the Esophagus to the Ovaries”.  Lovely. The video below proves all the aforementioned.

Just added to Basick’s exciting summer release lineup is the new album by Peterborough progressive metallers Visions, entitled Home.

Visions just recently supported Manure Emmure, along with iwrestledabearonce (pre-black metal era), War From A Harlot’s Mouth and Winds of Plague, and whilst I wouldn’t have stayed beyond about nine o’clock at one of those shows, it’s good for interesting bands such as these guys to get on tours like this and school all the bros in the audience. To their credit, they’ve also shared a stage with the likes of The Arusha Accord and Sylosis, which probably gives a better idea of their quality.

Even more exciting, the album was produced by John Browne and Neema Askari of Monuments, and the stunning artwork is by John Barmby, who also did the work for Architects‘ latest (which definitely wasn’t the most terrible thing about that album) as well as Devil Sold His Soul‘s Blessed & Cursed, which is awesome.

Track 7, “Home” has been made available for streaming on Basick’s Soundcloud, or you can just stream it here, ennit?

VISIONS – Oceans by basickrecords

Catch the rest of the tracklisting after the jump, as well as the release date (I’ll give you a clue: it’s some time between July 17th and 19th)!

MAJOR RAGING AT BATTLE OF THE BANDS

Nerd reference a-hoy!

So as you may know it’s actually Metal March, in which record companies and others join up to promote themselves through free samplers, etc. Seems fairly innocuous and inoffensive, right? WRONG. Seems ThrashMag.com is running a knock-out battle of the bands with 64 artists from Metal Blade, Sumerian Records, Nuclear Blast and Victory Records(!?). Little do they know that they are casually mining a fairly large ore of rage buried deep within me. Let me just list a few of the travesties that are occuring:

  • I don’t want to live in a world where As I Lay Dying are beating Behemoth
  • I don’t want to live in a world where Job For A Cowboy are beating The Ocean
  • I don’t want to live in a world where Asking Alexandria are beating Fellsilent
  • I don’t want to live in a world where Shai Halud are beating Gwar
  • I also don’t want to live in a world where A Day To Remember, Dr. Acula, Emmure and Aiden could even be considered kings of Metal March.

Yes, I know it’s a popularity contest but at least go over there and do the right thing, you have until the 18th before the first round ends, in return I’ll keep quiet about the whole Goatwhore and Between The Buried And Me thing.

This totally makes up for the headscratcher I took a look at yesterday. Head of Sumerian Records Ash Avildsen is opening what might just be the coolest record stores ever, SoundCheck Hollywood, on Sunset Blvd. Opening a record store is some risky business these days in a world of digital dominance and music piracy, but I think Ash and his crew can pull this one off. I can admire his ambition; instead of hamfisted attempts to incite an armchair revolution, he’s actually doing something about piracy and the decline of the physical format. Soundcheck Hollywood is right in the middle of the action, situated across the street from the legendary Whiskey A Go-Go. This record store will focus on a more underground rock and metal theme and will feature not only CDs and DVDs, but also limited edition vinyl and exclusive tee-shirts.

On top of that, they’re working to close the gap between the artist and fans by hosting meet and greets that break away from the “stand in line and wait your turn” autograph table sessions in a special “Backstage” area of the store. They plan on making the opening day a big one; The official SoundCheck Hollywood grand opening party will take place on March 23rd and will feature signings from Asking Alexandria, Emmure, Animals As Leaders, The Faceless, Suicide Silence, Winds of Plague and many others.

SoundCheck Hollywood will also be selling new releases Monday nights at 9 PM rather than waiting for the next day. The logic makes sense, considering albums get sold on iTunes at midnight on the east coast. If I lived near this place, you can bet I’d start buying more albums. This is pretty ballsy, and I hope it works out.

I’m going to make this quick, cause I can’t take any more of this.  Dr. Acula is a 7-piece band (which is completely unnecessary, because the music can easily be performed with 4.) that have been around since ’05.   Their first 3 releases had some form of a quirkiness to them.  They were god-awful releases, don’t get me wrong, but Dr. Acula knew that they were trash, and they just didn’t give a fuck.  They actually developed a decent fan base.  And I admit, I thought The Social Event of the Century wasn’t the worst release I had ever heard.  But then the bastards at Victory Records got a hold of them, and then it seems like everything about Dr. Acula changed.  Their logo, their appearance, and their sound.  And this is the worst thing that could have possibly happened, as this is the worst album I’ve heard in quite some time.
