God love you, you guys annoy me, but hopefully this will shut you up for five minutes at least.

The tail end of 09, saw four gentleman who did time in Burnt by the Sun, The Dillinger Escape Plan & The Postman Syndrome, that currently play in Municipal Waste and East of the Wall as well, start charting out sea changes. Argonauts have set their own course in heavy music, unconcerned with limitation or agenda. Hold Fast.

The name certainly interests me; I’m a huge ancient Greek mythology nerd, so the whole Jason angle is a big plus for me, but the man fronting this promising outfit will probably prove to be the bigger draw for most people: none other than Mr. Dimitri Minakakis, former vocalist of the Dillinger Escape Plan. DEP enthusiasts will know that Minakakis, who was the band’s vocalist up to and including 1999′s genre-bending album Calculating Infinity, left the band to focus on his graphic design business amongst other things, and indeed, he supplied the artwork for last year’s fantastic Option Paralysis.

Joining him are drummer Dave Witte of Municipal Waste, his ex-bandmate in Burnt By The Sun John Adubato on guitars, and rounded off by Brett Bamberger of East of the Wall on bass.

Now, it’s no secret that Calculating Infinity-era purists annoy the bajeezus out of me, and I’m sure Argonauts won’t produce anything remotely like it, but I’m fine with that, and I’m looking forward to hearing Dimitri’s work once more. The band have listed themselves as “Metal / Noise / Darkwave” on Facebook, which means it’ll probably be a bit more post-metally, but don’t hold me to that. No music as of yet, but we’ll keep you posted!

[Metal Blade]

The genre often referred to as mathcore reached its peak a few years ago and has since faded out in favor of the djent and progressive x-core scenes, it seems. Heavy-hitting pioneers such as The Dillinger Escape Plan live on in success while the copycats and fellow noisemakers either died out around them or faded into obscurity. I don’t necessarily have a problem with that either; there’s a fine line between forward thinking experimentation and needless wank, and many bands failed to even find where that line was. In the last few years, the only prominent micro-genre release that I can think of that gained any sort of notoriety was Option Paralysis—but with new Metal Blade signing Intensus, a fine return of the mathcore aesthetic is upon us.

I have never heard of this Intensus before, but apparently it’s a one man free form improvisational metal project from Knife The Glitter‘s Eli Litwin that sounds like the bastard child of The Dillinger Escape Plan and Anaal Nathrakh. Normally I skip over many new signings if I have never seen the name before (for shame!), but what caught my eye is the guest list featuring some names I’ve seen before, including BTBAM‘s Tommy Rogers, who goes absolutely batshit insane in this song “I’m A Wisdom.”

Holy shit, I am losing my ever loving mind. Has Tommy ever been this diverse of a screamer on a single track? It’s definitely been years since he’s hit lows and highs this extreme. Fuck.

Here’s the guest list for the album:

Tommy Rogers (Between the Buried and Me)
Robert Meadows (A Life Once Lost)
Jesse Korman (The Number Twelve Looks Like You)
Chris Alfano (East of the Wall / Postman Syndrome)
Jerry Jones (Trophy Scars)
Travis Weinand (Burden / Tetsuo)
Evan Moore (Gypsy Wig / Birth Screams)
Ruston Grosse

Someone send a cleaning crew to my house because my mind’s been blown—and it’s messy. No release date yet, but you can listen to four songs from the record over at the Intensus Facebook.

According to an announcement on their official website, East Of The Wall will be entering the studio on May 8th to record their next full-length, The Apologist. The band will be working with Andrew Schneider (Cave In, Rosetta, Pelican), and the album is currently slated for a fall release. Also, here’s the tentative track listing:

“False Build”
“Naif”
“Linear Failure”
“My Favorite Society Guy”
“Precious Memories”
“The Apologist”
“Running Tab of Sweetness”
“Horseback Riding In A Bicycle World”
“A Functional Tumor”
“Nurser of Small Hurts”
“Whiskey Sipper”
“Underachiever”

This is very exciting news for various reasons. For one, it’s only been 8 months since they released Ressentiment, which was superb, so the fact that we have another album on the way so soon is awesome. Also, we can expect a different sound from this album because the current East Of The Wall was formed by two different bands (Biclops and the old East Of The Wall) coming together, and most of the material on Ressentiment was written by Biclops. This explains why they’re able to come out with a new album so soon, and it’ll be very interesting to hear what The Apologist sounds like with them all working together on it. Get excited!

Dammit, this album took me a while to write a review for, and I had it before it came out. It always took me a while to get into East of the Wall, as their brand of proggy post-hardcore-meets-post-metal sound was a bit of work to dissect; but throw vocals into an hour long album full of this music, then you have somewhat of a difficult listen. I knew from the get go that East of the Wall’s Ressentiment was good, but how good is it? That took some work.

News has been slow recently. So slow, that the guys at Metalsucks decided to spice up the day by being nice to everyone on their posts today. So far, they’ve come across as passive-aggressive in moments where they’d normally pass the Haterade like the so many joints that make their way around The Mansion, which is an improvement, I guess? It should be an interesting day for them, especially if Joey Belladonna gets featured.

However, when it comes to the new East Of The Wall song they’re streaming today, it’s all genuine excitement. The progressive post-hardcore rockers’ new song “The Ladder” is pretty rad. I keep forgetting that the band is no longer an instrumental project, which is great if you ask me. I have a hard time staying interested in instrumental music. I don’t know what it is or why, but that’s just how it is with me.

East of the Wall are releasing their album Ressentiment on July 20th. This may be a surprise hit for me. We’ll see how all that plays out though, but if what we’ve heard so far, that might be the case.

As far as I could remember, East Of The Wall were an progressive instrumental metal band. Now all of a sudden they release two new songs and there’s a guy singer. To be sure that I wasn’t crazy, I listened to their older music and there’s no vocals. There’s no vocalist listed on their MySpace either. I’m just going to assume it’s one of the members doing the vocal work until I’m told otherwise.

Enough about that. Like I said, East of the Wall have uploaded two new songs, “Salieri” and “Fleshmaker” on their MySpace page, and they are fucking amazing. Both songs come straight from their upcoming album Ressentiment (oh lawd, a portmanteau), which is due out sometime in July on Translation Loss records.

Here’s the tracklist for the album, which I am suddenly now excited for:

01. “The Ladder”
02. “Salieri”
03. “Fool’s Errand”
04. “Wisp Of Tow”
05 .“Ocean Of Water”
06. “It’s Always Worth While Speaking To A Clever Man”
07. “Fleshmaker”
08. “Maybe I’m Malaised”
09. “A Long Defeat”
10. “Gordian Corridor”
11. “Handshake In Your Mouth”
12. “Don’t Stop Bereaving”
13. “Beasteater”
