Many a metal fan has become desensitized towards technical death metal. When a genre is defined by being overly technical and complicated, it’s easy to push the envelope when it is a purely metric measure. However, in the end, the bands that shine are those who focus on songwriting and coherence, which is why Obscura are the best act in the genre for me. Fallujah, who used to be blackened deathcore, have decided to try their hand at TDM in The Harvest Wombs, and they seem to have gotten the memo, as their songs are songs first, technical exercises second. They also have brought their blackened flair into the genre, which is definitely a welcome sound that makes them even more unique. What’s so special about this album? Let’s take a look.

Aaaaaaaand yet another awesome tour for you North American types this autumn, this time with seminal screamo outfit Circle Takes The Square.

CTTS have been quiet for quite some time now, but they’re set to release their new album Decompositions: Volume I sometime this November, and I’m pretty stoked on that shit.

There’s no set support, but most of the dates will feature several of City of Ships, Touché Amoré and Pianos Become The Teeth. A couple also feature Thou, who are rather excellent.

Here’s what we have at the moment:

More details to come on those last few shows, and we’ll try and get those to you when they come our way.

There’s are also tentative details coming through about shows from The Chariot with VannaThe Crimson ArmadaFormer Thieves and Listener (whose frontman Dan Smith is the guy who does the intense spoken-word section on David De La Hoz). More details on that too when they are announced.

So fall’s looking pretty good for you guys as far as tours go. I’m not sure what the national coverage is like, but between the Between the Buried and Me/Animals As Leaders/TesseracT, Devin Townsend Project/The Ocean, Mastodon/Dillinger, Decapitated/Decrepit Birth/Fleshgod ApocalypseEnslaved/Alcest, Kvelertak/Skeletonwitch, The Black Dahlia Murder/All Shall PerishAna Kefr and The Bled runs, you’re bound to be able to see something cool (unless you live in the arse-end of nowhere, eh JR?). Just look at that list. Phew!

Ladies and gentlemen, if you’re going to attend the Carnival Is Forever Tour (featuring Decapitated, Decrepit Birth, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Rings of Saturn and The HAARP Machine), you’re going to have to be sure to bring a cap so your minds are retained when they’re blown and some clean shorts for when you inevitably shit yourself. The Metalsucks sponsored tour kicks off in September and features some of the coolest death metal bands going strong today, as well as newcomers The HAARP Machine, who have yet to even put out their highly anticipated debut album.

I’m about to admit something that most of you already know, but I still hold much shame for: I don’t listen to entirely enough death metal. I’m merely a casual listener that latches on to bands that catch my ear, such as The Faceless and Meshuggah, but I’m mostly drawn to the progcore (I guess is what you could call it), djent, and post-metal that we regularly feature. Let it be known that I’m trying though, and at the glowing recommendation of Islander over at No Clean Singing, I sought out Beyond Creation‘s debut album, The Aura.

Because face it, you will never be as good as them! Here’s a recently released ‘jam session’ video of them keeping Prog-Metal March brutal:

I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of watching tech death bands play their stuff, gives you more of an appreciation of how complex the music actually is and it’s pretty easy to get completely desensitized to that with the level of musicianship around today. So Polarity was clearly a great album; everybody and their Mum had it on their end of year list, but where was the love for Diminishing Between Worlds!? It wasn’t as melodic but the musicianship was spectacular, as you just saw.

Also, the world needs more Fleshlight endorsements.

Obscura‘s new song “Septuagint”, which will be featured on their upcoming third album Omnivium, has been posted this week and is available for streaming above. The 7-minute track is everything we’ve come to expect from the excellent German technical death metal group and more. It’s fast, it’s tight, it’s technical, and best of all it’s not monotonous. Monotony is probably my biggest complaint with a lot of tech death, but Obscura have thankfully avoided that trap with this song. Between the various clean sections, the blazing guitar solos, and everything else that you could hope to find here the music flows from start to finish without ever feeling stale. Awesome. Be sure to check this out if you’ve never heard these guys before, especially if you enjoy bands like Necrophagist (Obscura actually features a couple of ex-Necrophagist members), Decrepit Birth, or The Faceless.

Omnivium comes out on March 29th in the states, and on April 4th everywhere else, via Relapse Records.

Oh, Deadlock, how do I describe the relationship we have? You continually give me reasons to dislike you, but then you give me reasons to like you. When will the fence riding stop? From Earth.Revolt to Manifesto, German modern melo-death 6 pack (all right that was lame) have given me chills, but gags as well. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Bizarro World, the band’s 5th release in a rollercoaster career, fails to change my mind.

At first glimpse, the album seemingly has hope. Looking at the title of the album and the song names should give you a good indication that this album does not feature the animal rights slacktivism they have come to be known for in the lyrical side of things. That right there drew a huge smile across my face. While I can’t endorse the new lyrical direction (that is, relating the DC comics universe) as much as I can some pseudo-intellectual babble about mysticism (see Decrepit Birth), it’s definitely a step up. With a change in lyrical content, I had come to the assumption that this album might not be plagued by the inconsistencies of the past. Kind of like an intervention or a cleansing. But here we are again, going up and down. I swear I’ve been here before.

So I was able to make it out to the Decibel Defiance Tour last week, and I can safely say that it was one of the best shows I’ve been to in a long time. Featuring Fleshgod Apocalypse, Decrepit Birth, Through The Eyes Of The Dead, The Faceless, and Suffocation the package consisted mostly of amazing tech-death bands and they all played very solid sets. The show was also a breath of fresh air in the aspect that there wasn’t a single hardcore dancer there in the pit; only moshing. I can’t remember the last time that’s happened. However pleasant the lack of hardcore dancing might have been though, the highlight of the show for me was getting to hang out with and interview Decrepit Birth‘s Bill Robinson before the show. Bill is an awesome guy and has a lot of interesting stuff to say so give it a watch:

I didn’t realize how dark the camera would make it look so that aspect of the interview is a disappointment, sorry guys! Overall it was a really good interview though, so check it out!

[Selfmade God | 12/20/10]

As pretentious as it sounds, I rarely get sent music that I haven’t heard before. At the very least, a band’s name is familiar, but this was not the case upon receiving an email from Selfmade God Records promoting Calm Hatchery, a technical death metal outfit from the underrated Poland, and their new album. I generally tend to avoid the unknown death metal because there’s always something wrong with it (generic, basement-quality production and so on), but my itching for some new tech death after digesting Decrepit Birth‘s latest effort ad infinitum took over. They say curiosity killed the cat, but I can say with utmost certainty that this is not always true because Sacrilege of Humanity is a great release.

… so what’s on everyone’s favorites for this year so far? We’re almost at November I figured I could do with some new music that could modify my list (and maybe yours too). I’m most definitely missing a few gems. Throw your top 5 in the comments (or more if you want) and let’s get some recommendations going!

In no order, mine is shaping up to be:

The Tony Danza Tapdance ExtravaganzaDanza III: A Series of Unfortunate Events

Decrepit BirthPolarity

Solution .45For Aeon’s Past

The AbsenceEnemy Unbound

The 25th Hour - Monsters

Special mention to Piotrek GruszkaCosmogenesis. If that album gets stuck any more in my head I can’t imagine it not making my final list.

Let’s see what you guys got!
