It’s November the 11th, 2011. It’s around 5pm and I’m at Damnation Festival, killing time inbetween bands. I’m drunk. Naturally.

And then the in-house music shuts off and the lights go down. The smoke machines begin to work overtime, pushing out gallon upon gallon of dry ice into the already cloudy room. Where there was only murmurs , an intro-tape suddenly lurches into life with a dry vinyl hiss and mechanical screeching jostling for space. I’ve never before seen such a large group of people snap into such a relentless concentration but all eyes are fixed expectantly on the cloudy haze that was once a stage.

At this point the only thing separating this from some kind of psychological torture scenario is the few sources of light emanating from the candles on stage. The buzzing and hissing becomes more violent. A metronomic low pulse pushes to the forefront, testing the ear drums of everyone present. Minutes go by whilst the endless aural abuse continues before suddenly 4 silhouettes make their way onto the stage and face away from the crowd.

It pleases me to serve you

We reported a couple of weeks ago that Poland’s Decapitated had to cancel their appearances at Aalborg Metal Festival and UK’s Damnation Festival due to a plane crash they were involved in upon returning from America. I’m sure many were disappointed to miss them, but fear not; they will be returning to the UK next year with Aborted and Cyanide Serenity for a modest run of dates. They’ll be hitting all the big stops, with a couple yet to be announced. Check it:

02/24 Birmingham, UK – HMV Institute
02/25 TBA, UK – TBA
02/26 London, UK – Dingwalls
02/27 Manchester, UK – Moho
02/28 Glasgow, UK – G2
02/29 Reading, UK – Sub 89
03/01 Nottingham, UK – Rescue Rooms
03/02 Bristol, UK – Fleece
03/03 TBA, UK – TBA

Damien reviewed the band’s most recent offering Carnival Is Forever and gave it full marks, so I see no good reason not to hop on this particular party bus if it comes your way!

I didn’t really pay all that much attention earlier this week when I saw news of a plane crash in Warsaw, Poland. Call me cold if you will, but I saw that no-one was injured and didn’t really delve much further than that. I know bad news never relents, but I’ve been steering clear of non-essential news as much as possible lately. Things bum you out enough as it is without hearing about supposedly upstanding people beating their kids, or even worse, absolute monsters murdering their children for talking to an ‘infidel’. I will never understand people.

As it happens though, there was a point of interest to come out of this crash, insofar that Polish death metal outfit Decapitated, who were returning from tour in America, were on the plane.

Now, as I said, no-one was hurt, but the extremely unfortunate consequence is that the band have had to cancel their slot at this Saturday’s Damnation Festival in Leeds. A statement said:

“We are extremely sorry to inform our fans, that due to unforeseen circumstances that are out of our control, we will unfortunately have to cancel our shows in Aalborg (Aalborg Metal Festival) and Leeds (Damnation Festival)”

A huge blow for anyone hoping to catch them – and indeed anyone who would have anyway – but given the band’s history with accidents, we can breathe a sigh of relief that they are unscathed – many will recall their automotive accident in 2007 that killed drummer Witold “Vitek” Kiełtyka, and the band only recently returned with the excellend Carnival Is Forever. No specific reason has been given for the cancellations, but I can only imagine what kind of memories it brought back.

However the show – the seventh edition of Damnation – must go on, and with Ulver extending their set to 90 minutes, you’ll still be well placed for a day of awesome metal if you’re in the area. There are some absolute gems still to be seen, including Shining, God Is An Astronaut, Turisas, Humanfly and the headliner Devin Townsend amongst others.

Download 2011 Update

Is this an update? Have I even mentioned it before? never mind, who cares.

So below is the latest update to the lineup for the UK’s biggest metal festival and, well…it kinda blows.

Of course, with a festival of this size it won’t be a total dud; I’m not into ‘classic’ metal, but I’m sure Def Leppard would be fun, as would the reunited System of a Down, if only for the nostalgia. Pendulum will be good, and the biggest non-metal act on the bill, Frank Turner, will slay. We’ve even got little old Ghost down there somewhere, but other than that? Poor.

I’m sure many of you will disagree, but for me it’s a big ole’ pile of do not want. You’re better of checking out Bloodstock (who are rocking Devin Townsend this year), Damnation, or Sonisphere (The Big Four, Mastodon, Gojira and Protest the Hero amongst others), or heading abroad to Groezrock (Every Time I Die, Cancer Bats).
