What a year. Here is a summary of my most pleasurable listening experiences. Quick shout outs to Gaza, Eldrimner, Acrania (Mexico), Disfiguring the Goddess, Gods of Eden, Trash Talk, Xibalba and TesseracT who just barely missed the cut. Sorry guys.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy my list. I didn’t mess around. Just meat and potatoes. Also, I’d love it if you left a comment validating my list or insulting me for terrible taste! Either way, happy doomsday!

Following the coattails of Lil’ B, an inexplicable rap sensation who puts out an overly excessive amount of satire rap for a bafflingly loyal fanbase, Cut Your Teeth have provided us with their latest offering 2 Hot 3 Handle. Perfecting the art of all-caps statuses, on the fly releases, and announcements akin in typical based god fashion, 2 Hot 3 Handle contains some of the most searing and intense good-time party thrash around, with even more of those swaggering bluesy solos that have defined the band over the last few releases. As normal, you can download the entire thing for free over at their Bandcamp page, along with their entire discography, so what are you waiting for? These guys are one of those glorious hidden gems that are only made possible by the Bandcamp interface, a true testament to power of the internet.

What I find particularly interesting is that groups like BadBadNotGood and Cut Your Teeth are heralded as greats among their respective genres. There is something to be said for this phenomenon that is being “Based.” Surely Cut Your Teeth have made Based God proud with their uniqueness and passion for having a good time. In all seriousness though, 2 Hot 3 Handle is a extremely fun release and more than worth your time.

After a couple of slow days, it would seem the pace is starting to pick up again. And what better way to begin than with a new track from everybody’s favourite ‘come-at-me-bro’-core band, Cut Your Teeth — FEED‘ sounds damn heavy and almost veers into the realm of powerviolence in places, making it probably the most punk-infused track we’ve heard from the band yet. Naturally, there’s another killer solo, as we’ve come to expect, but that doesn’t water down the potency at all.

Whilst there’s not been any murmurs of a new full length any time soon, I can only hope that this trickle of new material is pointing towards a new release some time this year. But as always, you can go straight to their bandcamp page and download the new track, alongside all their previous material!

Cut Your Teeth Make It Loud

For some reason, Cut Your Teeth just don’t get the attention they deserve. Their new track “If It’s Loud” was released just before the new year and is a 2 minute ode to everything that’s fun about hardcore and thrash, containing the sort of lyrics Manowar would write if they picked up a six pack and dropped the dragons and elves. Naturally, there’s crusty riffs, shout-a-longs and even the Cut Your Teeth mainstay of a guitar solo that would do Eddie Van Halen proud — even now I’m overthinking it, it’s just a great track.

Best of all? It’s free much like the entire Cut Your Teeth discography, including the brilliant CYTII which was on my shortlist for the best albums of 2011 but unfortunately lost out in ruthless culling down to only 20 albums. Head over here to their Bandcamp page for the free downloads. Also, after the jump is a bonus video of Cut Your Teeth improving the Limp Bizkit hits collection tenfold by dressing in onesies and squealing incomprehensibly over the top of them.

The word ‘underrated’ is probably used way too much these days, it seems that anything less than universal acclaim is undermining a bands talent to their fans. It’s probably fair to say that the skill in new bands has increased, every band is more technical/better at songwriting/straight up weirder than it’s predecessors so it’s probably natural that some guys just miss the hype train in lieu of yet another band who will save deathcore/rejuvenate djent/copy Metallica. While music is incredibly subjective in terms of taste, how often have you stumbled upon a band and just gone ‘Wow, who are these guys and why are they so damn awesome?’ Last.fm is hardly the be all and end all of popularity, but I’d say it’s a pretty good indicator, so here are five bands that are the definition of ‘underrated’:

#1: Lizard Skynard

With a mind blowing 41 listeners(!?) on Last.fm, Lizard Skynard are my favourite secret. Taking influences from all corners of heavy music including grind, hardcore and dissonant rock, they provide some of the most interesting music I’ve heard in the last few years. However, the vocals and lyrics are where the real genius lies. Provided by Erik Sprague, who you may of heard of as the Lizardman, they are mostly a collection of spoken word short stories from some very eclectic characters. Take for instance ‘Space Eels‘, which tells the tale of an insane homeless man who tries to stop an alien invasion by getting passers by to smile, or my personal favourite ‘Normal‘, a story of a police officer so hellbent on keeping the world normal that he begins to break down mentally – it’s made far more poignant when you realise that ‘Normal‘ is being told by a man who literally has the word ‘FREAK’ emblazoned on his chest.  If that at all interests you then head over their homepage where you can stream and buy copies of their 2010 self-titled debut album.

Admittedly, thrash isn’t my forte. I could never get into the genre save for a few choice bands here and there; not to say the genre is bad or anything like that, of course. It’s just not appealing to me for the most part. I’m sure a number of Heavy Blog readers can identify, considering our average subject material and its drawing. Taking into consideration my distaste for the genre, I suppose it means something when I say that NYC cross-over thrash band Cut Your Teeth are damn good.

Yes, I’m aware that the headline is lame and obvious, but that doesn’t make Cut Your Teeth not awesome. The band have been preparing a series of free downloadable racks that will soon be available on fine blogging institutions like Gunshy Assassin, The Number of the Blog and, of course, Heavy Blog. But that isn’t until next month. Keep an eye out for it!

For now, though, the band released a 5-track EP on Bandcamp and just released one of the raddest videos I’ve seen in a while for their song “Stallion.” It’s performance footage, but it’s done intensely. I’m a sucker for guitar vision!

Be sure to check out Cut Your Teeth on their official website and bandcamp. Like I said earlier, we’ll be hosting two new songs from these rockers in February, so stick around!
